On the site of one of the worst in Canada - #Namgis territory, #AlertBay. It was called St. Michael's Indian Residential School. It was demolished in 2015. #Umista Cultural Center sits on the old site. #Indigenous peoples have reclaimed their land there & are trying to heal from colonial abuses.We have racists in #Canada who are currently dishonouring the victims of residential schools by denying survivors' histories & saying mass graves are a lie. This is so wrong. We owe the ones who died & the living survivors support & reparations. Please don't let folks use denialism around you - confront them & stand up for the victims & survivors.

Officials with the federal government told organizations and community leaders responsible for searches for #MissingChildren and #UnmarkedBurials at #ResidentialSchool sites Thursday their funding is being capped at $500,000 per year.
That cap is substantially less than previous operating budgets and much less than what organizations estimate is required to continue the work.
Special Interlocutor Kimberly Murray said this is the third time the funding structure for searches has changed and that her interim report released last summer pointed at a lack of sufficient long-term funding. She said this recommendation will be echoed in her final report and that it was "absolutely ridiculous" for the government to say they were waiting on these recommendations when they are clearly not applying them.
"But it's also part of, like, settler amnesty, right, and a culture of #impunity … we stop funding communities to do the work, then less truths are going to come out, and, you know, there'll be less calls for #justice and #accountability, and they won't have to comply with their international legal obligations," she said.

The placement was approved by both #BritishColumbia Ministry of #Children & Family Development & the family service’s department of the boy’s First Nation, but the report says the ministry did not complete #BackgroundChecks or visit the home before the siblings were moved there.
Charlesworth said the lack of communication, #DueDiligence & #DueProcess would “prove to be a massive error” because those in charge of the boy’s safety could have learned the woman had prior involvement with the ministry over physical #abuse of her child & there were documented concerns about her partner’s “conduct with children.”

6 complainants from #LakeBabine #FirstNation took their concerns on #RCMP #investigation to #Canadian #HumanRights Commission in 2016 & commission referred complaint for #inquiry in 2020. In years since, awaiting their hearing, 3 complainants & 1 witness have died.

Webstad said the society is also now having to police the use of the phrase #EveryChildMatters . In February 2022 it was adopted #WithoutConsent by organizers of the #FreedomConvoy - which in turn was #denounced by Webstad & the Northern #Secwépemc te #Qelmucw #Chiefs .
Now, at age 55, Webstad says she dreams of the day she will be free of her own story. She wants to complete her work and then live a life that doesn’t require her to be a public figure. -

A #JointStatement Thursday said the new healing house will provide #TraumaInformed programs to help the community spiritually, mentally, emotionally & physically.
