  1. Here is my lazy Sunday question for you.

I remain surprised at the number of instructors (and other professionals) I meet that never held a job outside their field. Maybe I shouldn't be.

Did you have a job that wasn't in your field? Summer, temp, whatever. Just working exposure to a different world than your professional one?

  6. Interesting paper on citing behaviour in Psychology
    journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/

I think with my internal, slightly facetious, #postgrad talk on "How not to cite" I contribute to (Table 2) building cultural norms around good citing behaviour, but loads more to do!

  10. My university applications were successful! I have two offers and am deciding between them. UNE is excellent for online learning, while Deakin is great with accessibility and based in Melbourne. Both programs are similar, though Deakin has more electives, while UNE’s writing major is broader. At Deakin, I could specialise in professional writing, which is my main interest. Decisions, decisions! #Writing #Postgrad #HigherEd #DistanceLearning #WritingStudies

  16. I’ve been researching the digital literacy needs/barriers/behaviours of senior citizens for an essay and it’s highly interesting, but damn do I need more caffeine ☕️ 😅

  17. Imagine doing an online Masters, and there is only one paper copy of prescribed text.

The digital text can only be viewed by one person at a time. You cannot copy it, use text-to-speech and printing is limited to 50 pages.

The library refuses to change digital access.

  27. Death Literacy Barbie rides again!

Thank you ACAP Navitas in Sydney for a phenomenal four hours of engaged and curious, switched on Masters of Psychology class. Part of the life stages unit, I taught older adults, death literacy, meaning-making, advance planning, icebreaker conversation starters, and grief. We got through a LOT in four hours!

Big fun, cannot wait to come back.

  32. I feel I have been priced out of doing a #masters and it is the government's fault. Universities should be able to properly employ and pay #postgrad researchers so that candidates like me coming back to academia are adequately supported in making the transition. It essentially means only the rich and people with a partner/work to financially support them can return and cuts most marginalised folks out.

  34. Oh noes.. I just thought of another possible post-grad project..

The increased popularity of D&D as a cultural criminological phenomenon because it lets us take action against injustice in a world where we feel constantly disempowered.

People have already written a lot about this with regards to superheroes and comics etc, especially in relation to the whole War on Terror post 9-11 thing.

    Hagley & Harrison 2014
    Philips & Strobl 2013
    Philips & Strobl 2006
    Jewett & Lawrence 2003
    Lovell 2002

DnD shares a lot with superhero stories and with comic books:
    - Blurring of the line between crime and entertainment
    - Contribution to understandings of justice
    - Influence over public perceptions of social problems

    They share familiar themes:
    - Dominant notions of justice
    - Consensus view of crime and deviance
    - Nostalgia and patriotism
    - Retribution
    - Extra-legal responses to crime
    - Failures of the criminal justice system
    - Imagined communities

    They reinforce the status quo:
    - Attempt to ‘restore social order’
    - extra-legal vigilantism
    - retributive justice (Phillips & Strobl, 2006)
    - Criminals/villains are dangerous ‘agents of change’, while heroes are protectors of the status quo.

‘These villains frequently echo the concerns and conflicts of the culture from which they emerge’ (Fingeroth, 2004)
