Huge #OrangeShirt #memorial to honour all the native kids' lives lost in the cruel #ResidentialSchool system.
On the site of one of the worst in Canada - #Namgis territory, #AlertBay. It was called St. Michael's Indian Residential School. It was demolished in 2015. #Umista Cultural Center sits on the old site. #Indigenous peoples have reclaimed their land there & are trying to heal from colonial abuses.

We have racists in #Canada who are currently dishonouring the victims of residential schools by denying survivors' histories & saying mass graves are a lie. This is so wrong. We owe the ones who died & the living survivors support & reparations. Please don't let folks use denialism around you - confront them & stand up for the victims & survivors.

I went for a 4 km walk today. I had more energy than I did yesterday, thankfully. However, I am starting to have hot flashes again. What gives?

Tomorrow morning, I plan on wearing my orange shirt and joining the #EveryChildMatters walk. I hope my body cooperates. I still want to know why Truth and Reconciliation Day is only a holiday for bankers and politicians. A lot of Indigenous people can't participate because they don't get the day off. Hardly seems reconciliatory, does it?

SNIWWOC will be hosting our annual Truth and Reconciliation event at KWENCH bringing #community members together for an evening of #education, #togetherness, and #remembrance for Truth and Reconciliation in #VictoriaBC on September 30th 2024, 5:30-7:30pm PST.

#JoinUs to learn about the sacred #Indigenous practice of #RibbonSkirt making and the significance it holds within the Indigenous community. You will have the unique opportunity to view these beautiful skirts made by BC Indigenous/Indigenous BIPOC individuals, and learn about the importance of continuing these traditions.

You will also have the privilege to #WitnessTestimony from #ResidentialSchoolSurvivors, the ones who did not make it as well as for honoring all #IndigenousCommunities.

Truth and Reconciliation, also known as #OrangeShirtDay, is a reminder of what was done in #Canadian history that impacted the #IndigenousPeople, and continues to impact generations of Indigenous communities. On this day we highlight how the conversation needs to be continued as a step for #healing and #reconciliation.

SNIWWOC would like to take this time and day to #honor the people and their #culture that was lost. You will hear from a variety of #IndigenousSpeakers, #CommunityElders, and be witness to #SacredKnowledge, in the #SafeSpace that we will hold for all that would like to be part of this experience.

Webstad said the society is also now having to police the use of the phrase #EveryChildMatters . In February 2022 it was adopted #WithoutConsent by organizers of the #FreedomConvoy - which in turn was #denounced by Webstad & the Northern #Secwépemc te #Qelmucw #Chiefs .
Now, at age 55, Webstad says she dreams of the day she will be free of her own story. She wants to complete her work and then live a life that doesn’t require her to be a public figure.
