  1. I know I'm frequently bitchy, but this online art workshop I'm doing now is chockablock with annoying, cringey and clueless people. Plus this group, Art School Live, upsells their stuff and their sponsers' stuff relentlessly. The artists' content is good enough so I'm learning stuff. But the dipshits in the chat and QVC like push to buy stuff means I will not be doing one of these again.

  2. Swan on Blue

Another watercolor piece with a bit of gouache and color pencil! This was a joy of an experiment, and is also up for sale in my shop ^-^

  3. Sometimes I think I’m going to loosen up my panting, but today is not that day.

You probably already know that I am absolutely obsessed with color theory and painting color wheels. I recently learned about this unusual triad of opera pink, cobalt teal and Naples yellow. That’s fluorescent pink, the brightest teal, and a soft earthy yellow. So this new piece features those three, plus black and white to give a full range of values.

After painting the regions of flat color, I added highlights and shadow details to create the illusion of three dimensionality, like a tiling made of ceramic tiles, but it’s all gouache paint on cotton paper. What is interesting about that process is that the colors of highlights and shadows are specific to the color of the object. This means that I mixed lots of different colors to make the highlights and shadows convincing.

  4. Artist and illustrator Radhika Chitalia's father was an avid traveler, and years after his passing she added gouache paintings into his worn and much-used, expired passport. The project helped her cope with her own grief as she filled up the pages he never got to fill.

  5. #gouache on handmade paper (the gouache is by me. the paper isn't)

fun to do something that's more comfortable to me

  6. I adore vampires, so this is hopefully the first #vampire #painting of many to come. 🧛‍♀️

This is my second ever #gouache piece! I wanted to challenge myself to create something original, rather than doing a study from a royalty-free reference like I did before.

I used 6 references for different elements of the painting, the pose and dress were mostly from a photo I took of myself specifically for this piece.

I also decided to call her Brenda. I don’t know why, it doesn’t really matter. But that’s her name.

  7. A local friend is an aspiring painter. He's not on social media; advanced in years and with limited resources. I've been helping him out with a little website as best I can.

He's absurdly affordable, and would be absolutely stoked to paint a landscape from your original image!

If you want to support someone who could really use it, and get a painting out of it, check out his site: yourpaintedimages.com

  9. This is the result of following Ruth Wilshaw’s tutorial called “The Emerald Lagoon”. It’s a study of rocks; I learned how to paint rocks under and above water, and in the foreground and background. I also added some lichen that wasn’t in the tutorial because that big rock in the corner needed some decoration. I’ve learned that my filbert brushes are really useful for painting natural textures, like on moss and rocks.

It’s also a study of water, how it looks at different depths, and when things reflect off of it or are visible through it. I still have a lot to learn about that.

  10. Smart enough to build a functioning camera obscura, but too dumb to realise her ears are blocking the light and she won't see the solar eclipse. #TotallyNotMe

  11. This page is a study of far, medium and close nature scenes painted in gouache on 8” by 11.5” cotton paper. The bottom row are my versions of Ruth Wilshaw’s tutorials. Although she put hers in circles, I made mine whatever shape they turned out. Then on the top row, I tried to apply what I learned from the tutorials.

Things on the distance are hazy, lack details, and are nearly the color of the sky. Things that are up close are not just more detailed, but they show a full range of values from light to dark, and they have subtlety of hue variation depending upon if the light is reflecting off them or shining through them. On top right is a carnivorous plant called pinguicula that I painted from a collection of different photos. In both “close” paintings on the right, notice that the reflected light on the leaves is cool, but the light that flows though the leaves is warmer yellow.

We don’t typically see all three distances of a scene at once. When you’re looking at something up close, you don’t see the distance. When you’re looking at an expansive view, you don’t see the flowers right next to you. Of course, in art, anything is possible. #painting #gouache #landscape #botany

  12. Yellow Forest (2026).

Inks and gouache on paper. For Sale.

I wanted to explore the feeling of being completely alone on a planet. It's a feeling I got from the game Elite, an MMO which maps out the entire galaxy and you can actually fly to and land everywhere. The known parts of the galaxy are based on real astronomy data, the rest is generated. You can even travel to Sagittarius A, the black hole at the center of it, but it takes real life weeks. I never did it because apparently there are griefers hanging out there, that will kill you instantly when you arrive. It's a very cool game though, I've never felt so lonely in a game as being very far away from civilization on some distant world just discovering ancient Alien ruins and stuff like that. It's actually not a terrible feeling, but a quite cool one. You feel a bit special and chosen and stuff like that. It's the feeling I guess people who do science in antarctica will feel, but obviously I bet they feel it more intensely. Plus the sound in that game is excellent and will give Star Wars a run for its money.

This planet also feels lonely like that sometimes, and completely desolate and broken.

  13. Tiny gouache painting of a tulip.

Tried it with a water brush first, but I couldn’t get the correct paint consistency. I’ll either have to take proper brushes and a cup on the holiday or just take watercolour instead.

5x5cm sketchbook and my dried gouache.
