  1. A shaped interface starts with the meaning of the information.

What does the user need to understand? Which relationships matter? Is there a form that makes the concept recognizable before anyone reads the labels?

Much of interface design comes down to familiar parts such as input fields. A from-to field pairing, for example, appears in my bank’s app, in Uniswap, and in Uber.

  2. Does anyone know if there's a way to support relative units (1.5) or percent based (150%) line heights in @Figma variables?

  4. "Colour in particular gets created with marketing in mind where the objective is to grab attention. Bigger. Bolder. Better. But we all know if everything shouts, then nothing shouts. I know that colour adds emotion and gives users a way of remembering a brand. But it can also cause a lot of confusion, too. A wide range of colours shouldn’t be relied on to indicate meaning alone."

  5. Designer friends, do you like working with color scales (e.g. blue-1 through blue-10)?

They seem very neat and tidy but I get incredibly frustrated with them whenever I use them.

I think it's because they link saturation and value into a single variable. If I want a certain lightness I'm stuck with a connected saturation that may not feel right in context.

On side projects I generally just define some hues as variables. Then I define semantic variables using those hues but freestyling the saturation and value based on context. (Making sure to reuse these and not make too many.)

That's not as fancy but has worked better for me.

Am I missing something? Or do color scales kinda suck in practice?

  7. I'm hoping #GetFediHired helps me, a hands-on product designer and leader who knows the ropes and always stays curious, find my next full-time or fractional role (IC or player/coach).

I've built award-winning apps, great design systems, and assembled teams of really smart people. Also, I wrote a book on having hard conversations: "We Need to Talk" (Rosenfeld, 2025).

  10. A design system is meant to be the guardrail for the visual and interaction layer of a product, the cost of a weak design system isn't just inconsistency anymore, it's bad automation at scale. You should be constantly assessing whether it's accurate enough to be trusted, because something is now going to generate against it thousands of times a month.
