  1. MarineTraffic has lighthouses and big rocks as well as ships and boats, but I can't find the flock of wind turbines I saw from Clare last month - they should be off the coast of Galway, I think
Oh, wait, no, they're onshore, so they wouldn't be recorded.

  6. New Bladeless Wind Turbine Generates Clean, Quiet, Bird Safe Power

Vortex Bladeless Across the world, wind power is growing fast but not fast enough. To meet climate goals and reach carbon neutrality, the United Nations says global wind energy must triple in the next ten years. 11. #Windturbines are getting so loud that some #birds are being forced to sing louder just to be heard

In Poland, normally quiet mornings are being broken by a strange, modern hum. In the air, birds are responding bizarrely, changing their natural behavior.

The songs are getting louder. The choruses are changing. And tunes sung for generations are disappearing.

  12. Switching off wind turbines cost Britain €1.6bn this year. Here’s why.

Wind is now one of the world’s biggest electricity sources and wind power has surged across Europe, sparking concern that billions are being wasted due to “insufficient” grid investment.

  14. Bills revive debate over #SearsIsland port plan

Maine Public | By Peter McGuire
    Published March 12, 2025

"Lawmakers heard more than five hours of testimony Wednesday from both sides of a debate over preserving Sears Island in the Town of #Searsport.

"A pair of bills from state representative Reagan Paul would extend a #ConservationEasement across the island and restore #SandDuneProtections in a 330-acre parcel set aside for development.

"The Winterport Republican said it's time to end decades of controversial port proposals for the island in the town of Searsport. The latest plan is a floating offshore wind port by the Maine Department of Transportation that has so far failed to attract federal funding.

"'And yet #MDOT refuses to face reality, doubling down on failure and proving this is not about offshore wind, it is about pushing #IndustrialDevelopment at any cost,' Paul told members of the legislature's Environment and Natural Resources Committee.

"Local #conservationists support the proposal and said the highest and best use of the island is as a wild area. Any commercial development, including the wind port, can be done at nearby #MackPoint, a fuel and materials terminal."

  15. Good! Build it on #MackPoint, not #SearsIsland! Feds reject Maine’s request for $456 million to build proposed wind port at Sears Island

    by Stephen Singer
    October 22, 2024

"Rolf Olsen, vice president of the board of #FriendsOfSearsIsland, which manages a portion of the island set aside for #conservation, and an opponent of the Sears Island proposed site, said the federal decision 'would appear to be a significant financial blow' to develop the manufacturing facility.

"'We’re somewhat encouraged that the state’s port development grant application was turned down, especially since it only considered developing Sears Island and not Mack Point,' he said.

  16. #SearsIsland: The Answer to Green Energy, Or Home to #Biodiverse #Wildlife?

    by Freyja Grey
    Jul 16, 2024

"The #Wabanaki people indigenous to the area named Sears Island #Wassumkeag, or Shining Beach. The tribes used the island to hunt and fish for centuries.

"McCarthy said, 'They've been documented archeologically to have had a presence here for at least thirty-five hundred years.... There's a bio-regional perspective that considers all the relations: the #insects, the #grasses, the #trees, the #eelgrass, the #birds, the critters that roam these woods — if you really want to speak for Sears Island, it's incumbent, not just for poets and photographers and old hippies, it's incumbent for all of us to be mindful of all that is happening here.'

"McCarthy said he gets why the island is an attractive place for development. 'We're in a time where wind energy is important,' he said. 'We need to find green sources of power, but the narrowness of that human perspective needs to be challenged.'

"Both McCarthy and Lawless join the group #FriendsOfSearsIsland in maintaining that #MackPoint is better situated for development.

"Even though 600 acres of the island are protected by a conservation easement, industrial disruption to the peaceful island could lead to #environmental impacts that may not be fully realized until after development, according to McCarthy."

Public feedback process for decision on #OffshoreWind port a charade, #environmentalists claim

State officials are accused of long favoring #SearsIsland, the largest undeveloped island in #PenobscotBay, as the future site of the port.

Author: Kate Cough of The Maine Monitor
    Published: 12:51 PM EDT August 14, 2023

PORTLAND, Maine — "Environmentalists are decrying a year-long process meant to gather public feedback on where to build a #deepwater offshore wind port, calling it a 'charade.'

"They say state officials failed to adequately engage the public or #tribal communities and effectively decided where to construct the port long before the process began.

"The Maine Department of Transportation [#MDOT]has been making an internal case for Sears Island while 'giving an illusion of an impartial analysis of port possibilities to the public,' said #MattCannon, the state conservation and energy director for #SierraClubMaine, in comments at the final meeting of the Offshore Wind Port Advisory Group.

"'Some,' he said, 'see it as a breach of public trust.'

"State officials have said they’re considering several locations for the 100-acre port, including #Eastport, #MackPoint and Sears Island, and don’t expect to choose a final location until next year. The officials insist they have not made a final decision.

"But participants in the process, which began in May 2022, say the state has long advocated for Sears Island, the largest #undeveloped island in Penobscot Bay.

"They believe officials have not seriously considered other options for the port, which would be the staging area for equipment needed to build and maintain #Windturbines in federal waters in the #GulfOfMaine.

"Those suspicions hardened after documents released via a public records request submitted by #IslesboroIslandsTrust earlier this year revealed internal discussions seeming to indicate an official preference for the island. #FriendsOfSearsIsland manages the #trails on the conserved portion of the island.

"The documents included a '#Stakeholder Management Plan' written by state-hired consultant Kay Rand. The document said the goals were, in part, to 'develop and execute a stakeholder outreach strategy that would enable #GovernorJanetMills to … announce a commitment to pursue development of Sears Island as the #RenewableEnergy Port of the Northeast.'

"The document is dated Sept. 8, 2021 — eight months before the stakeholder group held its first meeting — and mentions pursuing Sears Island as the port at least four times."

  19. #Sami activist sets up camp outside #Norway parliament to protest #WindTurbines

    By Gwladys Fouche

    September 11, 2023

OSLO, Sept 11 (Reuters) - “An Indigenous Sami activist set up camp outside the Norwegian parliament on Monday to protest against wind turbines built on land traditionally used by Sami #reindeer herders, saying he will stay there as long as the turbines remain in place.

“Norway's supreme court in October 2021 ruled that two wind farms built at Fosen in central Norway, part of Europe's largest onshore wind farm, violated Sami rights under international conventions. But the turbines remain in operation today.

“The Fosen case is one of many conflicts that Norway has yet to resolve, with #ClimateChange and technology enabling #MineralExtraction, #EnergyProduction and #tourism while also threatening #TraditionalWays of life.

“The government has said that the supreme court, while ruling that the licenses of the two farms were illegal, did not give instructions on what to do next and that the conflict should be resolved through talks.

“‘It has been 700 days of human rights abuse and the Norwegian state has not done anything to stop it. So I have chosen to come here and set up camp until the human rights abuse stops,' Sami activist #MihkkalHaetta, 22, told Reuters, dressed in a traditional gakti outfit worn inside out as a sign of protest.

“‘I believe that there is only one solution and that is to tear down the wind turbines at Fosen.'

“In February #IndigenousProtesters including Haetta occupied the lobby of the #oil and energy ministry before police removed them.

“They later occupied the entrances of 10 ministries and were joined by #Greta Thunberg, who said #HumanRights had to go hand-in-hand with #ClimateProtection and #ClimateAction.

“Since the protests, the government and the reindeer-herding families affected by the #FosenWindFarm have been involved in mediation to resolve the conflict but no concrete measures have been announced yet.

“The reindeer herders have said the only solution to the conflict is that the turbines be torn down.

'We still hope that the mediation process will be able to lead to an amicable solution to the matter. It would be the best for all parties,' Oil and Energy Minister Terje Aasland told Reuters in an emailed statement.

“’It is too early to say anything concrete about when a solution might be in place, but I am focused that the mediation track can be followed as long as there is hope for a solution.'

“About Monday's protest, Aasland said 'the right to free expression is a founding democratic right I have great respect for’.”

  20. The scaremongering about offshore #windturbines continues.
Since this article talks about the turbines planned for the coast of #Wicklow "towering over the coastline", it's worthwhile to get some perspective (literally).
The visual angle (apparent height) of these things (300m tall, 12km away) is around the same as an average person standing at the far end of a soccer pitch.
