  1. “I was hoping that at this point we'd be having more detailed and interesting conversations about what are we building now. Instead…I feel like we're spinning our wheels having the same conversations.”

  2. Inuit artist Helen Konek was 17 years old when she was photographed walking into her family’s igloo in 1949, just outside what was then known as Eskimo Point (now Arviat, Nunavut).

Richard Harrington, a freelance photographer who had an interest in the North, took the photos of Helen while travelling in the Arctic that year.

His work was purchased by Canada's National Archives, the Smithsonian and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Helen died July 25 at the age of 95, but is forever immortalized in Harrington's images.

"I'm glad the image went viral, because even up to today, Canadians don't know where Nunavut is. They don't know who Inuit are," - Jordan Konek, Helen's nephew

  3. #IndigenousGardens in #Ontario

" #Indigenous gardens and other special places are designed for people to gather, learn, heal, reflect and celebrate the diverse and rich #FirstNations, #Inuit and #Métis cultures.

"From the banks of the St. Marys River in #SaultSainteMarie and #LakeSuperior in #ThunderBay to downtown #Toronto, learn about the important role of Indigenous gardens in honouring #IndigenousCulture and knowledge in Ontario.

"Traditional plants, including the four sacred medicines — #sage, #tobacco, #cedar and #sweetgrass — are often integral to Indigenous gardens.

    - Sage is often used in smudging, where the smoke is washed over participants to cleanse away negative energy.
    - Cedar is a protective medicine that can be used as cedar tea, cedar baths or hung in the home to guard against bad elements.
    - Sweetgrass is a kindness medicine. It reminds us to be good to others, the world and ourselves.
    - Tobacco is a relationship medicine offered to start things: before a harvest, before a hunt, before asking for assistance from an Elder or to start the day. It opens up communication and ushers in good energy.

"Learn more about Indigenous gardens in Ontario and their significance. This is a short list of the many Indigenous gardens across the province. Please respect these Indigenous spaces, as not all gardens are open to the public."

  4. The Search for Franklin: A 170-Year-Old Mystery

The search began in 1848. In 1854, John Rae heard of the crew's fate by local Inuit; accounts of starvation and cannibalism. These reports, including artifacts, were dismissed by British authorities. For over a century, official search parties largely ignored Inuit knowledge of the events and potential wreck locations. #Canada #FranklinExpedition #Inuit #JohnRae 🇨🇦

  5. knowledge is in the landscape — #firstnations communities continue to defend it, from erasure, exclusion, and demonisation. Recognising this knowledge is the first step in reimagining the future of conservation itself: one that is not imposed from the outside, but built in partnership with those who have long understood how to live on, with, and off the land, whether that land is the #Inuit Nunangat, Kalaallit Nunaat/Greenland, or the country now known as Australia.
