as opposed to the previous track that I was somewhat meh on, here's a really sizzling fiddle one. got curious to look it up because Spottswood lists a cymbaly player Ivan Lysechko on the disc (no idea who he was).

session info is very incomplete for old Humeniuk recordings (as in, who were the side players) and there are some where I really feel like the backing band are all klezmer musicians lol. anyways here is one from 1940 that I don't find to be that great of a recording but the 4 sidemen are definitely all klezmer musicians (and PMBS members!): Alex Fiedel (trumpet), Sigmund Goldring (bass) Sam Heller (piano) and Harry Zimbler (accordion)

clearly a different cymbalist playing a totally different instrument on this one (a concert cimbalom with dampeners and much larger range). curious who it might have been, there weren't that many players in New York in that era, and almost no Ukrainian ones.

this one is great, absolutely sparkling violin sound, hilariously brainless cymbaly player on autopilot, wonderful crunchy bowed bass

Lets start #Banjofriday with an album full of Sally Anns: Maggie Shar and Brian Slattery are a #banjo and #fiddle stringband duo and here they are playing the same tune seven times: "Sally Ann". As in Jazz, in folk music the same standards are played over and over again. Well-known tunes give orientation, listeners can appreciate the nuances of interpretations.
The "Sally Ann" album never becomes repetitious. Every version is unique, the liner notes are gold.

Hytta Trio – Vindespel https://freq.org.uk/reviews/hytta-trio-vindespel/ They wish to bring these classic folk forms into the twenty-first century and although there is still something ancient in the tone, there is enough modern inspiration and desire for deconstruction to make Vindespel resonate with today’s listener. #hardanger #fiddle #folk #musicreview

Musical Interlude: I adore fiddler Bruce Molsky, who does difficult tunes with amazing ease. For a while, he had a band called Molsky's Mountain Drifters, who I was lucky enough to see live multiple times. Here's an uplifting tune for the difficult times we're having.
"There's a Bright Side Somewhere," performed by Molsky's Mountain Drifters.

🧵1/ Imma shift gears this Saturday afternoon and put my #EthnoMusicology hat on. I’ve always loved #CelticMusic, the music of my ancestors. So seeking to better understand its origins I detoured into #NordicFolkMusic as Scandinavian #Vikings brought much of their culture, including music, to the Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales during their centuries long occupation & rule. I’ve discovered I love the sound of the Hardanger #Fiddle, the Nyckelharpa, the Hurdy-Gurdy and the Cittern. Sharing some of my favorite #MusicVideos from my YT channel (one of 19 playlists). This vid features Annbjørg Lien, the undisputed queen of the Hardanger fiddle, Norway’s most beloved folk instrument, accompanied by Roger Tallroth.
