Join us for the Dutch Premier of “Kintun Nütram” and an evening of solidarity with the Indigenous Mapuche people of Chile. “Kintun Nütram” (meaning “search for conversation” in Mapuzungun), focuses on the case of Nelson Queupil Soto, a Mapuche political prisoner currently incarcerated at the Temuco prison (Chile, Araucanía region).

Nelson’s case resonates with the public because it is set against the backdrop of Mapuche land reclamation efforts—a conflict that has been ongoing since 1861 with the so-called “Occupation of Araucania,” a military campaign launched by the Chilean government that involved the annexation and colonization of Mapuche territory, as well as the prohibition of the use of Mapuzungun (the Mapuche language) and various cultural practices for over a century.

In addition to the film, we will have a Q&A Discussion with the film’s Director, Likan Manque Cona. Likan, who is also a Mapuche hip-hop artist, sings about contemporary issues facing the Mapuche people in an effort to use artivism to increase awareness and seek justice for his people.

Before and after the main event, we will also have a small Indigenous Market, where Indigenous made crafts and food will be available for sale, including earrings made by Nelson Queupil Soto during his time in prison. Any profits from this event will go towards supporting Mapuche political prisoners & related Mapuche causes.

“Kintun Nütram” (buscar conversación en Mapuzungun) es un documental realizado de forma autónoma y auto gestionada por estudiantes Mapuche de la región de Los Rios en Chile.
El documental está enfocado en el caso de Nelson Queupil Soto, preso político Mapuche que actualmente se encuentra prisionero en la cárcel de Temuco (Chile, región de la Araucania). Su caso resuena entre la gente ya que se enmarca dentro del contexto de recuperaciones territoriales Mapuche, un conflicto que se viene arrastrando desde 1861 con la llamada “Ocupación de la Araucania”, campaña militar impulsada por el estado de Chile que implicó la anexión y colonización de territorio Mapuche, además de prohibir el uso del Mapuzungun (idioma Mapuche) y diversas prácticas culturales durante más de un siglo.
Nelson Queupil Soto es dirigente de la comunidad “Pancho Marivil ll”, comunidad Mapuche que ha iniciado distintos procesos de reivindicación territorial y cultural, reclamando territorio histórico que actualmente está en mano de empresas que se desentienden del conflicto y ocupan más del 90% de territorio que antes era considerado Mapuche.

Nelson Queupil cumple una condena de 10 años por porte ilegal de armas y homocidio tentado contra carabineros (policía chilena) pero hasta el día de hoy no se encuentran pruebas de ningún arma, no se encontraron huellas dactilares, no se encontraron fotos ni videos que evidencien la participación de Nelson Queupil en ninguno de los delitos que se le acusan.

El documental profundiza en su caso entrevistando a su abogado defensor, familiares y estudiantes Mapuche que viven en la zona donde ocurrieron los hechos (Región de los rios, Mafil).

Nelson Queupil Soto es un dirigente Mapuche que se movilizó por la reivindicación territorial Mapuche y se le vincula a la organización L.N.M. (Liberación Nacional Mapuche), actualmente considerada una organización terrorista por el estado de Chile. Es en este contexto que mucha gente considera la condena de Nelson injusta, encarcelado por razones políticas más que criminales y es lo que nos llevó como estudiantes a realizar este documental.

Statement by Mapuche Political Prisoners Convicted in CAM-Lautaro Case

PUBLIC COMMUNIQUE FROM THE MAPUCHE CAM POLITICAL PRISONERS – LAUTARO CASE

Kiñe: First of all, thank all the people who accompanied us in this oral trial process in which, finally, we were wrongly convicted. To the different Mapuche communities, families and homes, to our people, all our gratitude goes.

Epu: We understand this sentence as the result of political persecution against the autonomist Mapuche movement, specifically against the CAM, an organization of which weichafe are proud. We show how this process was carried out in a biased and racist manner, which did not have any evidence that linked us, as well as the use of secret witnesses who, in the end, did not even testify in court.

Kvla: That, the Winka court convicted us for the crimes of repeated arson, theft, simple kidnapping and in two particular cases for carrying ammunition. Reclassifying two crimes and acquitting them of the crimes of carrying prohibited weapons, carrying conventional weapons and unjustified shooting.

Meli: We understand that the court, given the poor investigation by the prosecution and the solid arguments of our defenses, decided to make an ACCOMMODATION that would allow political condemnation at any cost against us, without in any case having the minimum elements to do so.

Kechu: With our heads held high we declare that we will not accept this disastrous condemnation and that, if the Chilean State persists in criminalizing and persecuting the historic and dignified Mapuche struggle, wanting to condemn us for it, that it at least take charge of the Rule of Law that they so proclaim, that it obtain the evidence and condemn under its laws, not based on tricks, falsehoods, political pressures and the use of the bourgeois press subservient to business interests.

Likewise, we call on the judiciary to stop being the punitive arm of fascism and the ultra-right in Wallmapu.

Kayu: Because of all of the above, on the day of the sentencing, we will begin a mobilization to denounce this flawed judicial process of which they made us a part. In this instance we also want to support our peñi Daniel Canio, who after having served more than half of his sentence is still being denied his prison benefits.

Having faced this process as pu weichafe, today convicted, we consider it necessary to address the Mapuche movement and our people in general after almost 4 years in prison and declare that we are not defeated, much less ashamed or regretful of embracing such a dignified and just struggle as ours, quite the contrary, we continue to advance with the determination of never kneeling before our enemies.

Finally, we call to continue in the weichan, to remain in the territorial dispute against the forestry companies and big business, to continue resisting the structural and colonialist racism of the Chilean State, even more so today where fascism and the Zionist extreme right govern.

Mapuche Nation: Prisoners Declare a Hunger Strike in Support of Lonko Facundo Jones Huala

As a gesture of solidarity and firm support, the comrades of Lonko Francisco Facundo Jones Huala, housed in Pavilion 5 of Unit 6 in Rawson, have declared a hunger strike. They are protesting for the Lonko’s health, the unsanitary conditions of the infirmary where he has been hospitalized since yesterday, and the worsening prison conditions.

This means they are refusing the food provided by the Federal Penitentiary Service, in clear support of the Lonko (Mapuche leader) and as a protest demanding he receive immediate medical attention appropriate to his health condition, given the severity of his illness after more than 56 days of hunger strike and 6 days of dry fasting.

We denounce the fact that the Lonko, since being transferred yesterday in a state of decompensation to Santa Teresita Hospital, where he was given IV fluids and underwent tests, was returned that same afternoon and admitted to the prison’s infirmary. He was held incommunicado until this afternoon when he was discharged and taken back to his cellblock, only then able to contact his family. He has lost a significant amount of weight; after 56 days of hunger strike, he weighed 63 kilos yesterday, and a heart problem was detected as a result of the hunger strike, suggesting he may have suffered a heart attack.

The lives and well-being of many people deprived of their liberty matter. This extreme measure demonstrates the lack of political response to the demands made and the deteriorating health of Lonko Facundo Jones Huala.

We hold the prison and judicial authorities responsible for any irreversible consequences to the health and life of the Lonko and his comrades on hunger strike.

And although the risk is even greater, as a support network, we want to make this collective action visible in solidarity, mobilizing more people around the many injustices committed against the Lonko.
