  1. A Single Haunting Note: The Franklin Tragedy

The only official record: a note found in a cairn on King William Island. It states the ships were trapped in ice from Sept. 1846 and Sir John Franklin died on June 11, 1847. In April 1848, 105 survivors abandoned the vessels to march south. None survived. Evidence points to starvation, scurvy, & lead poisoning from faulty food tins. #Canada #FranklinExpedition #ArcticMystery #Tragedy 🇨🇦

  2. RE: mastodon.hongkongers.net/@cbcn

Video:

  5. The Search for Franklin: A 170-Year-Old Mystery

The search began in 1848. In 1854, John Rae heard of the crew's fate by local Inuit; accounts of starvation and cannibalism. These reports, including artifacts, were dismissed by British authorities. For over a century, official search parties largely ignored Inuit knowledge of the events and potential wreck locations. #Canada #FranklinExpedition #Inuit #JohnRae 🇨🇦

  7. My little side-project has just appeared on Amazon.com...

What happens when you own a little publishing company, and you discover that a classic of polar exploration is filled with beautiful colour illustrations and appendices that may not have been published since the 1820s?

You get a new deluxe edition of Sir John Franklin's Journey to the Polar Sea (with a hardcover coming as well):

Btw: The name of that curator is Niels W. Jannasch. He was the great-grandson of Johann August #Miertsching, a Sorb from Upper Lusatia, who took part in the search for #Franklin and the discovery of the Northwest Passage.

  15. Franklin's High-Tech Quest for the Arctic

In 1845, Sir John Franklin sought the Northwest Passage with HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. These were advanced polar vessels, featuring steam engines, iron hulls, and a three-year supply of tinned food—a new technology. The British Admiralty expected a quick victory, equipping the 129-man crew for what they believed was a guaranteed success. #Canada #FranklinExpedition #Arctic #History 🇨🇦

  31. DNA reveals identity of Franklin expedition officer; remains show signs of cannibalism

Nearly 179 years after Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated expedition to find the Northwest Passage, scientists have positively identified the remains of James Fitzjames, one of the senior officers aboard the HMS Erebus. The discovery confirms cannibalism in the final days of the expedition...
