Interesting perspective. As much as I like the #EuroOffice attempt with a fork of #ONLYOFFICE, it looks like OnlyOffice does have a point here.

You can't selectively chose to ignore/drop any conditions under a copyleft #OpenSource licence (in this case the #AGPLv3).

I guess the Euro-Office initiative is in a bit of a pickle, here.

This is also the first thing I’ve released under the #AGPLv3. Every other #foss project of mine has been MIT or BSD licensed, but the older I get, and the worse the tech industry becomes, the more I think Stallman was right all along.

Today's next interesting iteration in #LLM shenanigans:
Below #FOSS and #claudecode extension project is licensed as #AGPLv3 which, given what it claims to be, appears more than reasonable to me. It also has a commercial license available. So nothing new here.
However, here's the fun part from the ReadMe: "No Closed-Source Usage: You cannot use this software in proprietary/closed-source projects without open-sourcing your entire project under AGPL-3.0."

Do we now argue that this is more of an #IDE or more of your #bison/flex style code generator, just without the common generator exception.

In a more extended round of arguments:

There is a now a growing FOSS scene around shared context (skills, agents, prompts, ...) components for your least distrusted coding LLM.
They are combined with the human instruction ("derivative work" has entered the chat) and turned into code by the LLM.
The FOSS components partially contain code snippets as examples of what to generate. At times similar but not identical or clearly derived variations of them end up in the output.
The Nov25 case around German #GEMA vs #OpenAI on song texts comes to mind here too.
Also, I'd argue that this is likely to have substantial future impact and probably will end up being enforced in a few cases here or there.

Now what do we make of this? I would err more towards a) it's enforceable b) 🍿

@UlrikeHahn As @Chip_Unicorn says, Element = frontend. Org = New Vector Ltd. In terms of ethics (vs #TyrannyOfConvenience) the main Matrix software is #AGPLv3 [1]; the protocol is open [2]; self-hosting is legal and ethical [3].

As @lavaeolus says, security tends to oppose convenience: there's a learning curve for E2EE.

There is no mention of such on the webpage, and when I tried accessing the terms of the service, it redirected to a googl-hosted page and information wouldn't display without enabling javascript, which i refuse as a matter of principle. Any license experts want to weigh in from a legal and moral perspective?

I want to be as close to Misskey compatible as I can with my database; the Misskey project has the actual SQL commands for initializing the database in the Misskey repo (seen here: https://github.com/misskey-dev/misskey/blob/develop/packages/backend/migration/1000000000000-Init.js and in other files).

If possible, I would like to use their SQL commands. Normally when I use other people's code, I try and fork to maintain history; however, in this case, I just want the queries. I also won't be hosting on GitHub.

Would it be appropriate for me to copy/paste the queries into my own file, mark the location where they're coming from to give credit (and include the original copyright, of course), then license (at least) that file as AGPL? Would I need to license the whole project as AGPL? I'm not opposed to that; I just want to make sure I'm as transparent as possible about where these queries and code are coming from.

(For the record, the plan is to embed them into Rust functions because I don't want to load SQL queries from arbitrary text files; that is, all the SQL I want to be run will be internal).

@landley The sad part is that you are in fact correct.

The only thing #Copyleft like #GPLv3, #AGPLv3 and espechally #AssholeLicensing of the #SSPL, #RHEL and #grsecurity kind can do is commit #AssetDenial and even that is flaky as one can only put actual #code under a license and not an implementation of something like a #Codec...

...But those are usually covered by #patents and other legalese trolling efforts, like the way #MELP / #MELPe is licensed so everyone who doesn't want to exclusively make a radio for NATO / U.S. DoD has to arrange a licensing deal woth half a dozen tech giants, so #Codec2 had to be made...

:matrix: So the dev teams of two major #Matrix homeservers, #Synapse and #Dendrite, have announced that they will fork their work to change from the non-reciprocal #Apache license to the reciprocal #AGPLv3. That is a good step in the right direction. #Copyleft is the only effective way to ensure software public goods remain open.

However the effect is not much change yet, because they will require a #CLA for contributions to be merged. Revert to a #DCO would ensure future protection.
