The members of the group have a strong history in bands like Bigbang, Shining, Motorpsycho and Supersilent, but it’s within the constellation Elephant9 that these three musicians have been given the ultimate playground to showcase their eclectic tastes and musical abilities.
Through Torstein Lofthus’ thunderous and hazardous drumming, bass player Nikolai Hængsle’s steady, thumping timekeeping, keyboardist and organ player Ståle Storløkken’s rich and uncompromising layers– they give you sounds and rhythm structures that have made grown men and women cry and laugh in joy. Elephant9 find inspiration in music that pushes the envelope, which has made music journalists dig deep for fitting descriptions. The circular melodic themes of Tangerine Dream have been mentioned, so has the blazing, phasing world of Jimi Hendrix. Other reviewers have namedropped John Coltrane, Deep Purple, Soft Machine, King Crimson and Fela Kuti – all artists who have in common that they disregarded the rules and have stood the test of time because of that. Sex Magick Wizards is a Norwegian-Sámi quartet blending psychedelic rock, free improvisation and joik into hypnotic, ritualistic soundscapes. For years they have stormed Europe’s underground and experimental music scenes, earning acclaim for intense and unpredictable live performances.
The double album "Suola ja Noaidi" (The Thief and the Shaman) draws on themes of colonisation, weaponised religion and Sámi resilience. Working from this cultural material, Sex Magick Wizards have created a double album combining traditional joik elements with their signature experimental rock sound and freeform avant-garde improvisation. By combining fragments of Northern Sámi from the original poem with new lyrics in both English and Northern Sámi and focusing more heavily on vocals, the band creates a highly distinctive sonic language rarely heard within experimental rock. The album also contains a new interpretation of an old traditional joik from guitarist/singer/joiker Viktor Bomstad’s childhood home, Ivgorášša.
The three earlier albums released by the band "Eroto Comatose Lucidity (FBR 2019) and "Your Bliss My Joy" (Rune Grammofon, 2021) & "Death Grip" (Nice Things Records, 2024) has also attracted a lot of attention, and the band has slowly gained a reputation for its energetic, improvisatory, genre- and mind bending concerts on the european experimental rock scene.

I recently listened to "Pale Blue Dot" by #dreamtheater and really liked the #music [1].
I didn't really pay attention to the lyrics, although the phrase "... to save us from ourselves" caught my attention.
Today I came across the full lyrics [2] and after this year's summer of #drought here in #Europe they hit hard. Excerpt:

This morning's #workout #music is from Xavier Díaz-Latorre playing compositions from Bach, Telemann and Weiss. He does this one hour performance all from memory as far as I can tell. Impressive. I first got into Lute music in the mid 70s via #progRock bands I discovered in elementary school. Primarily Focus, but also Jethro Tull. I recognize several of the themes here from Jan Akkerman's contributions. Good stuff.
