"Ableist Slurs"
What is a slur? What is an ableist slur? Is the consideration of a slur at the at the discretion of the speaker, the recipient or a third party?
Websters defines a slur as:
slur: [noun] an insulting or disparaging remark or innuendo : aspersion. a shaming or degrading effect : stain, stigma.Lizzo's song GRRRLZ, brought outrage by many for her use of the word "sp*z" in the opening stanza. After the outcry, Lizzo changed the lyric.
Weeks later, Beyonce’ also found public disapproval because of her song “Heated”, which contained a disparaging term about a form of cerebral palsy know as spastic diplegia. She also apologized and made the nessesary correction. It’s nice to see some people own, and make amends for their mistakes.
Last week I posted the following:
“Simply put:
Ableism is to disability, as Racism is to Race.
Slurs of any kind are unacceptable and have no place in society.”In regard to racial slurs but, considering ableism:
J. Alan HartSouthworth, a diversity and inclusion consultant in Potomac, Maryland: (said)
“The definition of a “racial slur” is rather vague. I would think that if anyone says anything that negatively impacts or speaks negatively about another group, (WHETHER OR NOT a “racial slur”) that it should not be tolerated.
Since there is not official list of “racial slurs,” it has to be based on interpretation by the people who can hear the word(s) – whether that is the ‘target’ group or bystanders. …but if it is defined as a ‘statement that is divisive, contentious, disruptive or in some way does harm,” ….
It is a slur, to finish this person’s statement myself.I have had many of the standard issue ableist slurs hurled at my soul countless times including: “freak", “nutjob", “fruitcake", "weirdo", “dumbass" and the far too common, and seeminly accepted word, “crazy".
A few unorthodox things I’ve been stabbed in the heart with include: being told by a former friend that he does "not want to hear what comes out of" my "twisted little brain", after I gave my opinion. Medical imagery actually shows my neck, spine and brain are slightly askew. How very thoughtful some friends are.
The most memorable (or hardest to forget) slur was, “F#¿&ing psychotic psycho b!#¿h". This one seemed to be a favorite of the neighbor that I did nothing to, except live next door, request to be left alone and apparently, continue to breathe.
Just last week, a thread was discussing how pleasant and interesting everyone on Mastodon is. One participant on c.im, a former teacher (according to the profile), commented how interesting people on Mastodon are and added:
“Interesting in a good way. Not the Ummm...He's Crazy, But I'm Going to Pretend I'm Polite”.
This person had another post complaining about a limited amount of “special education" teachers. “Special" is also considered an ableist term by many people living with invisible disabilities as well. Shaping young minds with archaic attitudes of ignorance, how wonderful. Needless to say, I did not find that conversation very interesting or pleasant.
So what do you think? Are words like “crazy" and “freak" a slur when used in a derogatory way and directed at persons with invisible disabilities? I asked 25 people with invisible disabilities today and all ageed, these are slurs. Should the government draft legislation regarding ableist slurs to include the disabled community, which makes up 26% of the US population? Who should decide what an ableist slur is… the masses, the government or the victims of this kind of hate speech?
What do I think? Try one on me or any disabled person within earshot and find out. Think before you use words that can wound. A consideration we can all learn from.

Looking good! 'Guerrilla Girls!, Ace Records’ much-anticipated first release of 2023, takes us on a thrilling ride from punk’s mid-70s origins, via the left-field post-punk groups, jangly female combos, grunge bands and vigilante Riot Grrrls of the 80s and 90s, to the she-punk bands of recent years – a five-decade alternative to the macho hegemony of rock.' Released 27/01/2023 on #Vinyl + #CD https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/product/various/guerrilla-girls-she-punks-and-beyond-1975-2016/vinyl-lp-exclusive-red-plus-x2 #Music #Punk #RiotGrrrls

An #intro! ok!
I am a grad student in the #DigitalHumanities and I work in media/tech, in #DesignSystems and #accessibility. I call myself a joy scholar.
I study promiscuously: #language #linguistics #lit #GameStudies #poetics #narratology #music #philo #FrenchStudies (moins de l'hexagone) #folklore #DigiPres #poetry #DigiCulture #vampires #pedagogy. I sing, run, write. I was an art model, shopgrrl, riot grrrl #zine editor. I ran a guest list at a night club. I don't like living small. 💜

Girls to the Front
Paradiso, Friday, June 26 at 08:30 PM GMT+2
New wave of homegrown female punk bandsGirls to the Front is an Utrecht based initiative which focuses on the Dutch based FLINTA representation within the punk music industry. It started as an event on the 8th of march in dB’s by Bibi Fay Bannink, an 18 year old feminist punk fan with a plan. Which grew out to a compilation vinyl with 14 FLINTA fronted punk bands, called Girls to the Front. Which was released on the 8th of march 2025 in EKKO, and was followed by a tour throughout the Netherlands. Including Paradiso, VERA Groningen, Rotown, Wilde Weide and Down the Rabbit Hole Dj-set. 2026 will bring another compilation vinyl, another tour and a continued fight.
Girls to the Front doesn’t only celebrate the various ‘punk’ sounds created by FLINTA people that are alive and loud in the country, but also wants to dive in the intersectional struggles and inspirations people experience through the making of zines or through organizing more interdisciplinary events with poetry, film talks and panels.
Girls to the Front hopes to work towards a community of FLINTA people who can mosh together without constantly having to be cautious of the male dominance in spaces like this and take inspiration from the Riot Grrrl movement with modern implications and struggles. Most importantly we want all the FLINTA people to the front and we want them to collectively scream en mosh together and celebrate their identities through punk as a genre, but also a lifestyle.
Last March, Girls to the Front, Vol. 2 saw the light of day.
Line-up:
Supermarkt - Experimental superpunk noise. Absurd, obscene, and senseless.
Clitteband - Screaming, stomping, messing around, pushing back, and broadening boundaries. Hillywood represent.
The Woman - punk in attitude, open in emotion, and radical in honesty. -

It maybe an unpleasant November out there - but what about some warm coziness from the inside?
I know something that may spark all that:
RADIO IRRTUM!
(on air from Berlin)
↓↓↓ Deutsch Version below unten ↓↓↓
Da next issue of #RadioIrrtum! will air this Saturday, 2025/11/22, 8:00pm UTC+1, Berlin time. At Alex Berlin FM at 91MHz / DAB+ K7D around #Berlin + worldwide at https://www.alex-berlin.de/radio-livestream .
Wuzit then?
#Radio Irrtum! is a German language #radioShow exploring the sonic vastness of the #underground. Emitted transmissions may raise attention for new unheard #music all over this planet's genre spectrum. Don't worry about that #GermanLanguage - it's all about the #music!
A lot of it - this time with a bit of focus on Spoken Words!
Covering stuff like
- lightweight musical poems
- voice heavy #organPoint Pop
- dreamy Bulgarian #Triphop
- a #Fediverse dream cooperation of #Bonkwave artists doing classic #DnB
- playful #indietronic
- #140 #Bass full of dancy-pancy energy
- #IBM (the term Radio-Irrtum! uses for Intellectual Bass Music) including Spoken Words
- Experimental #SpokenWords
- less #experimental SpokenWords
- dark Riot Grrrl #Postpunk
- dreamy #Downtempo #Lofi for making you smile
Lots of #CreativeCommons music is included and there are super cool artists from the Fediverse. Like @[email protected] + @[email protected] + @[email protected] + @[email protected] . Lots of strong women in music too. Lots wont be found on Spotify while it's all here!
Also (mostly for the German listeners I'm afraid) I will explain the organ point composition technique which is featured even in modern music (and without an organ if you are lucky).
And I will merge Johann Sebastian Bach's name into "Johannes Bach" by misstake at one point. I honestly know better! I can say this because the show is preproduced (and still I didn't catch this before uploading it to the radio station; this is bad!).
Anyway: If at least a bit interested in kewl new unusual #music, tune in! 📻
Got questions? I'll gladly answer! Just ask here!
Playlist + manuscript after the show also here.
CU all (?) on Saturday.

Self-Titled Summer | Joan Jett (1980, US)
Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 345 on The List, submitted by mfennvt. Here’s a quick rundown:
- Point of origin(s): In 1975, at the age of 16, Joan Jett played ukulele in an audition for rock producer Kim Fowley, who was looking to assemble “an all-girl answer to Grand Funk.” Jett was recruited as the guitarist for The Runaways, who would release their s/t debut the following year, and then three more studio albums over the next 2 years, the last two with Jett also on lead vocals. The group officially broke up in April 1979, at least in part due to the members each wanting to go in different directions, with Jett wanting to delve more into punk/glam rock. In the year that followed, Jett would work as producer for a few bands (including for the Germs’ debut/only album, (GI)), record this, her s/t solo debut, and start her own record label, Blackheart Records, with songwriter/producer Kenny Laguna. Rejected by 23 major US labels, Jett’s solo debut was released in May 1980 on her own label, reissued in January 1981 under the title of its opening track, Bad Reputation.
- Tasting notes: Punk rock, glam rock, kicking ass and taking names, Kat Stratford as an album, regret (because I missed seeing her live in my city last month :ablobcatcry:)
- Standout track: “Bad Reputation”, obvs; “You Don’t Own Me”
- Where are they now?: Immediately following this album, Jett and Laguna formed the Blackhearts, and Jett has since released 11 additional studio albums with 10 under “Joan Jett and the Blackhearts” (their first being the 1981 I Love Rock ‘n Roll). The group is still going, and last released Mindsets, an EP of new material in 2023. And, somewhere in there, Jett has: acted in a number of films and TV shows and on Broadway; signed and produced a number of bands; supported a number of causes, including releasing an album in 1995 with the surviving members of The Gits (Evil Stig) to raise money to investigate the murder of singer Mia Zapata (we’ll look at The Gits in a future spotlight); become known as the “Godmother of Punk”, “Original Riot Grrrl”, and “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll”; had a Barbie made of her; been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; etc. etc…. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are currently touring the US with Billy Idol, until end of September.

Why? What is this?
#Radio Irrtum! is a German language #radioShow exploring the sonic vastness of the #underground. Emitted transmissions may raise attention for new unheard #music all over this planets genre spectrum. Don't worry about that #GermanLanguage - it's about the #music!
This time completely with a rant about German public-sector broadcasters, their obsession with the AFD far right party, and its electors. And of course and most importantly — Music:
- FLiNTA: #Chorals
- dark #popMusic from #Mexico
- playful souly #HipHop
- distorted #DrillnBass
- #140Bass i.e. from #Peru
- #electro from #Denmark

All that, while running the new album from #AdrianSherwood in the back. Cuz' we can.
Some of the tracks played are released under the #CreativeCommons license, and some can NOT be found on #Sporify and the likes. Which actually is a good thing.

Mama Mega
von Ava Tabita Yul
Bearbeitung und Regie: Dunja Arnaszus
Komposition: Peta Devlin, Thomas Wenzel
Dramaturgie: Juliane Schmidt
Produktion: RBB 2025

Mama Mega
von Ava Tabita Yul
Bearbeitung und Regie: Dunja Arnaszus
Komposition: Peta Devlin, Thomas Wenzel
Dramaturgie: Juliane Schmidt
Produktion: RBB 2025

But musical stardom needs to compete with high school, the temper of a former Riot Grrrl mother, the morbid obsessions of a goth sister, and the eccentricities of bandmates that threaten to drive him and everyone around him insane.
The balance gets harder after a ritual during a party in Portland’s Forest Park causes him to wake up one day to discover that the creatures, witchcraft, and metal world he’s obsessed with may be a bit closer to home than he preferred.

Regie: Christiane Huber
Komposition: Enik (Dominik Schäfer)
Redaktion & Dramaturgie: Katja Huber
Produktion: BR 2025
So in etwa.
