  3. Archaeologists digging at the earliest farming settlements in Syria found buildings with no hearths, no beds: meeting halls, built almost as soon as people stopped moving. Farming needed shared governance before shared property.

Bali's subak has run rice irrigation since the 9th century, Valencia's water tribunal for 8 centuries.

Enclosure ended most of it, acre by acre. Proprietary #agtech is running the same process on farm data.

  31. Follow-up to my piece on the Monsanto playbook.

Most common response in the comments: "Nobody forced farmers to use the products. Farmer's choice."

Yes, the contract was signed freely. In the same way, nobody forced anyone to sign a subprime mortgage in 2006. The system that made the alternative impossible was built deliberately.

    New piece covers:

The agricultural treadmill (Cochrane, 1958): early adopters gain a temporary cost advantage; commodity prices fall as adoption spreads; the advantage disappears; and survivors consolidate. Rinse, repeat. The consistent winner in this dynamic is the technology vendor.

The risk transfer: when the system fails, the input companies still profit. The banks still collect. The downside concentrates where the power doesn't.

And the third squeeze: the precision ag platform that owns your field data when you leave.

  37. I try to avoid LinkedIn unless I have to go there. But an AgTech investment post celebrating the "Monsanto playbook" as a model to replicate got under my nose badly enough that I had to write about it.

Nobody who knows my work would call me anti-tech. But there's a hard line between technology that increases farmer capability and technology that engineers farmer dependency. The Monsanto playbook is the second kind.

The playbook: own the genetics, bundle the chemicals, capture the data, engineer the debt. Charge the farmer for all of it. Call it innovation.

Also in there: corporate capture of agricultural knowledge, India's farmer suicide crisis, Dark Emu and native grass seeds, and why a loaf of bread can be a political act.

Tech4Good means the farmer gets more capable. Not more dependent.

  51. The root problem is accounting. You cannot compensate for what the ledger does not record.

We are building that ledger: ecological events — soil carbon, pollination, water quality, biodiversity — in the same data structure as farm economics. Open standards. Auditable. Portable.

Not because better software fixes the politics. But because once the data exists, the question gets harder to avoid.
