  1. Gorgeous, #CoastSalish Supernatural Wolf carved cedar #sculpture by Joseph M. Wilson.
He is a member of the #Hulquminum speaking #Cowichan Tribes. Joe was born in #Koksilah.

Not to be confused with Namgis Nation artist/carver, Joe R. Wilson, born in Alert Bay.

  2. I met Harold Joe, a #Cowichan based #Indigenous knowledge keeper/teacher, actor & film producer, in 2015. He had come to Victoria to audition for a lead role in the Telus Optik webseries that I worked on for a few years. We casted him.
He's now co-owner & producer at Orca Cove Media with my old film production executive producer, Leslie Bland.

There's two #IndigenousFilm screenings at #UVIC in March with 2 films from Ocra Cove.

  7. #Namgis #FirstNation #BigHouse - #AlertBay #CormorantIsland. From my 2023 visit.

The Namgis #FirstPeoples use their big house for cultural #community events. #T̓sasała #Cultural Group uses the big house for sharing cultural teachings, songs & dances.

"You will see the next generation of #Kwakwa̱k̕a̱wakw sharing our culture to educate the world about our ancient songs, dances, teachings and values. These teachings are still being passed on today to the children of T'sasała.

You will witness the dances of the T̕seka, our red cedar bark ceremony. You will see the traditional dances that connect us to the land, sky, and sea. The #T̕seka will be followed by the T̕ła'sala ceremony - peace dances, then finally the #A̱mlala or fun dances where you will get a chance to join in."

  8. @cbcbc_mirror #BCNDP & federal Liberals don't care about respecting #IndigenousRights. They have blown millions of tax dollars to sue Indigenous peoples in BC & they sic RCMP on native land defenders. #Colonizers never really changed & are still abusive/exploitive. They never planned to fully implement #UNDRIP.

  9. My friend Beau's latest creation.
A gorgeous #cedar #weaved #hat with a #raven head. Custom made for a #Kwakiutl educator, (from the Raven Clan) in Campbell River.
First photo is of the hat on a worktable.
Second photo is of the hat with a starry skies edit by me.

  10. #ThrowbackThursday
    2020.

#Laichwiltach Nation’s Hereditary Chief Tsahaukuse's (aka George Quocksister Jr.) traditional, #handwoven Chief's #hat. Made from yellow #cedar bark with beading & an #EagleFeather attached.
Sitting in front of the woven hat is a row of some #handcarved miniature canoe #paddles, carved from red & yellow cedar. Chief Darren Blaney of the #Xwémalhkwu aka #Homalco #FirstNation #carved over 100 of these paddles. They were carved in #honour of the many young Homalco lives lost.

  11. One of the new Indigenous friends that I made at the ribbon skirt workshop this weekend, Kecia, is a fellow weirdo Aquarian & from Namgis First Nation in Alert Bay. Although we just met, I've met some of her family from her birthplace prior - it was really cool to chat about those unexpected connections.

Kecia brought this bag that her niece, Brianna Dick, made. It's a gorgeous #PurpleCamas #CoastSalish design.
Brianna has an #OnlineStore where you can see/buy some of her #handmade #Indigenous #ArtsAndCrafts
    briannabearart.bigcartel.com/

#BriannaBearArt is an Indigenous - owned and founded, #Canadian #artist store established in 2020 by Brianna Bear. Based in the traditional territory of the #Lekwungen, place to smoke herring lands of the #Songhees and #Esquimalt nations in #VictoriaBC.

Brianna started first as an artist with more than fifteen plus years of experience. She began learning under her grandfather Skip Dicks younger brother, Butch Dick. Afterwards she branched out into discovering her roots and design through her #cultural connections to Songhees & #Namgis formline design.

Today, working as one of a few Indigenous female artist within her traditional territory of the Songhees people, she has worked on murals, logos, small business designs, small event designs and more!

Brianna believes in telling stories through her design as you will see through this site."

  14. 23 years ago, Andrea Collins (nee Bertorelli), Phil Collins' 1st ex-wife, published a fundraising calendar to help save #SaltspringIsland from more #deforestation. Before she moved to Ireland, she spent many years on SSI, doing wildlife #photography, running an art gallery & being involved in #EnvironmentalActivism.

Howard Fry spent 3 decades as a commercial #photographer in #Vancouver. In 1998 he retired to Salt Spring & became embroiled in a battle to save part of the island from development.

Salt Spring Island residents may be laid back, but they are dead serious about their #trees. They organized a fundraising campaign to buy close to 2,000 acres & turn it into a park.

35 #women between 18 & 74, including high-profile residents such as Andrea Collins, ex-wife of rock star Phil Collins, Birgit Bateman, photographer & wife of Robert Bateman, author & #environmentalist Briony Penn (who also rode Lady Godiva-style through downtown Vancouver) appear tastefully naked in the calendar.

Fry shot all the beautiful #BlackAndWhitePhotos & retains copyright. #Calendar sales of $19.95/unit raised over $200,000 in 2001 & received widespread media attention.

The price tag for the land was $15.9 million. The islanders raised $1.5 million & the provincial, regional & federal governments kicked in the rest.
