Forscher warnen vor extremen Waldbränden

Die #Erderwärmung steuert laut der Forschungsgruppe World Weather Attribution (#WWA) heuer auf einen Höhepunkt zu. Von Jänner bis April seien mit über 150 Millionen Hektar über ein Fünftel mehr Land verbrannt als beim bisherigen Negativrekord. Dabei stehe die Brandsaison in vielen Teilen der Erde erst bevor. Der rasante Start in Kombination mit dem prognostizierten #ElNino deute auf ein besonders verheerendes Jahr.

In #Afrika sind laut WWA in diesem Jahr bereits 85 Millionen Hektar verbrannt, 23 Prozent mehr als beim bisherigen Höchststand. Ursache seien rasche Wechsel von extrem feuchten zu extrem trockenen Bedingungen, erklärt Theodore Keeping, Experte für #Waldbrände am Imperial College London und Mitglied der WWA. Starke Regenfälle hätten in der vorangegangenen Wachstumsperiode für mehr Gras gesorgt, das nun als Brennmaterial für die durch #Dürre und #Hitze ausgelösten #Savannenbrände diene. In #Asien fielen den Flammen bisher 44 Millionen Hektar zum Opfer, fast 40 % mehr als im bisherigen Rekordjahr 2014. Zu den am stärksten betroffenen Ländern zählen #Indien, #Myanmar, #Thailand, #Laos und #China.

„El Nino“ ist ein Klimaphänomen, bei dem sich der östliche #Pazifik ungewöhnlich erwärmt, was weltweit zu extremen Wetterlagen führt. Keeping warnt, dass „El Nino“ die Wahrscheinlichkeit von extremer Hitze und Dürre in #Australien, #Kanada, den #USA und dem #Amazonas-#Regenwald erhöhe. Sollte sich ein starker „El Nino“ entwickeln, könnte die Gefahr extremer Brände den höchsten Stand der jüngeren Geschichte erreichen. Das Wetterphänomen wird ab Mai erwartet. Die WWA-Mitbegründerin und Klimaforscherin Friederike Otto erklärt, bei einem starken „El Nino“ im weiteren Jahresverlauf bestehe die ernste Gefahr, dass dessen Auswirkungen zusammen mit dem #Klimawandel zu beispiellosen #Unwetter'n und #Hitzewellen führen würden.

Forscher warnen vor extremen Waldbränden

Die #Erderwärmung steuert laut der Forschungsgruppe World Weather Attribution (#WWA) heuer auf einen Höhepunkt zu. Von Jänner bis April seien mit über 150 Millionen Hektar über ein Fünftel mehr Land verbrannt als beim bisherigen Negativrekord. Dabei stehe die Brandsaison in vielen Teilen der Erde erst bevor. Der rasante Start in Kombination mit dem prognostizierten #ElNino deute auf ein besonders verheerendes Jahr.

In #Afrika sind laut WWA in diesem Jahr bereits 85 Millionen Hektar verbrannt, 23 Prozent mehr als beim bisherigen Höchststand. Ursache seien rasche Wechsel von extrem feuchten zu extrem trockenen Bedingungen, erklärt Theodore Keeping, Experte für #Waldbrände am Imperial College London und Mitglied der WWA. Starke Regenfälle hätten in der vorangegangenen Wachstumsperiode für mehr Gras gesorgt, das nun als Brennmaterial für die durch #Dürre und #Hitze ausgelösten #Savannenbrände diene. In #Asien fielen den Flammen bisher 44 Millionen Hektar zum Opfer, fast 40 % mehr als im bisherigen Rekordjahr 2014. Zu den am stärksten betroffenen Ländern zählen #Indien, #Myanmar, #Thailand, #Laos und #China.

„El Nino“ ist ein Klimaphänomen, bei dem sich der östliche #Pazifik ungewöhnlich erwärmt, was weltweit zu extremen Wetterlagen führt. Keeping warnt, dass „El Nino“ die Wahrscheinlichkeit von extremer Hitze und Dürre in #Australien, #Kanada, den #USA und dem #Amazonas-#Regenwald erhöhe. Sollte sich ein starker „El Nino“ entwickeln, könnte die Gefahr extremer Brände den höchsten Stand der jüngeren Geschichte erreichen. Das Wetterphänomen wird ab Mai erwartet. Die WWA-Mitbegründerin und Klimaforscherin Friederike Otto erklärt, bei einem starken „El Nino“ im weiteren Jahresverlauf bestehe die ernste Gefahr, dass dessen Auswirkungen zusammen mit dem #Klimawandel zu beispiellosen #Unwetter'n und #Hitzewellen führen würden.
