Along Louisiana’s disappearing coast, families are working to hold on to a way of life shaped by the water.

Commercial fishermen, tribal leaders, educators, and young families confront a future marked by economic uncertainty, land loss, and increasingly powerful storms. Yet even as the landscape changes around them, they continue to rebuild homes, revive traditions, and pass hard-earned knowledge from one generation to the next.

Filmed over two years in the bayous of southern Louisiana, On High Water: Holding Ground on a Vanishing Coast is the latest film from the award-winning team at Bertelsmann Foundation Documentaries. As communities around the world face the consequences of rising waters and the possibility of losing the land they call home, the film raises questions that reach far beyond the Louisiana coast. After the screening, we will speak with the director about the film and the communities at its heart.

Tomo Katsurada x Jonny Nash

Start your day with guitar music, sitting in a circle around Tomo Katsurada. During this morning programme, the Japanese musician gets up close and personal: feel free to bring your own cushion, find a spot on the floor and let the morning get off to a gentle start.

Katsurada now lives in Amsterdam and is best known as the founder and frontman of the psychedelic band Kikagaku Moyo. His music moves freely between folk, psychedelia and ambient, and has a meditative quality without ever coming to a complete standstill. Together with Jonny Nash, Katsurada is crafting a sound that is playful and spacious, with a strong focus on texture, repetition and subtle shifts in tone. At times soft and tranquil, at others slightly alienating, but always in motion.

On his recent album ‘At The Emerald Pool’, made with Jonny Nash, this approach is given free rein. The two musicians allow melodies and sounds to slowly intertwine, creating an open, almost weightless sound in which a lot is happening without it ever feeling cluttered. It’s exactly the sort of music to start the day quietly with, especially when the artist and the audience are literally sitting in the same circle.

Her music is characterised by warm folk-pop blended with captivating vocals, as heard in the track ‘Girls’, in which she shares a empowering vision of femininity. Her debut album ‘Wild Love’ is a powerful blend of guitar riffs, compelling melodies and a voice that immediately captures your attention. In her latest single ‘Headfirst’, she strikes a perfect balance between folk-pop warmth and an infectious rhythm. Wajda’s Legacy: documentaries from The Wajda School

Wajda School is one of Europe’s leading institutions for the development of emerging filmmakers. Founded in Warsaw in 2002 by Andrzej Wajda and Wojciech Marczewski, it offers project-based training that combines artistic mentorship with hands-on film production.

Rather than teaching the basics of filmmaking, the School supports directors, screenwriters, producers, and documentary filmmakers in developing their own projects under the guidance of acclaimed industry professionals. Through its close collaboration with Wajda Studio, many projects developed at the School have gone on to premiere and receive awards at major international film festivals, establishing Wajda School as a vital incubator for contemporary Polish cinema.

Maghreb Film Festival: The Ants

At the border between Morocco and Spain, near Melilla, the lives of three people become intertwined. Félicité, a young migrant from Cameroon, returns to Tangier after the tragic death of her friend, determined to earn enough money to give her a Christian burial. Hamid, a recruiter who makes a living exploiting migrant workers, sees his own carefully constructed world begin to fall apart. Meanwhile, Kenza, a wealthy young mother, hires Félicité as a nanny against her husband’s wishes, setting off tensions within her marriage.

Through these three interconnected stories, Fennane portrays a Morocco shaped by migration, economic inequality and social divisions. Rather than reducing migration to a story of borders and displacement, The Ants follows the people caught within these systems: their ambitions, compromises, prejudices and attempts to find a way forward.

With a restrained, socially grounded approach, Fennane brings together three very different perspectives on contemporary Morocco. The result is a film about migration and inequality, but also about dignity, human connection and the possibility of starting over.

Djamel is a young man searching for love in a working-class neighbourhood. His life takes an unexpected turn when he crosses paths with Si Rachid, a retired colonel carrying a hunting rifle. What begins as a seemingly ordinary encounter gradually opens the door to a much larger history.

The Algerian War, the war in Indochina and the violence of the so-called Black Decade all haunt the film, but Bouaziz never puts these historical events centre stage. Instead, they surface through conversations, situations and silences. The past seeps into everyday life, passed from one generation to the next as a trauma that refuses to disappear.

With humour and an understated touch, Poupiya explores how the wounds of history continue to shape the lives of those who inherit them.

Maghreb Film Festival: Take My Breath

Twenty-three-year-old Shams works as a seamstress and lives a quiet life, carefully keeping her intersex identity hidden from those around her. When her secret is exposed, the fragile balance of her life collapses. Caught between desire, love and the rigid expectations of her surroundings, Shams is forced to leave her home and seek refuge in Tunis.

With Take My Breath, Nada Mezni Hafaiedh explores the difficult tension between personal identity and the social norms imposed on the body. Shams’ journey becomes a story about the right to define yourself, even when the world around you refuses to accept anything that falls outside its familiar boundaries.

The film premiered at the Warsaw International Film Festival and went on to win awards at the Rotterdam Arab Film Festival and the International Oriental Film Festival of Geneva. It was also selected as Tunisia’s entry for the 2025 Academy Awards.

Detroit rapper Lelo continues his breakout run in 2026 with new music and a sold-out headline tour. His latest release, “Like Sunday,” follows “Dice Roll” and “Yoppenheimer (Remix)” with Joey Bada$$, building on the momentum of his double mixtape Mastiff / Pink Tiles. The two-disc project brings together his signature “New Detroit” sound and a more experimental side shaped by ghettotech and club music.

After making his Rolling Loud debut and performing alongside Don Toliver at Summerfest, Lelo completed a sold-out 15-city tour with a homecoming show at Detroit’s St. Andrew’s Hall. His sound, rooted in Detroit street rap while drawing from house and ’80s Detroit techno, has earned recognition from Billboard, Pitchfork, The FADER and Highsnobiety. With a new full-length project on the horizon, Lelo remains one of the Midwest’s most closely watched new voices.

CinéDialoog: Gardens of Fez

In deze historische Marokkaanse liggen de oude stadstuinen er verlaten bij. Aan de hand van de herinneringen van een onderwijzer, architect, tuinman en dichter ontvouwt zich een verhaal over de magie van deze eeuwenoude plekken.

De grote tuinen en rivieren die ooit het hart van de stad Fez vormden zijn bijna volledig verdwenen. Toch leven ze voort in verhalen, gedichten, rituelen en de herinneringen van de mensen die er wonen. Terwijl een architect de verborgen waterwegen van de stad blootlegt, probeert een onderwijzeres de verhalen over de tuinen door te geven aan haar leerlingen. Een dichter haalt een oud gedicht aan, een tuinman verzorgt een van de laatste groene plekken en een danseres brengt de geest van het water tot leven. Zo ontvouwt zich een portret van Fez als een stad op de grens van herinnering en verbeelding, waar het verleden nog altijd verweven is met het dagelijks leven.

Na de film gaan we in gesprek met de filmmaker over de bijzondere manier waarop ze dit onderwerp benadert.

Steebs Method

Steebs’ Method, a jazz-rap band straight from the Groningse bodem. Born from a deep drive for creative freedom and autonomy, Steebs’ Method blends boom bap beats with mystical jazz textures and philosophical, storytelling lyrics. Groningen based artist STEEBY (Jesse Kortenschijl) was inspired at a young age by the honesty and storytelling within hip-hop. In recent years he emerged as one of the leading voices in the Northern hip-hop scene, with releases like 'Alright' and 'Rat Race', sold out two shows at Simplon Poppodium, and played all throughout the country. 

Starting 2024, he joined forces with The Method, a jazz inspired hip-hop band consisting of up-and-coming musicians from the northern Netherlands and beyond. The band is known for their energetic live shows, featuring complex compositions, virtuosic solos and head-bobbing beats. The combination of the powerful yet vulnerable lyrics of Steeby and The Method’s raw creative energy ensure a unique and inspiring live experience for any music lover.

Marou & Massin

Marou & Massin from Purmerend have known each other since secondary school and have been making music together since 2017. The hip-hop duo’s style revolves around hard-hitting bars, ambiguous lyrics and exploring all facets of hip-hop. On ‘Greed’, they speak out about greed, propaganda and the role of the media. With ‘Geen Love’ and ‘Huismuziek’, they take a different approach, featuring Afro-trap and melodic hooks that showcase a more danceable side to their music.

Following gigs at Zwarte Cross, as the support act for Talib Kweli and a summer session at 101Barz, it’s clear that Marou & Massin are making great strides in the Dutch hip-hop scene. Now it’s time for the next step: their debut album is due out in November, and they’ll be performing it live for the first time with an energetic live show in our Upstairs Room.

How to be Human

In a world adrift, it is all too easy to shut ourselves off from everything that is happening around us is: from disasters, wars and humanitarian crises. How do we remain connected to the world around us, and to its history – not only intellectually, but emotionally as well?

Through stories varieying from the 1984 Bhopal disaster in India, the largest industrial disaster in history, to the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s, we explore the concept of restorative justice: the act of doing justice by active listening. What does it take to truly listen to, bear witness to and acknowledge the experiences of others?

The programme is inspired by the performance Nothing Bigger Than Humanity by Resonate Productions. Diverse voices from our collective past come together as testimony to global power dynamics. These forces can fracture even the most fundamental bonds between people, leaving us torn between profound love and deep fear. Can we find ways to remain connected, and in doing so contribute to restorative justice?

Throughout the evening, live music will accompany and shape the conversation.

CinéDialoog: Caméra d’Afrique

Aan de hand van de iconische documentaire Caméra d’Afrique gaan we in gesprek over films die zich ontrekken van de (neo)koloniale blik. Hoeveel ruimte is daar vandaag nog voor in de internationale festivalwereld?

Aan de hand van fragmenten uit belangrijke films, interviews met filmmakers en zeldzaam historisch beeldmateriaal blikt Ferid Boughedir in Caméra d’Afrique (1893) terug op de eerste twintig jaar van de nieuwe auteursfilm die vanaf de jaren zestig in Sub-Sahara-Afrika opkwam. Een periode die getuigt van een onvermoeibare drang tot zelfexpressie. Maar ook staat hij stil bij de bestaande productie- en exploitatiestructuren. Hij spreekt filmmakers als Med Hondo, Souleyman Cissé en Sembene Ousmane. Ongehinderd door een gebrek aan middelen en infrastructuur brachten deze pioniers van de Afrikaanse auteursfilm de werkelijkheid in al haar facetten in beeld, eindelijk gezien door Afrikaanse ogen.

Na de vertoning van Férid Boughedirs Caméra d’Afrique gaan we in gesprek over de huidige stand van zaken. We bespreken hoe filmmakers in de eerste decennia na de onafhankelijkheid vanuit hun eigen artistieke en culturele perspectief konden werken. Welke ruimte ontstond er toen Afrikaanse filmmakers niet langer hoefden te voldoen aan de verwachtingen van de koloniale blik? En in hoeverre bepalen Europese financiers, festivals, distributeurs en internationale verwachtingen vandaag nog steeds welke verhalen worden verteld?

Deze vertoning maakt deel uit van 60 jaar West-Afrikaanse cinema, een programma dat terugkijkt op de eerste decennia van de Afrikaanse filmgeschiedenis na de onafhankelijkheid, in samenwerking met Black Achievement Month.

Sven Cilliers

Sven Cilliers is a South African-born artist based in the Netherlands. His music blends contemporary pop with a nostalgic undertone, featuring warm, cinematic productions, strong melodies and personal stories about love, friendship, freedom and the search for a place that feels like home.

From the age of fifteen, Cilliers built up his audience in his own unique way: in the queues outside venues such as Paradiso and the Ziggo Dome. With his so-called ‘lineshows’, he turned waiting concert-goers into his first audience. These spontaneous performances subsequently found their way online to an ever-growing community.

He has since released a series of his own singles and has opened for acts at Paradiso on several occasions. In January, he returns, for the first time with his own headline show.

The first book on dubstep history, it's an oral history of the British electronic music genre’s origin story, as told through extensive interviews with 28 key artists and industry figures, and exclusive photography and visual ephemera from artists and photographers.

One thing has remained true for the past twenty years at Wende’s concerts and festival performances: anyone who has seen her live never forgets it. As a multidisciplinary pop artist, she moves effortlessly between music, theatre and dance. Since 2003, she has released eight albums and won Edisons in several categories. In recent years, Wende has been very much in the spotlight with her EPs ‘Vrijplaats’ (2024) and ‘Vrijplaats II’ (2025). Ever since his first tour of Japan in 1989, Benjamin Herman has been fascinated by Tokyo’s music scene. Samuel Welten

The 20-year-old singer Samuel Welten from Utrecht has made great strides in Dutch pop music in a short space of time. His number-one hit ‘Echte Liefde Is Te Koop’ has now racked up 65 million streams and was the most-streamed Dutch track of 2025 on Spotify. Welten has also enjoyed great success with ‘Alles Kan Kapot’, ‘Uitslover’ and his most recent single ‘BOEM!’, a collaboration with Russo. His rapid rise to fame has been recognised with, amongst other things, two Edisons, several Buma NL Awards, a Qmusic Live Award and a YouTube Award.

Following performances with his live band at Noorderslag, Paaspop and during the Liberation Festivals, Samuel Welten is ready for the next step: his first solo club tour, ‘Geef Mij De Kroon’. On 11 February, he will be performing with his live band in the Main Hall at Paradiso. With this, Welten is taking the energy from the festival marquee to the pop venue and demonstrating that Dutch pop-folk music is increasingly finding its place on the big stages.

In Color came into being during a snowstorm in Nashville. Holden Coltz, Matthew Hastings, Val Hoyt and Miles Laderman found themselves snowed in together for a few days and came to a fairly logical conclusion: they had to start a band. The four had been friends for years and had played in various bands separately, but had never made music together.

For a year, they kept In Color to themselves. They rehearsed, wrote songs and developed a sound that straddled alternative pop and rock, featuring grand choruses and plenty of guitar work. Influences such as Coldplay, Kings of Leon and U2 are audible, without the band clearly leaning in any one direction. In 2025, their debut single ‘Headlights’ was released, followed by tracks including ‘Jet Lag Mouth’ and ‘High’. That same year, In Color released their first EP, ‘Snow Day’, named after the weekend when it all began.

ENFF On Tour: Peacemaker

In 1991, Josip Reihl Kir, the Osijek police chief who fought tirelessly to prevent the Yugoslav war through dialogue and negotiation, was assassinated. The film pieces together his story through archival footage and the voices of those who witnessed his struggle for peace.

Peacemaker is a story about the last few months of Josip Reihl Kir’s life, in the dawn of the bloodthirsty Croatian-Serbian war, which Kir had been trying hard to prevent. Still today, after over 30 years, many elements of that assassination remain unclear and the possible contractors – still unknown. Filmmaker Ivan Ramljak is one of the most significant Croatian documentarians, renowned for his distinctive approach to historical issues.

After the film, we will discuss the role of pacifists, peace advocates and people in positions of leadership when a society becomes deeply polarized and tensions escalate.

De nieuwe generatie filmmakers richtte zich niet alleen op de urgente maatschappelijke en politieke thema’s waarmee Afrikaanse cinema vaak wordt geassocieerd, maar maakte ook lichte, humoristische en toegankelijke films over liefde, relaties, familie, ambitie en het dagelijks leven — thema’s die net zo goed de Amerikaanse en Franse cinema van die tijd kenmerkten.

We bespreken hoe filmmakers in de eerste decennia na de onafhankelijkheid vanuit hun eigen artistieke en culturele perspectief konden werken, vaak onder moeilijke omstandigheden maar met een sterke behoefte aan zelfexpressie. Welke ruimte ontstond er toen Afrikaanse filmmakers niet langer hoefden te voldoen aan de verwachtingen van de koloniale blik? Spike Fuck

For almost ten years, there has been more mystery than certainty surrounding the Australian artist Spike Fuck. In 2015, he emerged on Melbourne’s alternative music scene with ‘The Smackwave EP’, on which he explored themes such as drug use, gender identity, religion and existential doubt through melancholic pop-rock. His unexpected success took him from illegal warehouse parties to fashion shows and magazine features, but just as he was on the verge of a breakthrough, he suddenly disappeared.

Together with Amsterdam music platform we will go back to the early years of Sun Ra. Before the world (and the cosmos) came to know him as the Afrofuturist pioneer of "space jazz", he was born Herman Poole Blount in Birmingham, deep in the heart of Alabama. The Belgian documentary The Magic City - Birmingham According to Sun Ra sheds light on how this often-overlooked yet magical music city helped shape the enigmatic visionary in his formative years. Filmmakers Guillaume Maupin and Pablo Guarise closely involved the city and its residents in telling not just Sun Ra's story, but that of their community. Inevitably, that story is marked by a legacy of slavery, segregation, and racism. Yet Sun Ra's gaze remained fixed on a more harmonious future. As he says at the start of the film: "My story is not part of history. Because history repeats itself, but my story is endless."

Miles (2026)

Together with the Amsterdam music platform Steppin’ into Tomorrow we will watch a new documentary about jazz legend Miles Davis, who would have turned 100 this year. Numerous films have already been made about him, but director Patrick Savey is taking a different approach. MILES does not attempt to explain who Miles Davis was, but explores how he created. Through the stories of musicians who played with him – including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Marcus Miller, John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana – a picture emerges of a radical approach to his work: without fixed frameworks, without certainties, driven by risk and innovation. Miles did not provide answers. He created situations. The result is a mosaic-like documentary about creation in motion — and about an artist who, time and again, let go of the familiar to embrace the unknown.

Thee Marloes

Thee Marloes began in Surabaya, Indonesia, with guitarist Sinatrya Dharaka and drummer Tommy Satwick, who found common ground in hip-hop, soul and reggae. When singer and keyboardist Natassya Sianturi joined them, everything fell into place. Together they create soul music with smooth basslines, organ, guitar and plenty of space for Sianturi’s warm voice. She sings in Indonesian and English about love, loss and everything that doesn’t always fit into words.

On their 2024 debut album ‘Perak’, their love for classic soul came through clearly. That remains the foundation on the follow-up ‘Di Hotel Malibu’, but the trio now alternates between understated ballads and light-hearted, danceable tracks with greater ease. Their Indonesian background also comes through more distinctly. For instance, ‘Boru’ is sung entirely in Batak, a language from North Sumatra, whilst ‘Under the Silver Moon’ and ‘I’d Be Lost’ are clearly aimed at the dance floor. The album was created following two years in which Thee Marloes toured the world, yet remained close to where the band began: Surabaya.

Gallowstreet Kids Edition

On Sunday afternoon, January 24, 2027, Gallowstreet will be performing a special kids' show at Paradiso. As part of the club tour for their new album 'Futurebrass', releasing in mid-October, this Amsterdam brass band is bringing children and their parents into the world of brass instruments and synthesizers! If you play a brass instrument yourself, bring it along, as the members of Gallowstreet will host a short workshop after the show.

Gallowstreet has been a household name for over a decade. Known to many for their energetic brass arrangements, the Amsterdam band has long been a familiar face at Paradiso. On Sunday, January 24, they return to our Main Hall as part of their new project, Future Brass—a fresh, sound-driven approach that completely turns traditional brass music on its head. Instead of arranging existing tracks or adding effects to an instrument, their creative process starts with the sonic identity of a modern record. The goal is to capture the groove, texture, and impact of genres like hip-hop and electronic music live through brass. By writing as a band and thinking like a producer, the brass section serves as an essential element of the sound design rather than mere decoration. The result is a powerful live experience that seamlessly merges the physical energy of a brass band with the precision of contemporary studio productions.

AMN x wysiwyg: Can you hear the objects speak?

In recent years, the Dutch government has launched a series of critical inquiries into the ethics of restitution—addressing looted artifacts and even human remains held in the national collection. Moving beyond straightforward provenance tracing, these investigations have raised more fundamental, open-ended questions about value, ownership, and justice.

Derived from Beyond Provenance, a transnational collaboration between art collective Indeks from Bandung and screening platform wysiwyg from The Hague, this interdisciplinary film program, Can you hear the objects speak? by Asian Movie Night and wysiwyg, seeks to reclaim the living worlds of displaced heritage. Rather than focusing solely on material significance—a logic that often mirrored colonial frameworks of preservation—the program foregrounds the emotional, cultural, spiritual, and communal values these objects hold for the communities from which they were taken, as a gateway to understand the animist and relational cosmopraxis shared by many Indigenous nations in the present day Indonesia.

Through film, conversation, and performance, we will listen to the voices of ancestral beings held hostage in museums, mineral stones extracted for AI technology, as well as the ghostly presence in the streets of Amsterdam built by looted wealth. In doing so, it challenges the Western ontological impulse to turn living beings into static objects, and instead reawakens a sense of liveness, agency, and wisdom in the beings we connect with, thus learning different ways of relating—ways that may help us not only rethink restitution, but also reimagine worlds and futures beyond the crisis we are facing.

Van de Illias tot nu: verhalen van oorlog herzien

Terwijl de wereld zich in rap tempo herbewapend, ontmantelen we met theatergezelschap Zuidpool en de Ilias als startpunt de taal van oorlog. Waarom grijpen we telkens terug naar dezelfde verhalen om oorlog te begrijpen?

Al zo lang de mens verhalen vertelt, vertelt de mens verhalen over oorlog. De oertekst van de westerse literatuur is een oorlogsverhaal. De Ilias verhaalt over de Griekse strijd tegen Troje. Een epos dat als blauwdruk dient voor alle oorlogsverhalen erna.

Terwijl de wereld zich in rap tempo herbewapend, ontmantelen we met theatergroep Zuidpool en de Ilias als startpunt de taal van oorlog. De retoriek die Homerus beschreef, klinkt vandaag onverminderd door: in oorlogstaal die geweld normaliseert, in de framing van ‘onvermijdelijke’ conflicten, in de manier waarop wapens en veiligheid worden verkocht als vooruitgang. Waarom grijpen we telkens terug naar hetzelfde verhaal om oorlog te rechtvaardigen? Valt een wereld zonder oorlog überhaupt voor te stellen?

The Mary Wallopers breathe new life into Irish folk songs, without smoothing out the rough edges. The band from Dundalk began during the COVID-19 lockdown with live streams from the living room of brothers Charles and Andrew Handy. What started as a trio grew into a six-piece band, featuring banjo, accordion, tin whistle, uilleann pipes and drums. Traditional songs and protest tunes are given driving rhythms and loose harmonies, ensuring the music remains true to the Irish folk tradition whilst retaining the directness of punk.

The songs deal with working-class life, the housing crisis and resistance to exploitation. Humour and politics blend effortlessly: old Irish folk tunes are not treated as museum pieces, but as stories that still have something to say. On 18 September, their third album ‘Paddywhackery’ is released, recorded in two weeks with James Skelly of The Coral. On tracks such as ‘Landlord’s Demise’, ‘Crowns of England’ and ‘The Big Mixer’, The Mary Wallopers sound fuller and more powerful. At the same time, the core remains the same: using songs from the Irish tradition to say something about life today.
