So, something else that is a key element of ensuring #HumanWelfare remains in the SW range is to make sure folks are fed -- without destroying the environment! That's where #RegenerativeAgriculture , #SustainableAgriculture, #FoodForests, #CommunityGardens, etc., come into play. But #Rewilding and restoring key natural systems are also very important!
7. #Wildlife faces #extinction cascades as #ecosystems collapse.
"Vertebrate populations have declined by an average of 69 percent since 1970, with some regions experiencing losses exceeding 90 percent as habitat destruction, climate change, #pollution, and direct #exploitation combine to trigger ecosystem-wide collapse that eliminates the #biodiversity necessary to maintain stable #FoodWebs. Species extinction rates now exceed background levels by 100 to 1,000 times, representing a mass extinction event comparable to the asteroid impact that eliminated the dinosaurs but compressed into a timeframe measured in decades rather than millennia.
"The collapse of insect populations threatens #pollination services essential for agricultural production, while marine ecosystems face #acidification, warming, and #overfishing that eliminate entire trophic levels and destabilize ocean food chains supporting billions of people. Domestic animals face parallel threats as #IndustrialAgriculture concentrates genetic diversity into vulnerable #monocultures while climate change disrupts feed production and increases disease pressure on livestock populations already stressed by intensive production methods designed to maximize short-term yields rather than long-term #resilience."

1/5 A new art book is ready. I don't know why I craft them nor how to explain what I do. It's an intuitive way of working with colours, textures, mixed media and collage, for seeing, touching, and more. A very #meditative work.
This one was the attempt to find something beautiful in our maize #monocultures that I detest.

The 5 biggest drivers for extinction are:
* destruction of habitats
* monocultures
* pollution (microplastic, pesticides, heavy metals, forever chemicals, ...)
* climate change
* invasive speciesIn other words the single biggest driver for extinction is capitalist extractivism and exploitation.
We clear forests to build roads, cultivate monocultures to feed our live stock, burn fossil fuels to power our consumerism and put our waste in the ocean. That destroys the ecosystem, species become extinct or seek refuge somewhere else and become invasive there.And with "we" I don't mean you or me - I mean the morbidly rich!
I'm not blaming anyone but the 1%. They are the ones that have everything and cause everything.There are a lot of solutions for this crisis, but we can't realize them without creating a system that prevents morbid abundance.
If the 99% decide to eat less meat, so we don't need so much land for our food - will that really save the rainforests or will it just free up more land for the rich to build more golf courses, factories and AI server farms?We need to talk about a wealth maximum, an income maximum and an interest maximum. Then we'll realize we don't need endless growth, we don't need exploitation of the 99% and the ecosystem, we won't need 3 full time jobs to 'make a living' and we won't need mindless consumption to numb ourselves in our spare time.

What the heck is “#CornSweat” and is it making the Midwest more dangerous?
It’s pretty much just as gross as it sounds.
"In one 2020 study, researchers from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics analyzed a past summer heat wave in the Midwest and found that cropland — most of which comprised corn in this part of the country — can increase moisture in the air above it by up to 40 percent."
by Benji Jones
Aug 29, 2024"Ah, yes, late August in the Midwest: a time for popsicles by the lake, a trip to the county fair, and, of course, extreme humidity made more miserable by … corn sweat.
"Corn sweat. It’s a thing! And people are talking about it.
The term refers to the moisture released by fields of corn during hot and sunny weather. Like all other plants, corn transpires — meaning, it sucks up water from the ground and expels it into the air as a way to stay cool and distribute nutrients. Moisture also enters the air when water in the soil evaporates. Together with transpiration, this process is called #evapotranspiration.
"So, where you find loads of plants packed tightly into one place, whether the Amazon rainforest or #Iowa, humidity can skyrocket during hot and especially sunny periods, making the air feel oppressive.
"That’s what happened this week: A late-summer #heatwave brought record and near-record temperatures to parts of the Midwest where there also happen to be vast fields of corn. With plenty of sunlight and temperatures in the high 90s, it was enough to make corn sweat, producing extremely uncomfortable weather.
"It’s not that corn sweats more than other plants — an acre releases less moisture on average than, say, a large oak tree — but the Midwest has a lot of corn in late August. In Iowa, for example, more than two-thirds of the area is farmland, and corn is the top crop (followed by #soybeans, which, by the way, also sweat)."
[...]
"Again, it’s not just crops across the #Midwest that release moisture, increase humidity, and make summers feel disgusting (I know firsthand; I grew up in Iowa). The millions of acres of #prairie that industrial farmland replaced — mostly to feed livestock and make ethanol — would have also produced loads of moisture, Basso said.
"But there are some key differences between native #ecosystems and #IndustrialFarmland, he added. '#NativePrairies are diverse ecosystems with a variety of plant species, each with different root depths and water needs, helping to create a balanced moisture cycle,' he told me. 'In contrast, corn and #soy #monocultures are uniform and can draw water from the soil more quickly.'"

While feral domesticated cats are a big problem in a lot of places (including NYC) and need vigorous #TNVR / #TNR or relocation, #WildFelines need to be protected!
In #Brazil, #conservationists try to save one of the world’s most #endangered #cats
by Sarah Brown on 13 June 2024
via @mongabay
"- #Muñoa’s #Pampas cat, a small wild feline, is endemic to the Pampas grasslands that sprawl over southern Brazil, #Uruguay and northeastern #Argentina.
"- With fewer than 100 individuals left in the wild, experts call Muñoa’s pampas cat one of the most endangered felines in the world and warn it go extinct within 10 years as its natural habitat is cleared for #cropland.
- #Conservation plans to save the species include switching from #monocultures to extensive ranching that preserves the natural #grasslands, creating a #captivebreeding program, and developing a trinational conservation agreement.
"- Recent #floods in the Brazilian state of #RioGrandeDoSul, where many Muñoa’s Pampas cat sightings have been recorded, have currently halted all local #conservation efforts, putting the future of this feline at risk."#EndangeredSpecies #SouthAmerica #ConservationEfforts #Biodiversity

"AMY GOODMAN: It’s one of the largest oil corporations in the world, #ADNOC, the #AbuDhabiNationalOilCorporation, #SultanAlJaber, who is the head of this COP.
"NNIMMO BASSEY: Yes. And, you know, we’ve heard so many things going on. And with the #FossilFuel industry being so prominent here, with bankers crawling the spaces of the COP, we’re seeing a lot of trade discussions. And, you know, this breaks my heart when I look at the way African negotiators or policymakers, the politicians, are bending back and accepting whatever is being thrown at them by the — through those who are investing in #CarbonOffsetting or #CarbonTrading mechanisms. We’re seeing a sellout of #AfricanContinent.
"And we know the implications for this. One, it means once you sell out a territory for a period of time, you’ve lost #sovereignty, so to speak, over that place, over that #forest, over that community, over that territory. And then it means negatively — negative impact on communities who live in the area that we are selling out. We’re talking about millions of hectares being mapped out to be sold for #CarbonCredit generative facilities. And, you know, some of this means #reforestation or forestation. It means clearing the land and planting new trees. Now, that itself emits, releases a lot of carbon from the soil. And then, of course, these #NewTrees are #monocultures, and they don’t — they are not as efficient #CarbonSinks as #NaturalForests. And so we’re seeing losses in every dimension."
