Defense chief Pete Hegseth is reinstating a large painting of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee—shown in uniform and with a slave—at West Point, reversing recent efforts to remove Confederate imagery from military institutions. Originally installed in 1952 during the Jim Crow era to rehabilitate Lee’s image, the painting’s return comes after Congress had ordered removal of such symbols in 2020. The move is sparking debate over history, race, and which legacies should be honored at America’s storied military academy.
