In one sense, the existence of "far-right influences among Project 2025 applicants" might be the most obvious thing I've ever posted on social media.
On the other hand, the details are pretty interesting. For all the managerial ineptitude of the Trump administration, the continuity between it and leaders in both the intellectual and on-the-ground brawler contingents of far-right activism in the US is striking. Some of the people mentioned here cite Carl Schmitt (albeit in the most superficial way possible), use jargon like "Heritage Americans," and talk about a left-wing "all out war" on the right, thereby justifying all-out reciprocity.
Others point to the influence Jared Taylor has had on their thinking. Taylor (I like to call him "Nazi Thurston Howell," but that's just me) is best known as the leading figure behind the American Renaissance website and the annual white nationalist conference by the same name, but he has also been a spokesman for the Council of Conservative Citizens, in which capacity he helped inspire the 2015 white supremacist mass shooting in a Black church in Charleston, South Carolina, which left nine people dead. Taylor has also more recently been openly cavorting with members of Patriot Front as well as "active club" founder Rob Rundo.
This article doesn't delve too deeply into it, but it also hints at reaffirming antisemitism as a (maybe "the") major fault line within the US far right today. Several of the people mentioned here are at least very comfortable with some pretty deeply antisemitic ideas. However Taylor, for instance, says he opposes antisemitism and has been very open to the ideas and participation of far-right Jews in white nationalist spaces, and members of the Heritage Foundation have clearly taken a "philo-semitic" position in a variety of areas.
Anyways, like I said, nothing earth-shattering or all that surprising here, but I do think it's important to keep tabs on the details of just what kind of "leadership" we're all being subjected to. Worth reading.

It’s also important to zoom out and look at the big picture; everything the Trump administration has done was done under cover of some manufactured ‘emergency’.From the tariffs, to the concentration camps, to the rolling of the military on blue states, to the extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean; everything has been ‘authorized’ by some sort of ‘emergency’ powers.
Trump wants Canada, but to justify the annexation he needs to provoke some kind of ‘emergency’ to make that happen.

"This rising #Russian social #conservative movement frequently invokes the argument that #ProGay and #WomensRights groups are puppets of the West, which is seeking to undermine Russian autonomy and interfere in the country’s internal affairs. At an annual meeting of journalists and academics presided over by Vladimir #Putin in Valdai in September, the Russian president said that European countries had strayed from their roots by legalizing #GayMarriage. He urged Russians to embrace the conservative values of the #OrthodoxChurch and other traditional religions and issued a warning to those who might want to challenge those values. 'Russia’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity are unconditional—these are red lines no one is allowed to cross,' he declared.
"Several #LGBT rights groups have been targeted under another new law, which requires any nongovernmental organization that receives funding from other countries for political activities to register as a '#ForeignAgent.' Failure to do so can lead to investigations, legal action or crippling fines. The implication is that these groups are not only agents of the West but also out of touch with everyday Russians.
"The irony is that it is the new conservative vanguard—anti-gay, anti-abortion and pro–'#TraditionalFamily'—that has most successfully cultivated the West’s financial and institutional support. Referring to the anti-abortion bill passed in 2011, Lyubov Erofeeva, executive director of the Russian Association for Population and Development, a women’s advocacy group, said: 'It was 100 percent clear that everything was copied from the experience of American #fundamentalists and conservative circles of several European countries where #abortion is forbidden or restricted severely.'
"The church’s close ties with American evangelicals reflect a shift in policy. For much of the post-Soviet period, the Russian Orthodox Church held evangelical denominations at arm’s length, fearing that they would compete for influence within Russia. But as the church has consolidated its power, it has come to view the evangelical community as a partner. 'The #ROC realizes that the evangelical denominations are not their opponents but rather their allies in the relations between the church and the secular population,' says Olga Kazmina, a professor of ethnology at Moscow State University.
" 'It’s a re-envisioned paradigm,' says Father #LeonidKishkovsky, head of the Orthodox Church in America’s Department of External Affairs. In February 2011, the 47-year-old Alfeyev traveled to Washington, where he met with prominent evangelical and 'pro-family' leaders; and then to Dallas, where he addressed thousands of members of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church and emphasized the importance of 'creat[ing] new alliances,' especially around issues of marriage, abortion and the family. Alfeyev also visited the #DallasTheologicalSeminary and had an hour-long meeting with #GeorgeWBush.
"The trip to Dallas grew out of an increasingly close friendship between church leaders and a small circle of American and European Christian businessmen in Moscow. Alfeyev’s visit was organized by #JerryFullinwider, an #OilExecutive and elder of the #HighlandParkChurch who, until recently, had business interests in Russia. Fullinwider, a member of the #KochBrothers’ circle of major donors—those who have given more than $1 million to #Koch-related causes—met Alfeyev through his friend Bob Foresman, head of #Barclays Capital in Russia. This select group of businessmen has unusual access to Alfeyev. In an interview for this article, Fullinwider described having dinner at Alfeyev’s private residence on a recent trip to Moscow. 'He’s a real busy guy,' says Fullinwider. 'He’s very, very hard to get in touch with unless you have a special number and you know the main guy who handles him, who’s a good friend of mine.'
"Alfeyev’s first trip to the United States paved the way for others, and in October 2012 he delivered a lecture at Villanova University, where he received an honorary degree and paid a visit to the Milwaukee-based #LyndeAndHarryBradleyFoundation. One of the largest donor organizations of its kind in the United States, the #BradleyFoundation, with more than $600 million in assets, is known for its contributions to US conservative groups like the #HeritageFoundation and the #HeartlandInstitute. "House Republicans are now pondering whether to pursue another major legislative push involving #Medicaid later this year, just months after narrowly passing President Donald #Trump's massive tax and spending policy. But some are hesitant out of fear for how their constituents would react.
"Politico reported Wednesday that the Republican Study Committee (RSC) – which is made up of 189 Republican members of Congress — has invited a controversial figure to its Thursday meeting that suggests the GOP may make even steeper cuts to Medicaid this year or in early 2026. According to the outlet, #ParagonHealth Institute president #BrianBlase, who is credited as the architect of Republicans' Medicaid cuts in the #OneBigBeautifulBillAct, to this week's meeting.
"Blase's address to the RSC comes as Republicans plot whether to embark on another legislative crusade before the end of the year, even though the tax and spending bill almost failed to pass despite Republican majorities in both chambers of Congress. While no official details have emerged, Politico reported that Blase's invitation likely means that future Medicaid cuts could be on the table.
"Changes to Medicare may also be included in the conversation, as Blase will be accompanied by #DemetriousKouzoukas, who leads Paragon's Medicare Reform Initiative. " 'In the 15 years since, the Koch network has left a deep imprint on American society. Its advocacy is credited with helping stamp out Republican Party support for combating #ClimateChange, once an issue that drew bipartisan concern. The “full weight of the network” was thrown behind passing the 2017 #TrumpTaxCut, securing a windfall for the Kochs and their donors. And the upcoming Supreme Court term could bring the network a victory it has pursued for years: overturning a major legal precedent known as #Chevron.
"While most Americans aren’t familiar with the 1984 case Chevron v. #NRDC, it’s one of the Supreme Court’s most-cited decisions. Legal scholars sometimes mention it in the same breath as Brown v. Board of Education and Roe v. Wade. In essence, Chevron is about government agencies’ ability to issue regulations. After a law is enacted, it’s generally up to agencies across the government to make detailed rules putting it into effect. The Chevron decision said courts should be hesitant to second-guess the agencies’ determinations. In the years that followed, judges cited Chevron in upholding rules that protect endangered species, speed up the approval process for new cellphone towers and grant benefits to coal miners suffering from black lung.
"The Koch network has challenged Chevron in the courts and its lobbyists have pushed Congress to pass a law nullifying the decision. It has also provided millions of dollars in grants to law professors making the case to overturn it.
"The network’s position has become increasingly popular in recent years. Once broadly supported by academics and judges on the right, Chevron is now anathema to many in the conservative legal movement. And there’s no more prominent convert than Thomas.
"In 2005, Thomas wrote the majority opinion in a case that expanded Chevron’s protections for government agencies. Ten years later, he was openly questioning the doctrine. Then in 2020, Thomas renounced his own earlier decision, writing that he’d determined the doctrine is unconstitutional after all — a rare reversal for a justice with a reputation for being unmovable in his views.
"By last year, Koch network strategists sensed that victory could be at hand. During an internal briefing for network staff, Jorge Lima, a senior vice president at Americans for Prosperity, said the Supreme Court seemed primed to radically change its approach to the issue. The network was trying to find cases that could bring about major changes in the law, according to a video of the meeting obtained by the watchdog group Documented. “We’re doubling down on this strategy,” Lima told the crowd.
"Several months later, the Supreme Court announced it would take up a case, Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, in which Koch network staff attorneys represent the plaintiffs. If Thomas and his colleagues side with them this coming term, Chevron will be overturned once and for all."

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Ralph? Ralph, let me ask you. For the #progressive movement now, as it faces the return of Donald #Trump, what do you think are the next steps in terms of #resistance or reorganization that have to occur?
RALPH NADER: Well, it’s got to be focused on #Congress. The House is not yet resolved, but only Congress can stop the #Trumpsters. It isn’t just Trump. Trump is a figurehead. Trump is a bullhorn. It’s the Trumpsters. It’s the #HeritageFoundation. It’s [#Project2025]. It’s the takeover of departments that are dedicated to standing up for the people, the environmental protection bureau [#EPA], the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau [#CFPB], the #AutoSafety bureau [I'll bet Trump puts Elon in charge of that], the Federal Trade Commission [#FTC], the Justice Department. These are all going to be turned into virulent, vengeful or inactive governments. They want to destroy the civil service, bring it back to the spoils system. We’re in for huge turmoil. One can say that the election yesterday really elected #PresidentVance. Trump is not going to last. He’s going to disintegrate. And #Vance is in a position to become the next president.
So, what has to be done, Juan, is massive focus on Congress, which is the main constitutionally authorized lever to hold the executive branch #accountable, build for 2026. The Democrats will have far fewer people up for the Senate than the Republicans, unlike this year.
And they’ve got to stop blasting away at people who want to challenge the #DemocraticParty. The party says to everybody on their side, “You know how bad the Republicans are? You got nowhere to go.” They spent a lot of money attacking the #GreenParty, the tiny Green Party, instead of listening to William Barber, Reverend William Barber, who said, “Look, there’s 80 million people who aren’t going to vote. A lot of them are low-wage workers. If you get 15% of low-wage workers who aren’t voting to go to the polls, the Democrats would have won.” They didn’t listen to him. They didn’t listen to all the citizen groups who know how to talk to people, not just liberal patients or liberal workers, but conservative workers, conservative patients. Remember, a vast majority of this country wants to tax the undertaxed #wealthy and the #corporations. They want to break up the #BigBanks. And above all, in poll after poll, they say that corporations have too much control over their lives. Sherrod Brown pulled in his horns and lost. #BernieSanders campaigned on corporate power, and he won in a landslide in Vermont. And Harris refused to campaign with Bernie Sanders, but she campaigned in several states with #LizCheney of the criminal Cheney family and the invasion of #Iraq that killed over a million Iraqis.
So the blunders were endless. And it was basically turning her back on the progressive and the genuine populist constituency in this country. And Bernie, of course, supported Harris, but his positions were rejected constantly. He said, “Get the living wage up. Get universal healthcare up. Crack down on corporate crooks. Increase Social Security benefits that have been frozen for over 50 years. And get the taxation on the wealthy.” She ignored all that. Just throwaway lines.

Pildes, the NYU professor, said that while he was concerned about efforts to block certification at the local level,
he was confident that state courts could resolve any disputes by the time the electors meet.A new law, the 🔸Electoral Count Reform Act🔸, should provide a significant new layer of protection against election subversion.
The bipartisan bill passed Congress at the end of 2022.
The law makes it so that Trump and his allies cannot repeat what they did in 2020 and submit false slates of electors from key swing states.
Significantly, it says that the slate of electors submitted by a state’s executive is the legitimate slate and raises the threshold in both houses of Congress to object to the electoral result.
While the law controls what Congress must do once it receives certificates from electors,
it doesn’t have much to say about what must happen in the lead-up to the electoral college vote.🔥That could leave a lot of wriggle room for Trump and allies to try to slow down certification and go to court to try to force states to miss their certification deadline.
After Donald Trump nearly succeeded in overturning the 2020 election, ❓is the US better prepared to stop a similar effort in 2024?❓
Lawyers and other activists say they are ready, having spent the last four years studying and understanding the vulnerabilities that Trump and allies targeted in 2020.
Any effort to block certification is likely to be swiftly challenged in courts,
where Trump has already been unsuccessful dozens of times.The new Electoral Count Reform Act should offer additional safeguards should there be an effort such as there was in 2020 to get Congress to stop its certification of the vote
Yet it would be a mistake to dismiss the threat altogether.
The same pressure points that existed in 2020 exist in 2024,
and in some places election deniers have been elevated to positions of power.“This has started earlier in the cycle and is louder and is more consistent,” said Morales-Doyle of the Brennan Center.

Since 2020, there have been at least 20 instances in eight states of election officials refusing to certify election results.
The first red flag came in 2022, when county commissioners in 🔹Otero county, New Mexico, refused to certify the results of a primary election,
citing vague concerns about voting equipment.The secretary of state eventually went to court to force the commissioners to certify the election.
In July of this year, two Republicans on the county commission in 🔹Washoe county, Nevada
– a key county in a battleground state
– refused to certify its primary vote, setting off alarms.The commissioners who refused to certify eventually reversed themselves.
Nevada’s secretary of state, Cisco #Aguilar, has since asked the state supreme court to clarify that county commissioners have an obligation to certify votes.
Sometimes election officials who refuse to certify have pointed to mistakes that happened during the election, even though they did not affect the outcome.
In other cases, like Adams’s in Georgia, officials have refused to certify to protest about what they view as unfair laws.
While courts would probably force recalcitrant officials to certify the vote, significant damage could still be caused.
“You can force certification through legal mechanisms, [but] those events tend to be like rocket fuel for conspiracy theories and misinformation and undermining confidence in the election.
So there’s damage done even where certification is eventually forced,” said Berwick, the "Protect Democracy" lawyer.
The #timeline for certifying the vote is important because,
under federal law,
👉states must have an official election result by 11 December,
six days before the electoral college meets.💥Delaying certification efforts at the local level could put states at risk of missing that deadline.
“If we get past that deadline, it opens up a lot of questions, like tricky legal questions and room for shenanigans,” Berwick said.
