Milky Way Galaxy

I learned the Milky Way has way more than two arms. I painted five of them, but I think there might be a couple more if you look closely. I also learned the Milky Way is not as flat as I thought it was. I included one arm that looks like it’s doing its own thing, but it is actually supposed to be coming out of the page. This gigantic, spinning galaxy with all that matter flying around it, it makes sense that it wouldn’t all stay in a single plane with two perfectly formed arms. Right?

Gouache painting of a blue eclipse of the sun by the moon because @Alairthephoenix suggested a blue one.

I enjoy playing with visual illusions. I continue to be amazed at how we can make paper look brighter by selectively making it darker. I painted the background first and then the moon. It’s interesting how the illusion of glow only really started to appear after I painted the moon.

I have a good friend who is an eclipse seeker. He just had a birthday. So I painted him an eclipse he can look at directly. The idea that we can make paper look brighter by selectively making it darker is still remarkable to me.

Someone suggested that I paint a landscape with that crazy color triad I tried out in my last color wheel, the one with fluorescent pink, vivid teal, and muted yellow. So here it is! Now, one of the colors I used is opera pink, which contains fluorescent dye, and fluorescent paints are ALWAYS fugitive, which means they will fade over time with exposure to light. So I mixed in some better lightfast magenta with the pink, so that when the fluorescence fades, the pink will still remain. All the rest of these colors aren’t going anywhere.

Tiny gouache painting of a tulip.

Tried it with a water brush first, but I couldn’t get the correct paint consistency. I’ll either have to take proper brushes and a cup on the holiday or just take watercolour instead.

July 2026 Art Recap

July was a slower month for me. It was the last month of school for the kids and things were a bit hectic as everything needed to be wrapped up. It was also stinking hot at times. Still, a few things were done.

1. Gouache

Gouache

I took my gouache and my Hahnemühle Toned 14×14 sketchbook outside and tried plein air painting with it. Not entirely successful, but it was nice and quite time.

I also continued in my tiny 5x5cm sketchbook. Actually not that easy to paint so tiny!

Watercolour

I combined all my paints into one palette. Having both the “normal” and the granulating paints together now makes for a really versatile setup!

Inspired by Colin Woodward, I tried my hand at a super minimal landscape. I think that worked well!

I also tried out sketching with a popsicle stick broken in half and India ink. That was fun and I think I’ll have to try that again!

Started on a page of tiny 5x5cm sketches in a bigger sketchbook, too.

Watercolour Pencils

We’ll be going on a big trip to the Faroe Islands in August and I started to think about my art supplies. I thought about taking watercolour pencils instead of paints as that seemed easier. I tried a few paintings. Some were OK, but I think I’ll stick to watercolour.

Inktense

I tried those again. Nope, not for me.

The Golden Fleecegon

Part-sheep, part-eastern dragon, full fluffy

[In actuality, this was a mixed media present for my niece's 14th birthday who not only loves sheep, she also was born in the year of the Golden dragon. I thought why not combine the two to make a whimsical creature. Luckily, she really loves it and is now a proud owner of hanging the original painting in her bedroom]

Six months of doing art

Wow, so it’s already the beginning of July and therefore six months since I started drawing and painting. A few things happened in June:

1. Another new sketchbook
2. Tiny painting
3. Granulating watercolour
4. Derwent Inktense pencils
5. Gouache

Another new sketchbook

I made another sketchbook! This time with Khadi 150gsm 100% cotton paper. It took a while as each signature is exactly one sheet, but it does lie flat! I also took apart an cook book I found at the recycling center for the covers and I wrapped the back cover in one of it’s pages. Not the neatest job, but it kinda fits with how the paper also doesn’t have neat edges.

Tiny painting

I continued with the tiny painting in watercolour. Not that much as I was distracted by other stuff, though.

Granulating watercolour

I also got some Khadi paper in A7 and played around on it with my set of granulating watercolours. The paper warps quite a bit while it’s wet, so next time I think I’ll go for one their thicker stocks.

I tried to be pretty loose here and played around with adding paint before the line work. That was pretty freeing but not always successful.

Derwent Inktense pencils

My wife has this set of Derwent Inktense pencils and I’ve seen some fun stuff done with them, so I spent some time trying the out. Probably not my preferred medium, but they are very convenient.

Gouache

And lastly the gouache! This is turning out to be my favourite medium. It’s similar to watercolour, but you can get opaque layers with it, so you don’t have to plan as much as you do with watercolour. Also, the paper isn’t that critical.

I am still using my tiny set of basic colours and they work great. I did eye some extra colours, but somehow I don’t really feel the urge that strongly, which I good.

Also, I got these super cute 5x5cm sketchbooks and now I can combine my love of tiny paintings with gouache, too! Expect more tiny insects in the future.

Continuing with the insects in the tiny sketchbook. That’s a lot of fun.

Went back to my (dried) gouache palette. I am finally getting the hang of it, I think! So different due to the way you layer the paints as compared to watercolor. Somehow landscapes work with gouache for me, but not with watercolor. 🤷🏻‍♂️

May 2026 Art Recap

Another month is over and wow I didn’t expect to have so much to show, but I guess a whole month is actually a long time? 🤣

Gouache

I feel like I made the most progress with my gouache work this month. It is quite different from watercolour and it took me a while to figure out how I like to work with it. Due to it’s opacity it’s just not possible to sketch with pen first and then fill in with paint. In the end what I do now is to block the biggest shapes first with colour and then refine around them. Sometimes I use a Faber-Castell Pitt Oil Base pencil to go over it, but I am increasingly just using gouache on it’s own.

Watercolour

The main highlight in watercolour from this month is that I went out sketching from life for the first time (or “en plein air” to use the fancy French term). I kitted out my setup with some clips with magnets on, so that everything is combined into one. That in itself was a fun exploration.

I then also reorganized my palette and removed a few paints so that I could use the whole middle row for a sponge. Now it’s super easy to dry off my brushes. And no, I will not have fewer greens and blues.

The Crete project

One fun thing I did did month was also to paint the same subject multiple times. First in watercolour and then eventually in gouache. I learned so much doing this and the improvements are quite noticeable, I think. This is the original subject.

Granulating paints palette

I also explored creating a watercolour palette only with granulating paints. I first used the following:

I wasn’t super happy with how pale everything was. And the Raw Umber and Ultramarine were also too strong for the remaining colours. I then researched a bit and ended up with this:

This is a much more balances palette. The Siennas don’t granulate much, but they are great in mixes. The Vocano Yellow and Green Earth are borderline too low tinting, but still OKish.

I still need to go out and paint with them, but here are all the mixes you can get with them (minus the black) and some of them are just wild!

Tiny Paintings

I haven’t done much, just two more and I am now up to 18. I might still make the 100 until the 12 months are over. There’s still a lot of time, of course. Again, I redid the subject, because I wasn’t happy with my first try.

DIY sketchbook

I also started making my own sketchbooks! I’ve done origami and paper crafts in general for many years so that wasn’t too hard! I kept it simple and just used some of my A4 watercolour paper and folded it in half. So no cutting to size or anything. The next one is already in the works, but I guess that will be for next month.
