North Carolina judges back Republican colleague in bid to toss votes and overturn election
More than 65,000 people in North Carolina who believed they were eligible to vote could have their ballots thrown out nearly five months after election day,
flipping the results of a supreme court election, a state appeals court ruled on Friday.
The 2-1 ruling from the North Carolina court of appeals came in response to Republicans’ months-long effort to overturn the results of the state supreme court election in November.
The Democrat Allison #Riggs, who currently sits on the court, defeated appellate judge Jefferson #Griffin, a Republican, by 734 votes.
After the election, Griffin filed a protest seeking to get around 60,000 votes thrown out.
Griffin currently sits on the North Carolina court of appeals – the body that issued Friday’s ruling. A panel of three of his colleagues heard the case.“To permit unlawful votes to be counted along with lawful ballots in contested elections effectively ‘disenfranchises’ those voters who cast legal ballots, at least where the counting of unlawful votes determines an election’s outcome,” Judges John Tyson and Fred Gore wrote for the majority.
In a statement, Riggs said: “We will be promptly appealing this deeply misinformed decision that threatens to disenfranchise more than 65,000 lawful voters and sets a dangerous precedent, allowing disappointed politicians to thwart the will of the people.”
The election is the only 2024 race still undecided.
The state board of elections previously rejected Griffin’s request and a superior court judge upheld their decision.
Friday’s ruling from the court of appeals overturned that ruling and ordered the state board to give challenged voters 15 days to prove their eligibility.

A 'cash crunch' forces Senate Republicans to abandon traditional ads
High ad rates and a Democratic cash advantage have the GOP scrambling
The National Republican Senatorial Committee has canceled all of its planned independent expenditures across the country
and will instead use the money to finance "#hybrid" #ads with its candidates, reports Politico's Ally Mutnick.The move, she explains is due to a "cash crunch" Republicans are facing thanks to superior fundraising by Democratic candidates.
Thanks to that deficit, the NRSC's shift has been underway for months.
Only the Senate races in Michigan and Nevada are still seeing traditional "#independent #expenditures"
from the committee, and these, too, will soon come to an end.Hybrid commercials, allow outside spenders to split the cost of advertising with the campaign they're boosting
-- and take advantage of federal rules requiring stations to charge lower rates to candidates rather than the higher rates third-party groups face.Party committees and super PACs can therefore get more bang for their buck,
especially in media markets where an influx of political ads has caused the cost of ad time to skyrocket.Unnamed Republicans tell Mutnick that one such market is #Missoula, Montana, where 🔸outside groups now need to pay an astonishing 25 times as much as a candidate would.
Those same sources also relay that,
had the NRSC continued to air ads against Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen in Nevada,
it would need to pay a rate 10 times greater than the one its nominee, Sam Brown, is getting.👉 There's a drawback, though. Hybrid ads are subject to more stringent content requirements than other commercials.
Most notably, such ads are required to reference a political party writ large,
as opposed to just a single candidate.These requirements, Mutnick notes, can make these spots "clunky and difficult to design."
That may not be much of a concern in ♦️red states like Montana or Ohio where a message broadly attacking Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party will likely be popular.
However, it can be more of an impediment in ♦️swing seats where the GOP candidates need to win over at least some voters open to backing Harris.
It's an especially serious obstacle in ♦️dark blue Maryland where Republican Larry Hogan is doing whatever he can to distance himself from Donald Trump and his allies.

A network of Republican megadonors has invited aides to both Donald J. Trump and Nikki Haley to make presentations at the group’s winter meeting next week, as the wealthy contributors assess the presidential race with just nine months until Election Day.
The network, known as the ♦️American Opportunity Alliance♦️, is expected to hear from Ms. Haley’s campaign manager, Betsy #Ankney, and Mr. Trump’s top adviser, Susie #Wiles, at the gathering in Palm Beach, Fla., according to two people familiar with the event.
The network was founded a decade ago by a group of wealthy donors, including members of the #Ricketts family, which owns the Chicago Cubs, and the investors Paul #Singer and Kenneth #Griffin.
But the donors in the American Opportunity Alliance do not move in unison, and people supporting Ms. Haley — and who had supported Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, who dropped out of the race last Sunday — are part of the network.
Some members of the group have been open about wanting a candidate other than Mr. Trump.Many of the donors are closely tied to the vestiges of the pre-Trump Republican Party and tried to stop his rise in 2016.
Trump also has repeatedly attacked major donors as being part of the “swamp” that he derides.
He issued such a threat this week on his social media platform, Truth Social, when he promised to ice out any donors who supported Ms. Haley going forward.Ms. Haley’s campaign said the reaction to that threat was the opposite of what Trump had intended, saying that she had a huge uptick in fund-raising in the 24 hours that followed.
This weekend, the political network established by the industrialist #Koch brothers, ♦️Americans for Prosperity♦️, is holding its own meeting.
The network supported Ms. Haley, but as The New York Times recently reported, some of its donors regretted that endorsement.
