NEATH: ‘Time really is against us’: Luca, three, and the £54,000 robotic walker his family are racing to buy
Luca Arnold took 3,000 steps in a day this August, strapped into a robotic walking frame at a clinic in Cross Hands. He is three, he cannot walk on his own, and his parents say he was healthier in the weeks afterwards than they had seen him in a long time.
Now the family from Neath want one of the machines at home, and they say time is against them. A Trexo costs about £54,000, it is not available on the NHS, the families raising for it say, and doctors have told Luca’s parents his condition is expected to start getting worse when he is between four and six.
The only child in Wales
Luca has a change in a gene called TUBA1A, which affects how the brain forms. It has left him with lissencephaly, a condition in which the surface of the brain is unusually smooth, along with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, severe epilepsy, impaired vision and a swallow that is not safe. He is non-verbal.
When he was diagnosed, his mum Annalee says, the genetics team told the family he was the only known case in Wales. Her own research puts the number of cases worldwide at somewhere between 350 and 600.
“Because it is so rare, there is no standard blueprint for his care,” she wrote on the family’s fundraising page, “and time is our greatest enemy.”
What the doctors have told them
Annalee and her husband Mark have chosen to be open about what they have been told. At diagnosis, she says, genetics put Luca’s life expectancy at potentially around ten years, “although they stressed that nobody can know exactly how long he will live”. More recently the family have been told he is expected to start deteriorating between the ages of four and six.
His epilepsy has already become more severe since he was two and a half, she says, and he has had hospital stays including time in a high dependency unit. As she wrote to us this week, he was back on antibiotics with a chest infection.
“This is why, now that Luca is three, we feel that time really is against us,” she said. “We want to give him every opportunity to be upright, active and as healthy as possible while we can.”
3,000 steps in Cross Hands
The Trexo is a pair of motorised legs that bolt onto a child’s walking frame and move the hips and knees through the motion of walking. Luca tried one during a five-day intensive at Equinox Physiotherapy in Cross Hands, the clinic that hosted the device’s UK launch in August, and S4C’s Heno filmed him in it.
Luca walking in the Trexo during his trial (Image: Arnold family)“During that time, he was able to be upright and supported in a way that made a noticeable difference to him,” Annalee said. “He was also much healthier during the period following the intensive, which has made us even more determined to raise the money for his own Trexo.”
Since then, she says, he has taken his first steps in a Rifton pacer at his weekly private physio, started playing alongside other children, and trialled an adapted tricycle the family also want to buy. A supplier’s quote she shared with us prices the trike at £3,828 before VAT.

He can now kick and move his legs more, hold a toy up high, play with his hair and try to lift himself up.
His paediatrician has stressed the importance of keeping his chest upright and positioning him well, Annalee says, and the family believe keeping him moving and supported could help his health and, they hope, his life. “For us, the Trexo is about much more than helping him walk,” she said.

Annalee and Mark have both given up work to care for Luca, who attends Ysgol Maes y Coed in Neath. The private physiotherapy and hydrotherapy they credit with keeping his lungs clearer has been paid for by the family, she says, with no other financial support.
Their GoFundMe was set up with an initial target of £9,000 and had raised £280 from eight donations by Tuesday. Luca is the third child in south west Wales in six weeks whose family is raising for a Trexo, after Teddy Gorman from Winch Wen last week; his family put the price at £49,999.
The fundraiser is at Qube in Briton Ferry on Sunday 27 September, from 1pm to 4pm, with face painting, sweets, music from Mad Jay DJ and Stitch appearing for photographs from 2pm. The bar is open and bucket donations are welcome. Donations can also be made at gofund.me/169b80661.

Why we need Disability Pride Month
In addition to Independence Day and all the birthdays we’re celebrating, July is Disability Pride Month. It even has its own flag.
You might wonder why we need another pride month when we already had one in June. (For some people, like my brother, the two pride months overlap.) There were a few incidents that showed me why disabled people need a pride month.
I recently went on a Costco run with my granddaughter, who has cerebral palsy. As we went down the aisles, a stranger came up to her and asked if she needed any help. She didn’t have her iPad with its TD Snap software at the time, so I told the person that she was fine and didn’t need help. He asked, “Are you sure?” I told him we were. When he left, my granddaughter shook her head in annoyance. A few steps further, an older woman told the person with her, “God bless that poor child.” My granddaughter looked up at me with a “what’s wrong with her?” expression. Those people may have thought they were well-meaning, but to my granddaughter, they came off as patronizing.
But this is nothing compared to the ableist abuse others are facing. One of the perpetrators is, of course, the Trump Administration.
Their latest move is to shift special education from the Department of Education to the Department of Health and Human Services, headed by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. (You know, the one who lamented that children with autism will “never hold a job.”) This raises concerns that the federal government will push to have people with disabilities institutionalized like they were before the 1960s. Such a move would be in line with the rest of the 60 years’ worth of civil rights progress the Administration has been rolling back. It also ties into their beliefs about white supremacy and eugenics. Let’s not forget that disabled people were the first to be exterminated by Germany in the 1930s.
This should alarm all of us. The disabled community is one that anyone can join. An accident, disease, chemical exposure, military combat, trauma, or simply age can make any of us disabled. In that situation, we would expect acceptance and support. So why should anyone consider denying it to anyone else?
Disability Pride, much like LGBTQ+ Pride, is about people being free to live their fullest as their authentic themselves. It’s not about denying anyone else their rights. In fact, protecting the rights of disabled people and making products and facilities more accessible benefits everyone. Accessible products are more useful. Ramps and sidewalk curbs help people with baby strollers and carts. Disabled people contribute to society as well. My son was a job coach and helped a number of autistic adults perform meaningful work. Those same ADA accommodations and support programs can help us get back to our jobs after a disability.
My granddaughter is thriving in public schools. She made the honor roll at her middle school, helped it win a unified soccer tournament, and made a number of friends. The strides made in the rights of disabled people enable her to achieve her goals and live a full and productive life. We must continue to fight to protect her rights, as well as restore and defend the freedoms stolen from other communities.
On the door to her room, she has a sign that says, “Cerebral palsy slows me down, but it ain’t stopping me!” People like her should be free to live to their highest potential—and that may include us when the time comes. That’s why we need Disability Pride Month.

The EleMenTs Series Is Complete: A Young Adult Fantasy Trilogy
Twenty years ago, I began imagining a story about three disabled teenage girls who discover they possess elemental powers. The idea stayed with me, growing and changing as I grew and changed, waiting for the right moment to be told. That moment has arrived. The EleMenTs Series is complete, and all three novels are now available.
Elle is Deaf. Meen is blind. Teena has cerebral palsy. Thrown together in a New York City group home as wards of the state, these three young women share something beyond their circumstances: the ability to command the elements themselves. Elle bends the wind through the same hands that shape American Sign Language. Meen controls fire and temperature, her blindness becoming a tactical advantage when she can feel heat signatures others cannot see. Teena moves the earth, feeling through stone and concrete the way she learned to feel every obstacle the world placed in her path.
Their names encode their identity. Take the right letters from Eleanor, Mingzhu, and Christina Sarah, and you spell EleMenTs. They are wind, fire, and earth. In the second book, Tal arrives to complete the quartet, a girl with autism who counts everything and trusts no one, until she discovers she can feel water the way the others feel their elements. Four girls. Four elements. And an organization called Prometheus Applied Sciences that will stop at nothing to acquire them.
Book One: Beneath the City
Beneath the City introduces the three protagonists as they meet in the group home and discover what they can do. In the tunnels beneath New York, they learn to trust each other and to understand that their disabilities were never weaknesses. The foster care system sees them as problems to be managed. Society sees their disabilities before their humanity. But something is watching them, and the tunnels hold secrets that will change everything.
Available now: Kindle Edition $3.99 | Paperback $14.99 | Free PDF
Book Two: The Invisible Hand
The Invisible Hand picks up three months after the tunnel. The girls have been practicing in secret, but they know they’re being watched. When a new volunteer named Sarah arrives at the group home asking too many questions, they realize Prometheus Applied Sciences has found them. Tal’s arrival changes the dynamics, completing the elemental set and forcing the girls to choose between hiding and fighting. When Prometheus springs its trap, staying hidden is no longer an option.
Available now: Kindle Edition $4.99 | Paperback $14.99 | Free PDF
Book Three: The Reckoning
The Reckoning takes the fight to Washington. One year later, the girls travel to the capital for a Senate hearing on a registration bill that would force everyone with abilities to identify themselves to the government. Vance, the agent who once hunted them, returns with evidence that exposes Verdant Agricultural Holdings as the shadow corporation behind Prometheus. Hundreds of people with abilities come forward publicly, refusing to hide any longer. Senator Morrison, who championed the registration bill, faces a choice between persecution and protection. The conclusion of the trilogy asks what it means to be seen, and whether visibility is liberation or the final vulnerability.
Available now: Kindle Edition $4.99 | Paperback $14.99 | Free PDF
Why This Story Matters
This is not a story about overcoming disability. I have no patience for narratives that treat disability as an obstacle to be conquered or a lesson for the able-bodied to learn from. The EleMenTs Series is about power that exists because of disability, not despite it. Elle’s Deafness shaped how she perceives vibration and movement; when wind became her element, she already knew how to feel the world in ways hearing people do not. Meen’s blindness gave her decades of practice reading her environment through non-visual means; fire and heat were extensions of senses she had already developed. Teena’s cerebral palsy taught her that the body does not always cooperate with intention; when earth became hers to command, she finally had a domain that responded to her will.
The villains in this story are not monsters or aliens. They are corporations and committees, systems and structures, the ordinary machinery of power that decides who counts as human and who counts as resource. Prometheus Applied Sciences wants to study and control people with abilities. The Senate wants to register and track them. The foster care system wants to manage them until they age out and become someone else’s problem. These are the antagonists because these are the forces that disabled people actually face. I wanted to write a fantasy that felt true.
The trilogy runs approximately 72,000 words across its three volumes. It is written for young adult readers but contains nothing that would embarrass an adult picking it up. The prose is direct, the action is consequential, and the characters are allowed to be angry, afraid, and occasionally wrong. I did not soften the story for a presumed audience. Young readers deserve the same respect as any other audience.
Read the Complete Series
All three books are available now in Kindle, paperback, and free PDF editions. You can explore the complete series at the EleMenTs Series page on BolesBooks.com, or begin with Beneath the City and follow the girls from the tunnels of New York to the halls of the Senate.
The EleMenTs have arrived. The world will have to deal with them.
