If you have ever heard that "we are a republic, not a democracy" mantra from edgy Right-wingers who can't seem to define what they mean by a #republic or a #democracy, you may be wondering where the heck that goofiness came from.

We did too. But we had a tough time finding a decent explanation of its beginnings & its arc through #AmericanHistory.

So we tracked down as many of the phrase's originators as we could and who had regularly used it since.
Super surprise, it has been pretty much consistently a shibboleth of racist and antisemitic xenophobes.
