  1. Musical Interlude: Here's another band from the Old Time Festival...Baltimore's resident old time music band, headed by one of the festival's founders. Brad Kolodner not only plays with his band, he hosts a bluegrass radio show and had concerts in his living room. Dude IS music!

"Margaret's Waltz," performed by Charm City Junction.

  3. Musical Interlude: At the Old Time Festival, I saw the Golden Shoals (again). I saw them first when they were called the Hoot and Hollers...not sure why they changed their name, but oh well. I'm not a huge fan of their recordings, which are hit and miss for me, but live they're fun. This song came from a visit the singer made to an elderly musician who invited her to stay for a few days, and they lazed about the house in the mountains, puttering and making music. It's a great "vibe" song for a lazy weekend.

  10. We spent a lovely long weekend at the Golden Old-Time Campout in Guerneville, CA… right on the Russian River. Much music was made under the pines and stars, and many new friends were made too. :BlobhajPrideHeart: #Bluegrass #Americana #OldTimeMusic

  11. Musical Interlude: Listening to Willi Carlisle while on my road trip this weekend, I was struck by this tune, which is almost gospel in sound if not content. It's a grand declaration of individuality and personal freedom.

"I Won't Be Afraid," performed live by Willi Carlisle.

  12. Musical Interlude: At one of the Old Time Musical festivals, I first heard Dom Flemons, formerly of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. A great performer and historian, and an electric stage presence, he deserves to be more widely known.

"Big Money Blues," performed by Dom Flemons.

  15. Musical Interlude: Vermonters Dana and Susan Robinson came through my area a few years ago, and I caught them at a house concert. They just did an album of Vermont-inspired songs, including this paean to a small-town country store that was for sale...

  16. Musical Interlude: When the Old Time Festival was first announced, I was happy to see that Jake Blount's name was on the list, as I'm quite a fan of his. Then I was sad to see his name gone from the lineup...oh well, guess he had to cancel...

Then when I get there, they introduce a brand new group, New Dangerfield....featuring Jake Blount! Woohoo! Now it all made sense. New Dangerfield is an all-black string band, looking to uncover the history of black string band and black artists in old time music.

"Put No Walls Around Your Garden," performed by New Dangerfield.

  17. Musical Interlude: Evie Ladin, who I saw last weekend, was very memorable. She's a singer, banjoist, percussive dancer, and square dance caller...quite a combination! Here she is, playing and singing...

"Precious Days," performed by Evie Ladin.

  18. Musical Interlude: This past weekend I saw Tall Poppy perform. I'm already familiar with NZ-born fiddler George Jackson, but now he has a new band that totally slaps.

"Fortune," performed by the Tall Poppy String Band.

  19. Musical Interlude: Another act I saw over the weekend was this fun duo, the Canote Brothers. These identical twins from Seattle are in their 70s and do a LOT of work with kids; they even a special family concert on Saturday morning. They're charming and sweet; their jokes are sometimes corny and obvious, but they tell them so perfectly they're still funny. I took to them immediately.

  20. Musical Interlude: One of the artists I saw this past weekend at the Old Time Music Festival was Jamie Fox (one x), an Indigenous fiddler from Montana, who taught us all a bit about the Old Time Music tradition in Indigenous communities...I mean, they absorbed a lot from us musically as well. She identifies as Métis, meaning a mixture of European and Indigenous cultures and ancestry, although here in the US she's identified as a certain tribe by the government.

Anyway, here's a nice video where she introduces herself and performs a few pieces. Listen and learn.

"White Buffalo," "Cut Knife Hill," and "Empty Canoe," performed by Jamie Fox.

  21. Musical Interlude: I happened on this band by chance, liked their name, and investigated their music. I've been delighted with everything I hear from them, and hope they'll swing by my neck of the woods sometimes.

"Fourth Decade," performed by the Faux Paws.

  23. Spent an inordinate amount of time today contemplating this 1928 record, "Sal, Let Me Chaw Your Rosin," & the same tune under the names "Hog Eye" (Pope's Arkansas Mountaineers, also 1928), & "Sally in the Garden." Is it also "Jump Jim Crow," the song that launched blackface minstrelsy 100 years earlier? And a sea chantey, "Hog Eye Man," maybe from a (19th century or earlier) black work song on the Mississippi

  24. We need #fiddleTuneFriday to be a thing on here! Here is Lonesome John from the Long Lost String Band with yours truly on the banjo. We won third place at the Lowell Banjo and Fiddle Contest this year playing this one. From Kentucky fiddler, John Salyer, presumably the lonesome John in this one.
Also, we are playing in Roslindale tomorrow, if you’re in the area, at the Substation 1-3pm.
