  3. I had the BEST time recording with @catherine_ashton_critical of Critical Info this morning! (Not, I must say, in an Oodie but Remy needed a walk 😉 ) We talked about end of life doulas, advance planning, grief, inclusive death care, and why a pet's death can be just as devastating as a human's.

Catherine's work is extraordinary and high-calibre, I encourage you to follow her if you don't already.

    What are your weekend plans??!

  7. Update on why advance planning is so incredibly important. It took a month to get our brother's body released for cremation because he had no planning in place. He was finally cremated earlier today.

  8. Today is Dying to Know Day, and as I've done for the past several years I ran an information and education session free to the public.

Advance planning, comparative pricing and sharing personal experiences are some of my favourite parts of these events.

How did you spend your D2KD this year?.

  11. After a fascinating and thought-provoking day of presentations which used the prompt "Rethinking end of life doulas and..." at Douglas College in New Westminster BC, I have a weekend to grapple with my jetlag before diving into our symposium work with the International End of Life Doula Research Group. Thank you to the End of Life Doula Association of Canada and Douglas College (which has a terrific training program for EOLDs, including First Nations people and cultural needs).

Including representatives from the four countries where EOLDs are most strongly represented (Australia -me! - Canada, UK and USA), this upcoming week will explore research options and ideas for the next year or two.

I suspect a truckload of grant writing is in my future!

Stay tuned for updates and have a great day. Oh Canada! 🇨🇦

  12. Wondering why I recommend a dedicated bank account to pay for your funeral? Because some schemes shamelessly rip people off.

  15. March 20-26 is Advance Care Planning Week - and if you are interested in home-based end of life care then good advance planning can help you get there.

Former USA president Jimmy Carter has opted for home-based hospice support, and this can be the norm when we all have strong death literacy and thorough advance planning.

Got questions? I'm here to help.

  16. CW: Discussion of funerals, VAD

Assisted dying has helped us realise that we can do death in more meaningful and personal ways - and this extends to funerals. Did you know, for example, that you can attend your own funeral while you are still alive?

Did you know that the Natural Death Advocacy Network (NDAN) offer bi-monthly information sessions that include some of the biggest names in the field - and that you don't have to be a member to attend?! The second half is a Q and A, but only available for NDAN members and is not recorded.

On April 2nd from 9-11am (GMT +11 Hobart/Melbourne time) Dr John Troyer will present on Technologies of the Human Corpse. Dr Troyer is the Director for Death and Society at the University of Bath, and a co-founder of the Death Reference Desk website.

You can book your tickets through trybooking here: trybooking.com/events/landing?

  19. Did you know that carer burnout is an urgent global health issue, and that carers for those who choose to die at home are in this group? Happily, the micro compassionate community Mallon Model is designed to help avoid carer burnout, and to streamline end of life doula work.

The open access journal article explaining the Mallon Model has now been downloaded over 2,700 times, and you can also access training workshops - in person and online - to learn how to maximise the benefits of the model, and to tailor it for individual situations.

Click here to access the article journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.11 or email [email protected] to arrange a workshop.
