Thrasher is an Inuk singer-songwriter, recorded this debut in the 70s that was then re-reissued by Light in the Attic in 2015 following the interest in the compilation they had released the previous year, Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966-1985. 18. I heard this song on WMPG's show, #TheWeavers with #LisaSockabasin. What a great lead-up to today's #DemocracyNow broadcast (Weavers is at 11:30am, while Democracy Now airs at Noon).

"You provided us a home; our conduct is shameful
Momma! We need you now more than ever
I can't believe the way we treated you; better late than never
I've taken you for granted but from here and now I cherish you
And this my open letter to show the pain that I share with you
You've given us a life, my brothers make you hurt
But all they see is dollar signs when stealing out your purse
Man, they never taken the time to see you for what you really worth
But the damage done is permanent it can't be reversed

Oh Momma! You really made some shady people
You've given them the world but like the sun you see no evil
Momma D was my teacher but she gone now
I know where I belong now; my mother's keeper
So Momma I refuse to see you die this way
I take your pain to fuel my fame to fight the game another day

It's oil mines and pipelines; show me what the cancer is
Injected in your veins I'll tell you what the answer is
    Momma, Momma!
    (Wade, in the water)
    Momma, Momma!
    (Wade, in the water, children)"

They recently released a heavy as bricks EP. Has some good samples about #NDNcountry. Go buy their merch and stream their stuff wherever.

P.S. #Blackbraid is releasing a new album soon. They've got some singles available. If you're into #blackMetal or #IndigenousMusic check them out.

  29. Self-Titled Summer | A Tribe Called Red (2012, Cayuga First Nation/Mohawk/Nipissing First Nation)

Welcome back, all! Hope you listened to some great music while I took a break for a few weeks.

We’re going to keep it simple at 1001 Other Albums headquarters for the next few months, so I’ve decided to begin a new spotlight series that will stretch the entirety of the upcoming summer season (well, the upcoming season for where I’m geographically located, sorry Southern Hemisphere friends). As you might guess from the title of this post, the “Self-Titled Summer” (or, the alternate name for those of us who like thumbing through a thesaurus: “Eponymous Estivation”) series will take a look at albums in The List that are self-titled. We’ve already looked at a few of them but still have about 50 left, so we’re going to fit in as many as we can before we hit the fall equinox. That said, we’re also starting a couple weeks prior to summer solstice, so there are no real rules, yolo, etc. etc.

Anyway, for each spotlight in this series, I’m going to try to keep it basic. Self-titleds are typically debut albums, so they’re often the sonic record of a band/musician finding their sound – or a newly solo musician looking to forge their own path -, making many of these albums springboards into discography deep dives. So rather than attempting to address the entire context of the album in the write-up, I’ll just point out some brief(ish) facts and let you, reader, dig further if said facts strike your fancy.

And so, as we’ll be doing this in alphabetical fashion, first up in our Self-Titled Summer is number 1014 on The List, submitted by myself (buffyleigh).

    • Point(s) of origin: Formed in 2007, this is A Tribe Called Red’s first studio album. Band members on this release are Bear Witness (of the Cayuga First Nation), DJ NDN (of the Nipissing First Nation), and DJ Shub (Mohawk, of the Six Nations of the Grand River). In 2021, the band will change their name to The Halluci Nation.
    • Tasting notes: Their unique sound is labelled “powwow-step” (or, “electric powwow”), a mix of dubstep, electro, dancehall, reggae, First Nations music (esp. vocals, drumming), and (as may be guessed from the play on ‘A Tribe Called Quest’ in the original name) hip hop.
    • Standout track: While not really representative of the rest of the album, “Woodcarver” is a harrowing track, featuring soundbites around the 2010 police shooting of Indigenous woodcarver John T. Williams in Seattle.[1]
    • Where are they now?: The band is now a duo of Bear Witness and Tim “2oolman” Hill (Mohawk, of the Six Nations of the Grand River), based out of Ottawa. They’re currently in the middle of a short US tour – June 6 in Portland, ME, June 7 in Burlington, VT, then Seattle and Portland in July.
    • Websites: Band website, Wikipedia

    Happy listening!

  35. Musical Interlude: One of the artists I saw this past weekend at the Old Time Music Festival was Jamie Fox (one x), an Indigenous fiddler from Montana, who taught us all a bit about the Old Time Music tradition in Indigenous communities...I mean, they absorbed a lot from us musically as well. She identifies as Métis, meaning a mixture of European and Indigenous cultures and ancestry, although here in the US she's identified as a certain tribe by the government.

Anyway, here's a nice video where she introduces herself and performs a few pieces. Listen and learn.

"White Buffalo," "Cut Knife Hill," and "Empty Canoe," performed by Jamie Fox.

  36. Sumé – Sumut (1973, Greenland)

Our next spotlight is on number 383 on The List, submitted by myself (buffyleigh).

As with our last spotlight, I came across this one while specifically searching for cool albums to include in The List. A year later, it remains one of my favourite finds for both the project and, well, ever.

Sumé was the first Greenlandic rock band in Greenland, making Sumut, their debut, to be the first rock album released in the Greenlandic language, i.e., their own language rather than the language of the Danish colonizers. Even without looking into what the lyrics mean, that language choice plus the intense artwork – a reproduction of a 19th century woodcutting by Aron of Kangeq that depicts an Inuit person standing over a Norseman they had just killed – clues the listener into the fact that this album was making a political statement.

In fact the album – released just 6 years before a referendum that would gain Greenland home rule and therefore greater autonomy from Denmark (who had ruled the island since 1814) – would become a key part in Greenland’s fight for independence from Danish rule. The lyrics were revolutionary, presenting the political concerns of the Greenlandic people as well as simply using their own voice and not the skewed (i.e., racist) voice of white colonizers to depict the day-to-day lives of Inuit people. Check out some snippets below:[1]

Track 1 – “Pivfît Nutât” (“New Times”)

I wake up – I’ve been sleeping for a long time
They tell me two and half days have gone by for two and half centuries
I realise that they’re still here
They are here to get rich and to oppress us
Greenland, “The Lands of the People”
You can’t keep sheltering your children from harm
    New times have begun
The old days we have left behind

Track 4 – “Tamorassâriat” (“The First Bite of the Seal”)

My father is a great hunter
He arrives with a big catch
Those who want the first bite of the seal rush down to the beach
    To get a good treat
The first bite of the seal

    Track 7 – “Erĸasûteĸarneĸ” (“Worry”)

    Always a colony
    Always oppressed
    Leadership missing
    Makes you blind
Never turn your back and be silent

    Track 10 – “Ukiaĸ” (“Spring”)

The Earth, because it’s always spinning
    The great day darkens
    Nature is transforming
My love is putting on her warm coat

The flower is already getting brown
And I learn that’s the way it is
    Like my friend
Without hiding, it becomes the soil

That poor kayak, it loses its skin
    Deteriorated by time
    Naked, it becomes a skeleton
    Its time has come

Track 11 – “Nalunaerasuartaut Toĸuvoĸ” (“The Telegraph is Dead”)

    The telegraph is dead
    Connection failed
What is happening in the world?
    Is there peace out there?

Apparently 20%(!) of Greenland’s entire population bought Sumut. And it’s not that surprising as, apart from the lyrics that inspired the Greenlandic people to take political action, the album sounds damn good. Sumé’s style, fusing psychedelic/prog rock with some traditional Inuit sounds (particularly from drum dances), would have a great impact on future Greenlandic rock, which remains a huge genre in the country.

The band would release two more albums soon after Sumut (Inuit Nunaat in 1974 and a s/t in 1976), and then reunited in 1994 for one last album, Persersume. Twenty years later, following the first reissue of Sumut, Sumé – Mumisitsinerup Nipaa (“Sumé – The Sound of a Revolution“) was released, a 2014 Greenlandic documentary from director Inuk Silis Høegh that celebrates the band, the album, and their impact on Greenlandic history.

Methinks, given *all of this*, it’s a good time to give this album a spin.

  37. After decades of artistic liberties, folk singer Buffy Sainte-Marie' admits she is not #Canadian and her #Polaris music prize was revoked.

That same day, the #Canadian #Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences said in a news release: "Following a thorough review, consultations with the CARAS #IndigenousMusic Advisory Committee, and in light of recent information, including Ms. Sainte-Marie’s confirmation that she is not Canadian, #CARAS will revoke Buffy Sainte-Marie's #JUNOAwards and Canadian Music #HallofFame induction in accordance with its eligibility requirements."

While long swirling rumors of native ancestry go unchecked , it has been investigated that the octogenarian folk music artist had no genetic ties to indigenous tribal ancestry. Sainte-Marie has said that when she was a young adult she was #adopted by a #Cree family in the Canadian #province of #Saskatchewan and has "lived with uncertainty" about her true heritage.
