  1. #Books #Teaching #Controversy
I've read books by angry people, and I've taken a college class taught by an earnest convert who disdained those who hold to his former beliefs. I've also sat on a commisison that had to consider complaints by offended, upset people. In none of this cases did I start out with a position in the matter.

In my experience, stridency weakens arguments. At the least, it gets in my way when I consider the positions--even if it elicits sympathy, this may be coupled with suspicion. Commonly, it raises a "Why are they protesting so hard?" flag. Almost always, my response is "Argue with them, not with me; just present your understandings. If I want theirs, I'll go to them. If you describe their positions, if you provide curated excerpts of what they say, it looks sketchy. The best you can do for someone who rolls the way i do is to say, "There are others who differ with me. Here are some references/links where you can look at their reasoning."

    How do I respond?
I withdrew from the class, after giving it almost three months.
In conversation, I move on when I can tactfully quash a diatribe (against some other, but delivered to me), I'm making allowances for someone I care about who's hurting.
I've a similar experience with books.
When I sit on a commission, I struggle to listen for documentable who-what-when-where-amount facts. Whether the emotional overlay tugs at me or irritates me, either way it's not what I'm tasked to consider, primarily.
    TBC

  13. RE: mastodon.bsd.cafe/@grahamperri

Why did I intentionally mash things up, in my October 2025 post to Reddit?

Because I wanted to ask something about AI.

I knew that what I truly wanted to post would be immediately hijacked by selfish anti-AI protesters who had zero interest in helping me.

So, I intentionally mashed my AI-related question with an unrelated controversial statement by a FreeBSD committer: "There is very little official about the FreeBSD forums. …". I refrained from providing a source for the quote – so readers could not easily identify the name of the committer.

The controversy of the mash-up made my post popular. I paid the expected price – people lying about me in The FreeBSD Forums, ad hominem abuse in Reddit, and so on – but ultimately, the ulterior motive worked:

    ― I gained an LLM-oriented answer.

  17. theguardian.com/society/2026/j. I am extremely glad to hear it! This from Professor Simon Baron-Cohen is somewhat late in the day, @KatyElphinstone. "Baron-Cohen has previously sparked #controversy in the #autism #community, dating back to his 'extreme male brain' theory, which was criticised for framing autism as an #empathy deficit & reinforcing #gender stereotypes. In fact... his own #research showed... autistic people tend to differ in cognitive #empathy... but not affective empathy..."
