  1. Yellow Forest (2026).

Inks and gouache on paper. For Sale.

I wanted to explore the feeling of being completely alone on a planet. It's a feeling I got from the game Elite, an MMO which maps out the entire galaxy and you can actually fly to and land everywhere. The known parts of the galaxy are based on real astronomy data, the rest is generated. You can even travel to Sagittarius A, the black hole at the center of it, but it takes real life weeks. I never did it because apparently there are griefers hanging out there, that will kill you instantly when you arrive. It's a very cool game though, I've never felt so lonely in a game as being very far away from civilization on some distant world just discovering ancient Alien ruins and stuff like that. It's actually not a terrible feeling, but a quite cool one. You feel a bit special and chosen and stuff like that. It's the feeling I guess people who do science in antarctica will feel, but obviously I bet they feel it more intensely. Plus the sound in that game is excellent and will give Star Wars a run for its money.

This planet also feels lonely like that sometimes, and completely desolate and broken.

  3. Tiny gouache painting of a tulip.

Tried it with a water brush first, but I couldn’t get the correct paint consistency. I’ll either have to take proper brushes and a cup on the holiday or just take watercolour instead.

5x5cm sketchbook and my dried gouache.

  11. Back after a summerbreak.
I believe that here in Strasbourg we find ourselves in heatwave 4… Hope it is less hot wherever you are. My paint dries too quickly, even with a slow drying medium in the mix.

  13. It’s fair to say that at this point, I’m obsessed. This is the result of following an absolutely genius series of tutorials from Ruth Wilshaw. Of course, mine isn’t identical to hers, mine has a lot more mushrooms, but I never would have painted this spread if it weren’t for her fine instruction. #gouache #landscape #painting

  15. July 2026 Art Recap

July was a slower month for me. It was the last month of school for the kids and things were a bit hectic as everything needed to be wrapped up. It was also stinking hot at times. Still, a few things were done.

    1. Gouache
    2. Watercolour
    3. Watercolour Pencils
    4. Inktense

    Gouache

I took my gouache and my Hahnemühle Toned 14×14 sketchbook outside and tried plein air painting with it. Not entirely successful, but it was nice and quite time.

I also continued in my tiny 5x5cm sketchbook. Actually not that easy to paint so tiny!

    Watercolour

I combined all my paints into one palette. Having both the “normal” and the granulating paints together now makes for a really versatile setup!

Inspired by Colin Woodward, I tried my hand at a super minimal landscape. I think that worked well!

I also tried out sketching with a popsicle stick broken in half and India ink. That was fun and I think I’ll have to try that again!

Started on a page of tiny 5x5cm sketches in a bigger sketchbook, too.

    Watercolour Pencils

We’ll be going on a big trip to the Faroe Islands in August and I started to think about my art supplies. I thought about taking watercolour pencils instead of paints as that seemed easier. I tried a few paintings. Some were OK, but I think I’ll stick to watercolour.

    Inktense

I tried those again. Nope, not for me.

  17. Yesterday I learned how to paint mushrooms using photos from the internet. This is gouache on black cotton paper. I feel like this week I learned better how to see things in order to paint them. When we draw with a pencil or pen, we draw lines. This is in contrast to when we paint; we paint regions of colors, or in this case, regions of values. What’s different for me now is when I look at something like a cluster of mushrooms, I can see a the whole as a big area of shadow with some regions of highlights, or maybe a big area of highlights with regions of shadows. In either case, there are almost no lines. Everything is blobs. #painting #gouache #botany

  19. A bit late to the #ProPorly challenge.

Donna Summer, as my very first attempt at painting a (human) portrait in gouache. 🎨🐸

  21. Messing around with tiny circular landscapes in pink gouache. These show that you can use any hue to make a landscape and show depth. It’s really the values that matter most. These are each 3 inches in diameter. Which one is your favorite? #gouache #painting #landscape

  23. I painted a bunch of little gouache paintings yesterday in hopes of learning some new skills. Most of them aren’t very good, but I’m happy with this one of a meteor shower. It’s smaller than a typical playing card; so it’s probably bigger on your phone than it is in real life. In addition to the gouache, you can see I also used a little white colored pencil for the glow. I learned that using an angled flat brush makes it easier to blend out the tails than using a round or liner brush. The flat brush is easier to control, less wiggle.

    From a tutorial by Ruth Wilshaw. #painting #gouache #astronomy
