I have been trying to learn the Ukrainian carol "Dobryy Vechir Tobi" and while a literal translation of "Dobryy vechir tobi, pane hospodaryu" is "Good evening to thee, master/landowner/lord" it would only need a little bit of poetic license to translate that as "God rest ye merry, gentlemen." The things I digress to while overthinking something!

Friends, a lot of you might not even know who Rich Little is, but in 1978 he did a version of A Christmas Carol using people he impersonated as the characters. For example he was doing WC Fields as Scrooge and Paul Lynde as Cratchett, etc....

Most great actors who played Scrooge were hamstrung by the production. Patrick Stewart was dumbed down for Hallmark. Michael Caine had all his scenes stolen by his costars. To play Scrooge well you need to be cold-hearted, sentimental, terrified, giddy, and joyous. Albert Finney nails most of those but a singing role doesn't quite do it. Alistair Sim does them all perfectly.

It saddens me deeply to know the Russian military is destroying much of the Ukraine. For what purpose? Greed, hate, authoritarian oligarchy?! This beautiful carol born in eastern Ukraine has brightened #Christmas for millennia. As sad and terrible as the invasion is, Russia will never win in the long run.
