More than 17,000 people were under evacuation orders in southern California on Tuesday as a wildfirethreatened suburban homes.
The wind-driven #Sandy fire was reported Monday in the hills above Simi Valley, about 30 miles (48km) north-west of Los Angeles.
By Tuesday morning, it had consumed more than 2 sq miles of dry brush and destroyed at least one home, according to the Ventura county fire department.
The flames were initially pushed by gusts that topped 30 mph (48 km/h), but firefighters were aided by calmer winds overnight, said department spokesperson Andrew Dowd.
“We’ve made a lot of progress against this fire with those improved weather conditions,” Dowd said. Crews hoped to make further progress before winds increased again, he said.About 750 firefighters had been assigned to the fire by Tuesday, along with helicopters and air tankers, according to the Ventura County Star.
The fire has destroyed at least one home.
The fire was 5% contained by midday on Tuesday. The cause is under investigation.
Evacuation orders and warnings were still in place for several neighborhoods in Simi Valley, a city of more than 125,000 people.

Ya he estado avanzando el sistema de aventuras para #Sandy, ahora me queda refinarlo un poco (por ejemplo, que una aventura pueda ser una secuencia de pasos a cumplir), y ponerle al juego algo de interfaz para poder gestionar objetivos e inventario.
Y a partir de ahí, a crear niveles, personajes, objetos y aventuras.

#Shaundelle #Brooks’s son, Akilah Dasilva, was one of four people killed in a mass shooting at a #Nashville Waffle House in 2018.Five years later, in 2023, another son, who survived the Waffle House shooting, was shot and injured while leaving a Nashville music venue.
After her son’s death, Brooks said she regularly would go to the statehouse to advocate for gun laws that she feels could have prevented the death of her son and so many others.
After years of her pleas falling on unreceptive ears, she decided to run for office.
“There was a time where people were scared to even mention it while they were running.
And I remember not voting for certain people because of that.
So I am grateful that people are standing up, speaking out and being brave about it,” Brooks said.
“Coming up here for seven years and having them just ignoring me,
testifying and then being told that if my son had a gun that would have saved his life,
showed me that I needed to do more than what I was doing.”The personal experiences of loss unite people like Brooks and Pearson with the scores of Americans who are part of what gun-violence victims and survivors describe as a club that no one wants to be a part of.
“When people see you’re personally impacted,
they feel that you’re more credible to talk about this kind of stuff.They know it’s not a political thing for us,” she said
