#1 Reaction Videos of The Transformers: The Movie – I can hardly believe it has been forty years since The Transformers: The Movie was first released. Following its disappointing theatrical run, the animated feature film became highly pursued by Transformers fans as soon as it was released on home video, and me and my friends enjoyed it a lot. It’s theatrical disappointment never stopped it from becoming a classic for Transformers fans and its importance in pop culture has been established solidly. By today’s standards, The Transformers: The Movie is a showcase of not only high-quality animation and a great lineup of characters, it also has the fine vocal performances of entertainment legends Orson Welles, Peter Cullen (who died recently), Leonard Nimoy, Scatman Crothers, Robert Stack, and Frank Welker. That said, it is not surprising that the 1986 animated film is featured in many movie reaction videos and I found the most entertaining ones for you to enjoy.

#2 Summer Bargains in Japan – Are there a lot of bargains offered by your local grocery or department stores during the summer season? In Japan, as captured by Nippon TV, a grocery store organized “all-you-can-stuff” events that offered customers the golden opportunities to accumulate as many fresh vegetables (sourced from the summer produce of local farms) as they can for a fixed rate per attempt. #4 The Indiana Jones Game Konami Was Never Allowed to Make – Time for retro gaming! Back in the 1980s, Konami was a very prolific producer of video games for both arcades and consoles. In 1987, Konami released Arumana no Kiseki for the Nintendo Family Computer (Famicom) disk system. What struck me when I first played the game was the many creative elements it shared with the 1984 film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The playable action hero was designed with close resemblance to Indiana Jones (complete with the fedora). The game even had locations that looked like they were ripped off from the 1984 movie. #5 Roger Moore Technically Played James Bond in The Cannonball Run – Released in 1981, The Cannonball Run was an all-star comedy film with an emphasis on racing and stunts. It was heavily inspired by a real-life illegal cross-country motor race that happened in America in the 1970s and the movie had the very popular celebrities of the time like Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Farrah Fawcett and Roger Moore. Moore, who was already famous as the cinematic James Bond, technically played Agent 007 in The Cannonball Run. #6 Jerusalem Walk Video – During the day-off of the Israel pilgrimage tour I joined in 2023, I took the rare opportunity to explore the city of Jerusalem on foot. I started the day at the Old City of Jerusalem where I visited the Temple Mount, the Western Wall and other holy sites before marching all the way to the modern part of Jerusalem going as far as the famous Mahane Yehuda market. #5 Western Women Who Embraced Islam End Up Wrong – Did you notice that there is a growing number of women in the West who embraced Islam believing the fantasies that it is a religion of peace and is feminist? #7 Ashleigh Burton’s Reaction To Witness – The 1980s will always be a memorable decade of Harrison Ford’s cinematic performances. During that decade, he appeared in two Star Wars movies and he was the center of attraction in the original Indiana Jones trilogy. Along the way, he appeared in the 1985 crime thriller film Witness in which he played a police detective protecting an Amish woman and her son. The movie earned several Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and even Best Actor for Harrison Ford. Este verano, charlando con un amigo con el que hacía mucho tiempo que no coincidía, me preguntó si había visto alguna serie o película que pudiera recomendar. Tras unos segundos de silenció, la respuesta fue «no me acuerdo de la última vez que fui al cine». Los dos nos reímos y pasamos a hablar de otros temas, pero ese momento se me quedó grabado en la memoria y llevo dándole vueltas desde entonces. El caso es que, desde que tengo memoria, el cine ha formado parte de mi vida en mayor o menor medida. Muchos de los recuerdos que tengo de mi infancia son de ir al cine con mis padres y mis primos. Recuerdo ser incapaz de mentir sobre mi edad a la entrada para que me dejasen pasar a ver una película (no recuerdo cual, pero esa historia forma parte del lore familiar desde entonces). También recuerdo a mi hermana pequeña corriendo durante la hora y media de Los Cazafantasmas en un cine de verano al aire libre sin hacerle ni puto caso a la película. Me acuerdo perfectamente de estar en una sala de cine llena de niños gritando y llorando como locos en la estampida de El Rey León porque el volumen estaba al 11. Recuerdo ir a ver Matrix con unos amigos sin tener ni la más remota idea de qué íbamos a ver, y salir del cine alucinado. Recuerdo ver la trilogía original de Star Wars tumbado en mi cama a lo largo de tres fines de semana porque la daban en la extinta Canal 9 (la televisión autonómica de la Comunidad Valenciana). Y sin embargo, durante los últimos cinco años, creo que podría contar las veces que he ido al cine con los dedos de una mano, y el número total de películas que he visto, con los de las manos y los pies. Si la lista se reduce a las obras que me han gustado de verdad, creo que me costaría elegir más de dos o tres títulos.

¿Qué ha cambiado?, ¿será que estoy viejo?, ¿o igual me ha destrozado la capacidad de atención internet y las redes sociales?, ¿me da pereza salir de casa para meterme en una sala llena de gente encendiendo el móvil cada cinco minutos?, ¿o quizás es que el cine ha pasado de ser un vehículo artístico para ser una industria globalizada e hipercapitalista, perdiendo en el proceso mucho de su atractivo? Posiblemente el motivo exacto tenga un poco que ver con todas estas cuestiones, pero creo que el mayor problema es otro. El cine (y de paso la televisión, ya que estamos) ha perdido su magia.

Cuando mejor funciona el cine es cuando logra ese momento místico en el que un espectador entra en la sala y se ve transportado a otro universo, totalmente nuevo y ajeno al nuestro. En ese escenario, tu mente escapa del ruido mundano durante un par de horas y te ves inmerso en una historia que es capaz de resonar en tu interior durante días, semanas o incluso años. Historias que emocionan, que enseñan valores y que durante décadas han sido capaces de inspirar a miles de personas (haz la prueba, pregunta a la gente que tienes a tu alrededor y verás como todo el mundo tiene películas favoritas, que les han marcado o que les han hecho ver el mundo de manera distinta). Sin embargo, durante las últimas décadas, Hollywood se ha dedicado a corromper esa magia de mil y una maneras distintas. Es más, un observador externo podría concluir en que todas y cada una de las decisiones que ha adoptado la industria han ido en detrimento de esa inmersión que consiguió atraer a tanta gente al medio.

Hoy en día se hacen películas que, si bien tienen en mente a un público cada vez más amplio, son fracasos estrepitosos en taquilla. Que nadie me entienda mal, a mí me parece perfecto que el cine se abra a nuevos públicos. No tiene ningún tipo de sentido que se hagan películas sólo para una pequeña fracción de la sociedad. Ahora bien, si quieres contar una historia que resuene con un cierto público objetivo, deberías centrarte en ese público y despreocuparte del resto. El problema es que, como comentaba anteriormente, el cine se ha convertido en una industria multimillonaria en la que cada proyecto maneja presupuestos inmensos, y los objetivos comerciales siempre están por encima de los artísticos. En vez de hacer películas pequeñas para un público específico, la norma es hacer películas inmensas que pretenden tener miles de millones de recaudación, y la única manera de conseguir eso es llevando al mayor número posible de gente al cine. El resultado es que tenemos películas con elencos de personajes de muchas culturas y colectivos, pero no son mas que reclamos sin sustancia alguna, con el único objetivo de embaucar al público para que acuda a las salas. De este modo, si bien tenemos un medio que es capaz de llegar a cualquier rincón del mundo, es incapaz de conectar con la gente de manera profunda, cosa que sí lograban las obras del siglo pasado aún teniendo un alcance mucho menor.

Por otra parte, y es posible que aquí me quede un poco sólo, la tecnología ha sido un palo en las ruedas del medio. Todas y cada una de esas películas «míticas» de mi infancia que puedo nombrar (Alien, Conan, Star Wars, Blade Runner, Willow, Indiana Jones, Dentro del Laberinto, Cristal Oscuro, The Blues Brothers, Los Inmortales, El Señor de los Anillos, Jumanji, Hook, La Historia Interminable, La Princesa Prometida, Excalibur, Terminator, y un largo etcétera) comparten muchas cosas: todas tienen grano, todas tienen efectos especiales prácticos o poco CGI, todas tienen bandas sonoras originales impecables y un sonido muy cuidado, especialistas de arte que proporcionan un estilo único y homogéneo a la obra, todas van a ~30 fotogramas por segundo, etc. Por contra, hoy en día tenemos obras con una definición increíble, grabadas en formatos digitales donde no hay nada de ruido pero tan mal iluminadas que es imposible distinguir ningún detalle salvo cuando los personajes se encuentran al aire libre a las 12 del medio día, donde durante las escenas de acción, si bien todo es perfectamente nítido porque se puede grabar a mas de 120 fotogramas por segundo, es imposible distinguir nada, ya que hay cuarenta cortes en una escena de veinte segundos de duración que ha necesitado ocho meses de postprocesado porque se grabó en una pantalla verde. El resultado final, incluso cuando todos esos avances técnicos se usan a la perfección (que conste que hay ejemplos de grandes directores utilizando nuevas tecnologías, quizás mi favorito sea David Fincher), es que cuando veo una película moderna no tengo la sensación de estar viendo cine. Igual que cuando veo una foto tomada con mi móvil pienso «se ve mejor que la vida real» y automáticamente pasa a ser una foto más, en vez de un recuerdo como las fotografías impresas tomadas con una cámara de verdad, me pasa lo mismo con el cine. Recuerdo ir a ver Avatar 2 y ser incapaz de meterme en la historia porque todo se movía a 60 fotogramas por segundo. Recuerdo ver películas de Marvel y que el CGI pocho me rompiera la inmersión, mientras que los dinosaurios de Jurassic Park y las marionetas de Cristal Oscuro me siguen transportando instantáneamente a sus universos a día de hoy. El cine es magia, y esa magia, en mi cabeza, sigue estando asociada a lo analógico. Tiene que haber ruido, tiene que haber color (te odio Zack Snyder, odio a tu Superman gris y a todas las películas cuya gama cromática se reduce a cuatro tonos de azul oscuro), tiene que moverse a la velocidad adecuada y las bandas sonoras tienen que emocionar y ser memorables (¿podrías tararearme la canción de Thor en las películas de los vengadores sin buscarla en internet?).

Al mismo tiempo que ocurre todo esto, nos vemos bombardeados por una vorágine sin fin de obras con nula originalidad. Cada año vemos más y más remakes, reboots, secuelas, precuelas y adaptaciones de libros, series y videojuegos. Lejos ha quedado la época en la que de la nada surgían nuevas historias nunca antes vistas. La primera vez que vi Star Wars mi mente voló a una galaxia muy muy lejana de manera instantánea, pero la decimoquinta vez que entro en el universo, la experiencia deja de ser mágica y se vuelve mundana. Del mismo modo, el cine ha tomado prestada una característica del mundo del cómic que, en mi humilde opinión, es tremendamente nociva: la interconectividad. A raíz del éxito del universo cinemático de Marvel, con docenas de películas y series de televisión interconectadas que han logrado cautivar a miles de millones de personas a lo largo del planeta, la industria se ha subido al carro y, hoy en día, cualquier película forma parte de un todo mucho mayor. No resulta nada raro ver un cartel en el cine que te llame la atención, y descubrir que antes de ver la película deberías haber visto una trilogía de un personaje que aparece de refilón, una serie en una plataforma de streaming, y haber echado un par de tardes en la Wikipedia para entender el trasfondo de todo. El hecho de que las obras ya no sean autocontenidas deja cada vez menos espacio a la imaginación. El ejemplo perfecto, de nuevo, es la saga de Star Wars. Durante la primera trilogía, la fuerza era un elemento místico y misterioso, al igual que los Jedi y sus sables láser. Un espectador podía darle vueltas y vueltas a la filosofía detrás de la obra, llenando los huecos que dejaban esas tres películas en su cabeza, ya que estas eran incapaces de detallar todos y cada uno de los elementos de ese vasto universo en el que convivían decenas de razas alienígenas y facciones totalmente distintas. A día de hoy, con nueve películas en la saga principal, varios spin-offs y origins, y más de una decena de series de televisión con varias temporadas a sus espaldas, todos y cada uno de los detalles del universo han sido explicados hasta la saciedad (además, de manera terrible… midiclorianos, Obi-Wan haciendo de niñera inepta, Han Solo pagafantas, el origen de los sables láser, etc.), sin nada de espacio para que la imaginación pueda volar un rato tras el visionado. Así, del mismo modo que se rompe la ilusión cuando alguien te explica cómo un mago lleva a cabo sus trucos, las sagas pierden su misticismo y sus películas dejan de ilusionar.

Afortunadamente, siempre quedan reductos en los que buscar refugio. Otro de los temas que salieron en esa conversación con mi amigo fue sobre qué videojuegos habíamos jugado últimamente, y al darle vueltas al tema he caído en la cuenta de que justamente ese medio ha sido capaz de capturar la magia que se ha perdido en el cine. En el último par de años he pasado cientos de horas explorando mazmorras en varios Zelda, viajando a caballo entre Novigrado y Skellige en The Witcher 3, desentrañando los misterios de Disco Elysium, Outer Wilds, Hotline Miami y Prey, y siendo un mero espectador dentro de mundos inmensos con historias que abarcan miles de años y cuyos engranajes se pusieron en movimiento mucho antes de yo tomar los mandos (Dark Souls, Elden Ring). Historias que he tenido que desentrañar conectando piezas desperdigadas a lo largo de peligrosas mazmorras, planetas distantes o regiones inmensas llenas de vida, o hablando con personajes misteriosos que hablan sobre profecías enrevesadas con múltiples interpretaciones. Leyendas que me hicieron reflexionar y que, en muchas ocasiones, me enseñaron cosas que desconocía sobre nuestro mundo y sobre mí mismo. Viajes a través de mundos ricos en detalles pero llenos de incógnitas, que dejan huecos que sólo la mejor creadora puede rellenar: la imaginación del jugador. Y esto, sin duda, es una experiencia mágica.

Recensione “Indiana Jones e il Quadrante del Destino” (2023)

L’incipit è trascinante: siamo nella Germania nazista, Indiana Jones come al solito è circondato da soldati nemici e si è ficcato inevitabilmente nei guai. C’è ironia, c’è un treno di opere d’arte trafugate, c’è ritmo, ci sono i buoni e ci sono i cattivi, è tutto talmente evidente e manicheo che è quasi perfetto: è praticamente l’essenza di Indiana Jones. Gli ottimi propositi tuttavia durano poco, perché purtroppo il film non sarà tutto così (sarebbe un miracolo). Mangold è bravo, ma prendere una saga dalle mani di Steven Spielberg e tentare di replicarne la verve, la visione, la gioia dell’immagine è una missione pressoché suicida. Quel che peggio, sembra non aver assolutamente compreso l’insegnamento che tutti abbiamo appreso proprio grazie ai film di Indiana Jones: certe reliquie non devono essere toccate, pena l’arrivo sul groppone di enormi macigni.

Siamo nel 1969. L’uomo è appena sbarcato sulla Luna e il professor Jones è ormai a un passo dalla pensione. Riceve dopo anni la visita della sua figlioccia Helen, che gli prende dalle mani un oggetto antico per poterlo rivendere a un’asta clandestina. L’oggetto in questione è una parte del quadrante del titolo, uno strumento creato da Archimede che, secondo la leggenda, consentirebbe a chi ne è in possesso di aprire varchi nel tempo e cambiare così la storia: neanche a dirlo, è un gingillo che fa gola soprattutto a un ingegnere tedesco e ai suoi scagnozzi che, già avrete capito, non sono tipi da rinnegare la svastica. Ed è così che parte l’ennesima avventura di Indiana Jones, sbattuto tra il Marocco, il Mar Egeo e la Sicilia, nel classico blockbuster giramondo dove l’ennesimo inseguimento da cartolina, lungo quindici minuti, a un certo punto riuscirebbe a far urlare anche un muto.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, la grande novità di questo nuovo capitolo, è totalmente sprecata ma, quel che peggio, il suo personaggio è molto meno divertente di quanto ci si possa aspettare dalla protagonista del sorprendente Fleabag. Insomma, c’è ben poco da salvare in questo film, tra enigmi alla Dan Brown, un ragazzino-accollo che non aggiunge assolutamente nulla alla storia (il nuovo Shorty? Non proprio) e l’antagonista più inutile della storia di Indiana Jones (nonostante abbia le fattezze di un attore di alto livello come Mads Mikkelsen: anche lui evidentemente ha delle bollette da pagare). A condire il tutto, qualche cameo di vecchi amici e un paio di riferimenti al passato che strizzano l’occhio, con piacere, agli ex-bambini degli anni 80. “Questo dovrebbe stare in un museo!”, urla a un certo punto Harrison Ford: ecco, anche al suo Indiana Jones andrebbe messa una bella teca intorno al cappello e alla frusta, per lasciare che fortuna e gloria, eternamente, alimentino il suo mito. Senza toccarlo mai più, per favore.
