Huge #OrangeShirt #memorial to honour all the native kids' lives lost in the cruel #ResidentialSchool system.
On the site of one of the worst in Canada - #Namgis territory, #AlertBay. It was called St. Michael's Indian Residential School. It was demolished in 2015. #Umista Cultural Center sits on the old site. #Indigenous peoples have reclaimed their land there & are trying to heal from colonial abuses.

We have racists in #Canada who are currently dishonouring the victims of residential schools by denying survivors' histories & saying mass graves are a lie. This is so wrong. We owe the ones who died & the living survivors support & reparations. Please don't let folks use denialism around you - confront them & stand up for the victims & survivors.

The hours are irregular, like most small businesses on #CormorantIsland. If you luck out - you'll find the Duchess of #Bannock & she will fill your belly while engaging in lively conversations!
I found out on my 2023 trip there, that she's an Auntie/relative to some of my Indigenous friends 💗

She gifted me a book, a magic hat bunny plushie & gave us free cheese bannock bites to eat on the ferry. We bought 3 different bannock goodies from her.

Part of the old #Namgis #BurialGrounds - there's a new one, in different area of island. When the memorial totems fall down, they're left there because BC coastal #FirstNations believe it's part of the natural cycle of returning ancestors to their lands; post physical deaths.

#UmistaCulturalCentre was built on grounds of now demolished St. Michael's #ResidentialSchool in #AlertBay on #CormorantIsland . Owned & run by #NamgisNation on #NamgisTerritory . It houses their #potlatch #artifacts / #regalia repatriated from colonizers who stole them. No photos inside.

There's fir & cedar #trees - #growing out of the decaying old #dock #wood - which used to be a loading area for long abandoned fish saltery/cannery/fish nets sorting station. #Nature is incredibly #resilient & if left alone, it will #reclaim anything man has built.

In 1881 the #AlertBay #Canning Co. added a canning line to their existing #salmon #saltery .Purchased by #BCPackersAssociation in 1902. It closed in 1933 & re-opened for two seasons in 1940-1941.

What #remains of an #old #BCCoast #FishingBoat - the #GlendaLynn - lies on shores of #AlertBay on #CormorantIsland in #BritishColumbia #Canada . I haven't been able to find #history of this #boatWreck & would be interested in learning about it; if anyone knows more. 10 yrs ago, you could still see her name on both sides of boat. In 2023, it's decayed more & the name is only intact on one side. A #remnant of BC's early ocean fishing industry. The boat shed beside it is #abandoned & #FallingApart
