Review: Skilhunt M200 v4 - an outstanding everyday carry flashlight with 18650 battery and magnetic charging

The Skilhunt M200 v4 is a midsize everyday carry flashlight powered by an 18650 Li-ion rechargeable battery. It has a side switch, a magnetic tailcap, USB-magnetic charging, a very low lowest mode, and a choice of LEDs including one with excellent color quality and another with very long throw distance. Its form factor and magnetic charging have drawn comparisons to Olight's Baton Pro series, but the choice of LEDs and use of standard batteries provide the M200 with a significant advantage.

Skilhunt joins the bespoke LED club with the high-CRI SL-F50

This hasn't been officially announced on their site yet, but they sent me one and they didn't say not to talk about it, so here it is.

It's a 6V 5mm square quad-die emitter without a dome. It seems similar to the Noctigon NTG50 and Fireflies FFL5009R, but not identical as those LEDs have phosphor covering the space between dies.

Claimed color rendering index is 95+ with R9 (deep red) of 80+ and 5000K color temperature. Measured CRI is 95.8 with R9 of 86.2 and R12 (deep blue) of 83.6. CCT is 5020K with Duv of 0.0018 (very slight green tint).

In this small textured reflector, there's a bit of tint shift across the beam and a slightly dimmer area in the middle of the hotspot. I don't think either is problematic when illuminating anything but a white wall. Those issues wouldn't be present at all in a textured TIR optic.

Just received my Sofirn SP10 Pro, which is my first Andúril torch.

That’s it, this torch has ruined all other torches for me. I can’t imagine ever going back to non-Andúril torches.

I (only now) understand the meaning of “moonlight” mode. Ramping (especially smooth) makes so much sense.

Emitter swap: Luminus SFT40 4000K high-CRI into a Skilhunt M200 v3

Kaidomain sold a handful of these LEDs last fall and I made the mistake of buying only two. Rumor has it they were engineering samples, and may never be produced in large quantities.

Unlike the 3000K model, efficiency is not much worse than the low-CRI SFT40. I see 1400 lumens from this flashlight, and 250m throw. The increased throw over the original 519A is most welcome. Color rendering index is 92, and R9 (deep red rendering) is 71, which are a bit lower than the 3000K. That's probably responsible for the higher efficiency.

I noticed a broken bond wire after I took this picture. I'm glad it has extras.

Meanwhile, a cheaper brand like Rovyvon uses standard USB-C chargers and in some cases can use AAA along with an integral rechargeable battery. I don’t want to be stuck at my middle-of-nowhere farm in New Mexico waiting a week or more (Amazon, for example, averages 2 weeks shipping time) for a replacement charger when I can grab a standard USB-C and plug a light in or pop in a commonly found battery like 18650, CR123A, AA, or AAA and be good to go. #edc #gear #flashlights

There’s a few reasons to not like Olight flashlights, but the thing that gets me is that they use proprietary chargers (sometimes), and their proprietary chargers do not work across all their flashlights. Thus, the charger for the Baton 4 can’t be used to charge the Odin or the Seeker 4. Even if one takes apart the flashlight to charge the batteries, they are odd sizes: 16340 or 21700, not the more common 18650 or CR123A seen in other higher voltage devices. #edc #gear #flashlights

Saw a thread on Reddit where people were sharing wear-damaged pens from pockets. Mine aren't too bad.

The Hongdian M2 fountain pen has taken the most damage with a good chunk of its finish removed.

The Fisher Bullet rollerball has some scrapes but isn't too bad.

The Titanium+Copper Emisar D3AA flashlight isn't showing any wear at all.

All of these go in my watch/5th pants pocket. They don't need to be pretty as long as they work.

Updating flashlight firmware, which is something normal and sane people do on a Saturday night, right?

This omnifixo is the best I've found at holding things in place but even it can't apply enough pressure on the pogo pins to properly engage them and make a solid connection. However, with it doing most of the alignment I can hold it in place with one hand easily while running avrdude to backup and write the new firmware with the other.

My recent flashlight purchases were small ones that use 14500 and 16340 cells. Love them, and they're very pocketable for EDC.

For actual use during evening walks, I find them a bit challenging to hold though, because they are so tiny. I guess I'm just not used to them yet.
