  1. A quotation from Samuel Johnson

Sorrow is a kind of rust of the soul, which every new idea contributes in its passage to scour away. It is the putrefaction of stagnant life, and is remedied by exercise and motion.

Samuel Johnson (1709–1784) English writer, lexicographer, critic
Essay (1750-08-28), The Rambler, No. 47

  2. Strike

The phobia of a copperhead strike
is made real by the lunge of a
lawnmower into the brush to shred
the coiling orange and brown with
a screaming whump only to realize
that it was an eastern box turtle
    I had set upon.

Once again what I am afraid of
has led me to destroy what I love
and I weep, wondering if I will ever
    become one whose perceived fears
    are not acted on.

I did not look to see if the
    slowmover was dead
but I knew. I could see the
    bloody pieces of her
    shell scattered across
    the lawn.

    Sad Clarity

Sorrow has this unique potential to inflict upon you a sense of sudden clarity. The usual triggers are alcohol or a sad song you like.

Not clarity about a particular thing or idea.

Just clarity, as in, a clear mind to think.

Your mind can take you anywhere from here.

I usually waste it away brooding.

  4. A quotation from Euripides

JASON: I go — a father once; now childless.
MEDEA: You grieve too soon. Old age is coming.

  5. A quotation from The Talmud

When the Egyptians were drowning in the Red Sea, the angels in heaven began to break forth in songs of jubilation, but the Holy One, blessed be He, silenced them: “My creatures are perishing — and ye are ready to sing!”

    From Naeema:

“I stand strong in this photo… but inside me lies an entire city of sorrow.

The war stole our homes, our peace, and days that will never return.

Yet we continue to carry weary hearts, smiling only so the world cannot see the depth of the brokenness we live with. 💔”

  7. The Noumenon

    When I experience these days

    An emptiness in the heart

    A sorrow or a loss

    The missing of a friend

    A loneliness of some sort

On an evening such as this

    I tell myself

That is God letting me know

What it means to be human,

Me who have had my head

    Far too much buried

    In the depths of philosophy,

    And yet in understanding humanity

I understand not the why and wherefore

Of why we humans are like this

    Though there are some theories

That try and explain these things

And when I look into these experiences

With an idle curiosity of wonder

Without putting a name and label on them

    And not seeking any resolution

    I experience some unexplainable oneness

    With everything

That there is, was and will be.

  8. The Ache

    The ache dullens not

    Despite the passing hours

    It remains fresh as ever

    It is happy to exist

    Not demanding an end

As if it too has a right to exist

Like any other thing in this world.

Ask not what the ache is about’

It is at once about everything

    And at once about nothing

The kind of ache that exists

In a breast far from its origins.

  9. This Moment – Lost

a thought of beauty strikes me
and I must express it so

but as I reach to grasp it
    it flutters away,

    a moth,
    a feather,
    a small white bird
    startled by the motion
    of my wanting.

    my hand closes
    around nothing,

    void,

    and I stand there
    foolish with longing,
    as if the air itself
    had promised me a gift
    then taken it back.

    and I weep
    for the passing moment.

    it will never come again.

    not in that light,
    not with that breath,
not with the same small door
    opened briefly
    between the soul
    and the world.

  11. A quotation from Shakespeare

MARCUS: Sorrow concealèd, like an oven stopped,
Doth burn the heart to cinders where it is.

  13. Uneasy Wisdom

    Unlike that Athenian gadfly
I know, and I know that I know
    And I also know
    Joys of various hues
Have as much a claim on me
    As any good ol’ sorrows
And I know that my lot
    As that of all here
Is to be sitting on this seesaw
Until Newton’s First Law kicks in
And the seesaw is no longer seen.

  14. A quotation from Horace

Smiles are contagious; so are tears; to see
Another sobbing, brings a sob from me.
No, no, good Peleus; set the example, pray,
And weep yourself; then weep perhaps I may.

[Ut ridentibus adrident, ita flentibus adflent
humani voltus. Si vis me flere, dolendum est
primum ipsi tibi: tum tua me infortunia laedent,
    Telephe vel Peleu.]

Our anger and annoyance are more detrimental to us than the things themselves which anger or annoy us.

  18. Sorrow remembers us when day is done.
It sits in its old chair gently rocking
and singing tenderly in the evening…
