  2. Gorgeous, #CoastSalish Supernatural Wolf carved cedar #sculpture by Joseph M. Wilson.
He is a member of the #Hulquminum speaking #Cowichan Tribes. Joe was born in #Koksilah.

Not to be confused with Namgis Nation artist/carver, Joe R. Wilson, born in Alert Bay.

  3. I met Harold Joe, a #Cowichan based #Indigenous knowledge keeper/teacher, actor & film producer, in 2015. He had come to Victoria to audition for a lead role in the Telus Optik webseries that I worked on for a few years. We casted him.
He's now co-owner & producer at Orca Cove Media with my old film production executive producer, Leslie Bland.

There's two #IndigenousFilm screenings at #UVIC in March with 2 films from Ocra Cove.

  4. #Namgis #FirstNation #BigHouse - #AlertBay #CormorantIsland. From my 2023 visit.

The Namgis #FirstPeoples use their big house for cultural #community events. #T̓sasała #Cultural Group uses the big house for sharing cultural teachings, songs & dances.

"You will see the next generation of #Kwakwa̱k̕a̱wakw sharing our culture to educate the world about our ancient songs, dances, teachings and values. These teachings are still being passed on today to the children of T'sasała.

You will witness the dances of the T̕seka, our red cedar bark ceremony. You will see the traditional dances that connect us to the land, sky, and sea. The #T̕seka will be followed by the T̕ła'sala ceremony - peace dances, then finally the #A̱mlala or fun dances where you will get a chance to join in."

  5. If you're up in #Namgis territory/ #AlertBay - you'll want to try & get some yummy bannock eats from #DuchessBannockAndDesserts. The hours are irregular, like most small businesses on #CormorantIsland. If you luck out - you'll find the Duchess of #Bannock & she will fill your belly while engaging in lively conversations!
I found out on my 2023 trip there, that she's an Auntie/relative to some of my Indigenous friends 💗

She gifted me a book, a magic hat bunny plushie & gave us free cheese bannock bites to eat on the ferry. We bought 3 different bannock goodies from her.

    #Beach gooseneck #barnacles find.
There's 3 different types of barnacles found in BC waters/on beaches - acorn, gooseneck & whale - the latter grows on whales' bodies. Barnacles are a longtime, year-round staple #seafood for coastal #Indigenous #FirstNations. In particular, the #Haida & #Kwakwakawakw & #Pacheedaht #FirstPeoples have several documented stories involving barnacles, including food prep recorded histories.

Barnacles are #ancient and can be dated to the middle of Cambrian period of Paleozoic because of Burgess Shale deposits in #BritishColumbia. They're #hermaphroditic #MarineAnimals.

  7. @SRDas We have lots of devils club growing all over in our forests. #Indigenous friends harvest it for medicine & one of my friends also makes natural jewelry pieces from it. It's been used by #CoastSalish peoples for generations.

  8. #ThrowbackThursday
Warming up one of the #Indigenous drums that I've been gifted in the recent 10 years. All my other gifted drums prior to past decade were stolen by RCMP colonial terrorists at past protest raids. I only have one #handmade #deerskin #drum left from the three that were gifted to me during the last decade. One was broken by hereditary Namgis Chief Alfred on past wild salmon flotilla & another was stolen from me, by RCMP CIRG, on a past roadside support camp raid near Gitxsan territory.

  9. Digesting Food Studies—Episode 105: Indigenous Food Sovereignty

Although Indigenous food sovereignty has been attacked and eroded by multiple histories of colonial oppression, rebuilding it can happen—through intergenerational learning, land-based practices, and relationality.

Kaylee Michnik, talks about her article, “Moving Your Body, Soul, and Heart to Share and Harvest Food” from Vol. 8, No. 2 of Canadian Food Studies (doi.org/10.15353/cfs-rcea.v8i2), including the roles we all play in reconciliation & decolonization. Courtney Vaughan offers a response to the text and its challenges. Starting it off is Alexia Moyer’s account of the tasty and tenuous history of camas cultivation by Coast Salish peoples.

  10. @cbcbc_mirror #BCNDP & federal Liberals don't care about respecting #IndigenousRights. They have blown millions of tax dollars to sue Indigenous peoples in BC & they sic RCMP on native land defenders. #Colonizers never really changed & are still abusive/exploitive. They never planned to fully implement #UNDRIP.
