"Pete Hegseth’s holy war: the militant Christian theology animating the US attack on Iran
The Bible-thumping US defense secretary is overseeing another strategic disaster in the Middle East. Is this a war or a crusade?
Hegseth’s distinct combination of piety and bloodlust was most prominently on display at the 25 March worship service at the Pentagon, the first since the war in Iran began, when he prayed for 'overwhelming violence of action against those who deserve no mercy'. The prayer was so shocking that it appears to have provoked a direct rebuke from Pope Leo, who preached on Palm Sunday that God ignores the prayers of those whose 'hands are full of blood' from making war.
Hegseth will hardly mind harsh words from the head of the Catholic church, however. The 45-year-old US army veteran and former Fox News host is a member of an obscure, deeply Calvinist wing of evangelical Christianity – John Calvin broke from the Catholic church during the 16th-century Protestant Reformation – that rejects the pope’s authority and is rooted in a belief in predestination.
'They believe that nothing happens that isn’t in God’s will,' said Julie Ingersoll, a professor of religious studies at the University of North Florida, who researches this branch of Reformed Christianity. 'They believe that God directs everything that happens.'

After studying the history of #deals between #Iran & the West and what’s been offered now, and since Trump tore the last deal up, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s definitely not about #nuclearweapons.
The nuclear weapons are clearly a ruse. What’s being offered is a much larger capitulation deal, far beyond nuclear.

Then, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, standing in the Pentagon, issued a call to the American people for a specific kind of wartime prayer. He asked them to pray for victory in battle and the safety of their troops.
'Every day, on bended knee, with your family, in your schools, in your churches,' he said, 'in the name of Jesus Christ.'
At a time when the U.S. and Israeli militaries are dropping thousands of bombs on a majority-Shiite Muslim nation, the explicitly Christian nature of Mr. Hegseth’s call stood out.
More than any top American military leader in recent history, Mr. Hegseth has framed U.S. military operations in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America as bigger than politics or foreign policy. And last month in Munich, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said America and Europe were bonded together as civilizations by 'Christian faith.'

Scouting America said it had staved off a demand from the Pentagon to ban girls from the organization and change its name back to Boy Scouts of America.
Scouting America will discontinue programs and policies aimed at promoting diversity in order to maintain support from the Department of Defense, the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, said on Friday.
Mr. Hegseth also said that the organization was banning transgender people from openly participating, but Scouting America said the claim that it had changed its policies on transgender members was false.
'Scouting America will continue to welcome all youth into our programs, and we remain committed to creating an environment where all youth feel valued and respected,' the organization said in a statement sent to The New York Times.
Roger Krone, the president and chief executive of Scouting America, said to The Associated Press that 'we have transgender people in our program and we’ll have transgender people in our program going forward.'
In his announcement, Mr. Hegseth attacked Scouting America and the changes the organization had made in recent years to become more inclusive and tolerant. In hyperbolic language, he decried the organization as anti-American and railed against what he called transgenderism' 'Earth-centered pagan religions' and other 'insidious radical woke ideology' that he said had crept into its values.
After that announcement, Scouting America released a statement saying that it was 'making programmatic updates to comply with Executive Order 14173,' a declaration from President Trump that aimed to eliminate all policies that promoted diversity, equity and inclusion in the federal government. Many other details of the agreement remained unclear.
As part of the move to abandon diversity efforts, Mr. Hegseth said Scouting America had agreed to do away with the 'Citizenship in Society' merit badge, which is earned by scouts who 'realize the benefits of diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethical leadership.' An advisory on Scouting America’s website said that badge was discontinued effective Friday."

One religious scholar is warning that the 2026 midterm elections could prompt a violent response from far-right evangelical Christians.
During a Monday interview with Zeteo host John Harwood, Public Religion Research Institute founder and president Robert P. Jones – who holds an M. Christian nationalist hate pastor Joel Webbon invited neo-Nazi influencer Nick Fuentes onto his show, where they both pushed the idea that maybe Adolf Hitler and fascism weren’t so bad after all. Their conversation is just the latest example of the right-wingers embracing Fuentes and his extremist views.

In June 2024, Webbon went off on 'degenerate' gays, saying that death, as a 'maximum penalty,' would act as a deterrent to homosexuality. He also heartily agreed with a guest that 17% of gay men regularly eat feces.
Webbon has also previously said that Black civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. is in Hell and that racist, slave-owning Confederate leaders are in Heaven.
Fuentes has referred to Black people as n-words, said that 'the GOP is run by Jews, atheists, and homosexuals,' described Adolf Hitler as 'really fu**ing cool,' has cast doubt that the Holocaust happened, said 'perfidious Jews' must 'be given the death penalty' after 'we take power,' and said, 'A lot of women want to be raped… They want a guy to beat the s**t out of them.'
The leader of the massively influential GOP think tank, the Heritage Foundation, called Fuentes 'a friend' to Republicans after right-wing broadcaster Tucker Carlson held a softball interview with Fuentes without challenging any of his extremist views. President Trump also dined with Fuentes in 2022."
