Bronnen
De brand van de HindenburgIk nodigde u onlangs uit om vragen te stellen in mijn reeks “vragen rond de jaarwisseling” en ik heb de vier blogjes met antwoorden inmiddels geschreven. Morgen de eerste aflevering. Eén vraag was echter meer complex. Ze betrof de bronnen en het antwoord vergde een apart stukje, dus bij dezen.
Kan je nog eens de definities herhalen/bevestigen van een primaire en een secundaire bron?
Een primaire bron is een tekst die rechtstreeks verslag doet van een gebeurtenis. Denk aan de notulen van een vergadering of een staatsverdrag, maar ook aan een ooggetuigenverslag – en dat kan een brief zijn, een foto, een krantenartikel, een inscriptie of een filmpje van een brandende zeppelin. Doorgaans vindt de historicus primaire bronnen in archieven of in een bronnenuitgave; voor Romeinse inscripties is er bijvoorbeeld de EDCS.
Een secundaire bron is op te vatten als een narratief, gebaseerd op primaire bronnen. Dat kan een biografie zijn, of een monografie over een klein onderwerp of een synthese. Als een secundaire bron conflicteert met een primaire bron, is er meestal iets niet in de haak.
Voor de oudheidkundige is dit onderscheid overigens wat lastig. Er zijn antieke secundaire bronnen, maar die zijn minimaal ten dele gebaseerd op geruchten en andere mondelinge informatie, terwijl we niet kunnen controleren welke primaire bronnen zijn gebruikt, zo dat überhaupt al het geval is. Maar deze secundaire bronnen vormen dus de basis van onze eigen geschiedschrijving over de Oudheid – die we dus eigenlijk tertiair zouden moeten noemen.
Zijn er namen voor bronnen waarvan het origineel fysiek bewaard is gebleven en bronnen die we alleen indirect kennen?
In de eerste categorie vallen (voor de oudheidkundige) de papyri, de kleitabletten en inscripties, waarbij ik aanteken dat de naam “papyri” ook wordt gebruikt voor teksten op perkament of leer. Een echte verzamelnaam voor authentieke teksten ken ik niet. Literaire teksten die we alleen indirect kennen, kunnen worden aangeduid als kopieën.
Maar gekopieerde literaire teksten kunnen natuurlijk ook weer verwijzen naar eerdere, indirect gekende teksten: nogal wat secundaire bronnen zijn alleen bekend als middeleeuwse kopie en citeren primaire bronnen. De moderne lezer zit dus met een internetuitgave van een moderne tekstuitgave van een gereconstrueerde tekst, gebaseerd op middeleeuwse kopieën van een antieke secundaire bron die een primaire bron citeert.
Waar worden fysieke kopieën bewaard?
Inscripties kunnen nog in situ zijn, of in lapidaria, of in musea. Papyri liggen meestal in museale depots.
Wordt er intussen gewerkt aan digitalisering?
Volop. Voor papyri is er bijvoorbeeld Trismegistos, voor Latijnse inscripties de al genoemde EDCS. Veel middeleeuwse manuscripten zijn inmiddels gefotografeerd. Dat geldt ook voor de belangrijkste papyri en daarbij worden diverse lichtsoorten en diverse soorten software gebruikt, waardoor nog weleens iets zichtbaar wordt dat eerst niet zichtbaar was. Anders gezegd: gebruik nooit een oude tekstuitgave, al is er niet altijd een recente.
Zijn er vermoedens van geschreven bronnen die ergens opgeslagen liggen maar niet bekend zijn?
In Oxford liggen een half miljoen papyri op uitgave te wachten. In Londen zo’n 100.000 kleitabletten. We kunnen nog wel even vooruit.
Deze blog, die u ook via het Whatsapp-kanaal kunt volgen, is niet mijn enige activiteit. In het voorjaar organiseer ik een reis naar Bulgarije en een andere reis langs Keltische locaties.
