This month I have the contract to do some communications tower inspections. Part of the work involves flying a drone up and down the towers, getting closeup aerial views of the antennas and other appurtenances, and so forth. My FAA Part 107 certificate for commercial operation of a drone is current, but I had to buy a new drone in order to get one with Remote ID, the FAA’s required beacon that uniquely identifies each drone. You can buy add-on modules to retrofit older drones with Remote ID, but I’m not going to mess with that. A new and better drone is fun, and this gig gave me the excuse I needed to buy one.
I spent the weekend getting it registered with the FAA, labeling it, purchasing insurance, and downloading the apps to coordinate flight operations with current airspace rules (which can change, so you have to check before each flight if you’re doing it right).
Tomorrow: first flight tests. If the check-out flights go well, I’m hoping to have time to do the first tower inspection, too.
