  3. @snowpheonix Ahh yes, The covenant (בְּרִית, berit) is with כָּל־בָּשָׂר (kol-basar)—"all flesh," every living being. Universal, pre-Israelite, pre-Sinai. It obligates God, demands nothing of humanity, and excludes no one. Sadly it is Dominionists who weaponize the covenant for supersessionist conquest, when sadly they can't even read the grammatical direction of the bow.

  17. @Tamasg @mckensie Maybe I am too naive, but in a perfect world, we should already get going an #openSource #linguistic project to document phonemes for every language on earth in human readable and also computer readable language. That extensible library then can be adapted to any TTS we are building. Our worry will be then in tuning the voice and way of emphasizing certain words and phrases.

  21. Today's #linguistic excursion is brought to you by Asianometry's video on the 45nm lithography process: The chinese idiom

    亂七八糟 (luànqībāzāo)

    - literally: unrest, 7, 8, another kind of unrest
    - translated as "everything in disorder", or with the english idiom "at sixes and sevens"

The historic speakers of chinese and english had sort of the same idea here, but ended up with slightly different numbers!

  23. Hype for the Future 94B: Syllables Required to Pronounce Letters in the English Language

Disclaimer While the American English pronunciation of the letter Z is “zee” and the Commonwealth pronunciation is “zed,” either name can be pronounced in the same number of syllables. Therefore, the syllable counts should remain consistent across distinct varieties of the global language. Introduction While many letters can be pronounced in one or a few syllables, words containing such letters could also be pronounced in fewer syllables than the letters themselves in select […]

  28. I've noticed a #linguistic oddity that bugs me, mostly since I'm seeing it in ads, not hearing it used by real people.

In my dialect, "shop" can be a noun, a place where you can buy things. It can also be an intransitive verb, i.e. one that takes no direct object.

    "What are you doing?" "Shopping"

If you want to buy a particular thing, you're shopping FOR it, not shopping it, because shop doesn't take a direct object.

But I'm seeing ads urging me to "shop" various products. Incoherent.

  30. Our new bibliometric study reveals how a tiny typographic error, confusing the German Eszett (ß) with the Greek beta (β), has created hundreds of false positives like ß-catenin and ß-glucuronidase in major databases:

    :doi: doi.org/10.1108/JD-08-2025-0222

Even leading journals weren’t immune. The paper highlights how small linguistic mistakes can undermine metadata quality and scientific search precision.
