"The number of wild bee species in Europe at risk of extinction has more than doubled over the past decade, while the number of endangered butterfly species has almost doubled.
The jeopardy facing crucial pollinators was revealed by scientific studies for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list of threatened species, which found that at least 172 bee species out of 1,928 were at risk of extinction in Europe.
The number of butterflies threatened with extinction in Europe has increased from 37 to 65 since the last study, conducted 14 years ago. One species, the Madeiran large white (Pieris wollastoni) has now been declared extinct.
“Beyond their beauty and cultural significance, pollinators like bees and butterflies are lifelines for our health, our food systems and our economies – sustaining the fruits, vegetables and seeds that nourish us,” said Grethel Aguilar, the IUCN director general. “The latest European red list assessments reveal serious challenges, with threats mounting for butterflies and crucial wild bee species.”"

#Climatechange is not being addressed effectively, #speciesextinction is not seen as a problem, #war wreaks havoc on land and increases wasting of #energy; electric energy consumption increase is rising; sc #greenenergy does not work on a global scale, because the amount of materials needed does not exist; but even if, taking what's still there destroys even more of the habitat needed for human #survival.

The 5 biggest drivers for extinction are:
* destruction of habitats
* monocultures
* pollution (microplastic, pesticides, heavy metals, forever chemicals, ...)
* climate change
* invasive speciesIn other words the single biggest driver for extinction is capitalist extractivism and exploitation.
We clear forests to build roads, cultivate monocultures to feed our live stock, burn fossil fuels to power our consumerism and put our waste in the ocean. That destroys the ecosystem, species become extinct or seek refuge somewhere else and become invasive there.And with "we" I don't mean you or me - I mean the morbidly rich!
I'm not blaming anyone but the 1%. They are the ones that have everything and cause everything.There are a lot of solutions for this crisis, but we can't realize them without creating a system that prevents morbid abundance.
If the 99% decide to eat less meat, so we don't need so much land for our food - will that really save the rainforests or will it just free up more land for the rich to build more golf courses, factories and AI server farms?We need to talk about a wealth maximum, an income maximum and an interest maximum. Then we'll realize we don't need endless growth, we don't need exploitation of the 99% and the ecosystem, we won't need 3 full time jobs to 'make a living' and we won't need mindless consumption to numb ourselves in our spare time.

I’m beginning to get the distinct impression that leftists who care about the environment enough to do actually get off their ass and do something about it are a miniscule minority.
Most seem more interested in virtue signaling their love for humanity while we fill our nest so full of shit our children drown in a boiling vat of it.
And honestly, I think the IDPOL cancel culture just has a lot of people too scared to speak out for fear of being labeled an eco-fascist.
It’s crazy.
There won’t be any people to love in a decade or two if we don’t get our environmental shit together. And it is going to hit the marginalized groups the hardest, first.
We don’t have the luxury of choosing our battles anymore people. We ALL have to be #Class warriors. We ALL have to be #SocialJustice Warriors. And, we ALL have to be #EnvironmentalWarriors

Well my day turned out differently than I had planned (and I'm not talking about this morning's asymmetrical haircut).
I had some time so I responded to the Australian government's consultation on its #NaturePositiveLaws
I used the ACF tool list and links to enable me which in turn linked to the government's resources and survey (including an epic 1.5 hour long 'nature positive' webinar ... which I consumed at 1.5x speed but didn't complete).
If the government can pull this off, then I'm kind of positive. It will be interesting though whether the new laws will prevent all new coal and gas development due to their scope 3 emissions. Australia has to start caring about it's role as a world fossil fuel dealer. Just because we don't burn the fuel here, doesn't mean we are not responsible.
I then let the ACF know that I had responded, which in turn offered another email to let my local federal member know that I care.
Time for a beer.

@bicmay And you've highlighted a big issue - we are so used to so many small and insignificant behaviors, we fail to grasp the cumulative and system wide effects.
Yes, one person's single action has no observable effect and seems insignificant.
But that same action, regularly repeated by that individual AND also repeated by many others, has a much larger impact. To address the #ClimateCrisis and #Biodversity/ #SpeciesExtinction all of these small individual things matter.

That begs the question, why isn't agroecology the most common #farming system? The same reason why logging companies don't refer to the science of #ecology to sustain woodlands. Tree plantations are a short-term, get-rich-quick, industrial method that degrades ecosystems.
