A version of this photo is what my father took with him to WWII. He left behind a photo of himself with a written promise on the back to marry her, if he survived. He didn't want to leave her as a war widow, so they waited.
He got shot through the leg right quick, and could have taken his discharge, but re-upped and ended up leading his (battalion?) men (4th Armored Division, US Army) through the #BattleOfTheBulge.
