For me, a road to death, that you're aware of, includes having personal dignity & being able to live out your last days/weeks/months/years with as much joy & comfort as possible. I don't believe that terminally ill people deserve lesser than humane, compassionate care. I believe in protecting their fragile conditions, supporting them(and some of their loved ones) on difficult days & helping them to plan their own end of life journey.

Last week I was totally in my feels … The grief. The humanity. The stories. The quiet ache people carry behind their eyes. As I sat with the day, the confluence of chaplaincy, death, trauma, aging, culture, and the fragile beauty of being human moved through me like a tide. I felt overwhelmed with emotion — the kind that asks to be written down before it disappears into silence. So I wrote … because sometimes words are the only way to honor what the soul has witnessed ✨

On being a death doula: "sitting at the bedside with hospice patients inspires me to make the most of each moment in my own life and makes me more aware of my own mortality. Becoming a death doula has taught me about what to expect at the end of life and given me the opportunity to help others do the same."

I'm approaching the end of the funeral planning, just a few bits left to do.
At some point, I need to think about what I'll be saying in my part of her eulogy.

Meanwhile, I sent off the first list of questions about my new (volunteer) safeguarding role.

It looks like I have several, about 12?, different strands of voluntary work, but there are overlaps.

And I'm still thinking about my role in supporting end-of-life journeys. I can't afford any official training, but maybe I can offer to do informal support?

#DeathDoula work is very similar to #caregiving for most elderly folks, except you have a good idea of when the person you're helping is going to pass away. We need more people who aren't fearful of #death to enter death doula work. There's high demands for our services & not enough supply of experienced/trained death doulas. It took several years for us to get enough birth doulas & now we have many across Vancouver Island. Most folks enjoy being a part of helping bring in new lives. However, it's easier to recruit & get more folks interested in birth doula work than death doula work because I'm in Canada & Western societies have been programmed to fear death & not see it as just another beautiful life passage. It's near impossible to find more folks willing to learn to do death doula work. Most folks aren't OK with learning how to help folks have dignified deaths because of their personal fears of death. It saddens me because we will all get old & die one day - we need more folks willing to help with end of life doula work.

I'm a #writer. I like to write about #grief, #QueerIdentity, #hope, #praxis, and #harm + #reciprocity. (my websites are in my links!)

I have trained as a #DeathDoula, and I engage in #GriefWork & #DeathWork with and for my best beloveds: the #LGBTQIA2S+ community.

In my spare time you can find me hyperfocusing on whatever it is that I can't stop thinking about. I love a new game, a new favorite song, a new project management solution, and thinking about my chosen family and intentional community.

I'm #pagan, I am training in an old mystery tradition of pre-Gardnerian British traditional #witchcraft. We are from a long time ago and we are doing what it takes to support, love, and keep safe the people in our communities.

I will always fight for your right to #choose. I believe this right is a fundamental human gift.

A #CradleCatholic. As a wee lad, I did all the stuff - Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation. I was born here all my life. When I was around four years old, the church kicked out my mom and, by extension, my family. An #ExcludedCatholic? I explored other practices and faiths, #meditation, #yoga, #Buddhism, and all the things. I wanted to not convert to a religion or practice that I had not been born to or wasn't otherwise ancestrally connected. A deep dive into Protestant fellowships lead to immersion into the #EarlyChurch Fathers and early #ChurchHistory. Entering the #OrthodoxChurch, I lived in several monasteries and wandered around the US like the guy in Way of a Pilgrim. I was ultimately drawn to #Theosis and the #PrayerOfTheHeart, sometimes called the #JesusPrayer. Long story short, decades later, a pandemic, and a few ends of the world, here I am. The #2024Election US has me wondering about US Christianities that support social actions and movements that contradict the teachings of Jesus. Shouldn't Christ's Gospel teachings be central?
