  4. 2/21 The 1860 #election of #AbrahamLincoln became the "last straw" for #Southerners.

    Alabama #secession documents declared: "the election of Mr. Lincoln cannot be regarded otherwise than a solemn declaration...of hostility to the South, her property and her institutions" (which, as we've seen, was precisely slavery).

    In other words, the #CivilWar was a rejection of — and retaliation to — *a presidential election with progressive results.*

  5. Turns out "scallywag" was a derogatory term for post #civilwar #Southerners who helped #black folks gain freedom and prosperity by joining the republicans and supporting the #Freedman's bureau. Sounds like a great title to claim for any proud… toot.cat/@anubis2814/10…
