I finally watched #Barbarian yesterday.
Good movie.
And I particularly appreciate that the first character to die was a white man who didn't take the concerns of a Black woman seriously.
That and the serious fake-out of Bill Skarsgård having second billing in a horror movie only for his character to become that selfsame first victim.
Side note: With my #prosopagnosia, I was still trying to convince myself that the actor was in fact Bill S when we saw the character's driver's license showing 5'10" and so I decided it couldn't be him.

I'm certain that #FaceBlindness is a big part of why I like dressing as creatures whether it's being #Xenomorph or wearing a silly Halloween mask.
In ordinary life, I look in at my face in a mirror and see a slab of flesh which looks like carefully arranged teratoma, with slight coincidental symmetry.
But with a mask on (even a silly grinning dogman), I feel aesthetic. And I love it.

Thoughts when a human makes eye contact with me in public:
Is this someone I know?
Is it just random eye contact?
Is it one of my former students?
Is it a friend? An acquaintance? Someone from the Drag King collective? Someone I met at a party?
Is it my doctor?
Am I supposed to greet them?
What is a polite way to say "Hey, you seem to recognize me but how do we know each other already"?
Oh, they're gone.

@schrottkatze I've been seeing a lot recognition for aphantasia lately, which is cool, and how I got introduced to it.
I'm honestly not sure whether it applies to me or not, though, since the tests I've seen are very focused on imagining people's faces, which #prosopagnosia prevents me from being able to do...but maybe its a related phenomenon. -
The recognition of faces is processed by the right fusiform gyrus and caricatures by the left fusiform gyrus.
Sounds like I'm making it up but I'm not, although the evidence is rather flimsy (fMRI data). Also this was from a paper about a decade ago, which was the last time I searched for such stuff.
Might be time for me to fire up PubMed... -

i didn't reformat the laptop with the sever install because i still have a lot of GUI software stuff there that i have not moved or archived.
so i just SSH into it. but that means i don't have a visual for all the localhost and network stuff that should be on.
it makes me realize, the way i have set up all my GUIs it's been to overcompensate for my #dyslexia, #dysgraphia, #prosopagnosia and #ADHD

A fantasia on aphantasiaOnce again, I interrupt my as-yet-still-untitled long-form story to bring you a personal blog post. This one’s not quite an ‘unpost’ but might nevertheless be a bit on the rambly and ill-formed side, hence ‘fantasia’. That’s because it’s a reaction to something I discovered about myself (and everyone else) only yesterday. And when I say yesterday, I literally mean Tuesday 27 November 2018. Mozart’s Fantasia in C minor, K.396 Unlike my unposts, this post has a picture attached. It’s the opening bar of a Mozart fantasia that I enjoy playing on the piano. Fantasias are pieces of music that spring from the imagination and don’t necessarily adhere to any particular compositional form. They’re often more interesting to me than sonatas, for instance, because they take all sorts of unexpected twists and turns. My life has taken quite a few unexpected twists and turns in the last couple of years, and to some extent it’s been a belated voyage of self-discovery for me. But yesterday’s revelation really came completely out of the blue, thanks to a tweet by autistic advocate and academic Shona Davison. She introduced me to the word aphantasia (and the derived word aphantasic). When I was in secondary school, I remember a teacher talking about ‘the mind’s eye’. She said it refers to how we see things in our imagination, but assured us that we don’t actually have an extra eye in our head – it’s just an expression. Fair enough, I thought – I’ll add that to my lexicon. Little did I realise at the time that my entirely abstract conception of the mind’s eye might not have been shared by any of my classmates. I’ve never had any doubt that some people can conjure up vivid images in their heads. People with photographic memory, for instance, or artists who can paint from memory. But these are exceptional people with rare talents. I’ve always assumed that when most people are asked to close their eyes and picture a favourite place, they’re doing much the same thing as me. When I close my eyes, the world goes dark. There are no visual images for me; maybe faint, brief, sub-millisecond flashes of light or shadowy nebulous blobs, but certainly nothing I have any control over.
