"Two FBI agents, one from New York’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, told a former member of Extinction Rebellion NYC they wanted to ask him about the group at his home upstate on Friday, an attorney for the group told The Intercept. The visit followed a prior attempt to reach him at his old address.
"The FBI’s apparent probe of Extinction Rebellion NYC comes as the Justice Department ramps up its surveillance of activists protesting immigration enforcement and the Trump administration creates secret lists of domestic enemies under Trump’s National Security Presidential #Memorandum7, or #NSPM7." 'I believe this to be a significant escalation of the criminal legal system against #XR and find it very troubling,' said Ron Kuby, the Extinction Rebellion attorney. 'This is usually the way we find out an actual investigation is underway and is often followed by other visits and other actions.'
"The former Extinction Rebellion member, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear for his safety, said that the visit came after a phone call in January from a special agent that he assumed was a scam.
" 'I was skeptical the phone call was really from the FBI, but after I declined to speak with the agent, she said that she was standing outside my door,' he said. She was actually at the activist’s former address, which he said made him additionally dubious. But last week, when the agents showed up at his current address, he said he saw the agent’s business card through his door."

Excerpt: "Amandla Thomas-Johnson had attended a protest targeting companies that supplied weapons to Israel at a #CornellUniversity job fair in 2024 for all of five minutes, but the action got him banned from campus. When President Donald Trump assumed office and issued a series of executive orders targeting students who protested in support of #Palestinians, Thomas-Johnson and his friend Momodou Taal went into hiding."Google informed Thomas-Johnson via a brief email in April that it had already shared his metadata with the Department of Homeland Security, as The Intercept previously reported. But the full extent of the information the agency sought — including usernames, addresses, itemized list of services, including any IP masking services, telephone or instrument numbers, subscriber numbers or identities, and credit card and bank account numbers — was not previously known.
" 'I’d already seen the subpoena request that Google and Meta had sent to Momodou [Taal], and I knew that he had gotten in touch with a lawyer and the lawyer successfully challenged that,' Thomas-Johnson said. 'I was quite surprised to see that I didn’t have that opportunity.'
"The subpoena provides no justification for why ICE is asking for this information, except that it’s required 'in connection with an investigation or inquiry relating to the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.' In the subpoena, ICE requests that Google not 'disclose the existence of this summons for indefinite period of time.'
Thomas-Johnson, who is British, believes that ICE requested that information to track and eventually detain him — but he had already fled to Geneva, Switzerland, and is now in Dakar, Senegal."The #ElectronicFrontierFoundation, which is representing Thomas-Johnson, and the #ACLU of Northern California sent a letter to Google, #Amazon, #Apple, #Discord, #Meta, #Microsoft, and #Reddit last week calling on tech companies to resist similar subpoenas in the future from #DHS without court intervention. The letter asks the companies to provide users with as much notice as possible before complying with a subpoena to give them the opportunity to fight it, and to resist gag orders that would prevent the #TechCompanies from informing targets that a subpoena was issued.
" 'Your promises to protect the privacy of users are being tested right now. As part of the federal government’s unprecedented campaign to target critics of its conduct and policies, agencies like DHS have repeatedly demanded access to the identities and information of people on your services,' the letter reads.
" 'Based on our own contact with targeted users, we are deeply concerned your companies are failing to challenge unlawful surveillance and defend user privacy and speech.' "

AI slop brainrot == “Newspeak” (of “1984”)In the famous George Orwell novel 1984, “Big Brother” was the mass surveillance system, and “Newspeak” was the ruling regime’s method of trying to simplify spoken language so as to limit the range of thoughts that people were able to think. It was a highly simplified language that optimized reverence of “Big Brother” (the political elite) and hatred of “the others.” Fascists have always want to make “Big Brother” a realty, and AI gives them a new tool with which to do it. It does both things at once.
AI could do the mass surveillance, with a tireless machine monitoring every conversation everywhere and raising flags in law enforcement agencies as soon as you start talking about something that might threaten the political elites, dispatching police to arrest you and keep you in a black-site awaiting a fair trial that will never come.
But it can also simplify the very language that people use for discourse. If you are a fluent and literate person, you may have noticed that articles written by AI tend to be very monotonous. Now imagine that tone, that writing style, being deliberately simplified by training it on the corpus of all interviews on Fox News, and the corpus of all sermons by mega-church pastors. Could you imagine the effect that would have on people who become addicted to AI? It is exactly what Orwell warned us about in his novel.
AI, like any technology can be used for good or bad. I think we need to understand that “Big Brother” is really the end goal of the people who want to use AI for bad, for the clique of political elites to enrich themselves at the expense of all other people. It seems to me the bad guys who actually want to become “Big Brother” of the story of “1984” are two steps ahead of everyone else right now. That should concern you, it should concern everyone.
Is this all a just conspiracy theory, or unhinged divination? Did we not just learn from the Epstein papers of a global conspiracy to traffic many thousands of young children into sex slavery for billionaires, implicating literally hundreds if not thousands of political/business elites? This isn’t “Pizza-Gate” we’re talking about here. At this point, I think everyone is entitled to assume the worst of the highest-ranking government and industry officials.

"The #WashingtonPost reports that a retired #Philadelphia man, Jon, 67, found himself in the government’s crosshairs after he emailed a lead prosecutor at the Department of Homeland Security, #JosephDernbach, who was handling the deportation case of an #AfghanRefugee, identified as H, asking him to consider that the man’s life was in danger from the #Taliban.
" 'Mr. Dernbach, don’t play Russian roulette with H’s life,' Jon wrote from his #GMail account. 'Err on the side of caution. There’s a reason the US government along with many other governments don’t recognise the Taliban. Apply principles of common sense and decency.'
"Later that day, Jon received an email from #Google notifying him that an administrative subpoena had been sent to them from the Department of Homeland Security 'compelling the release of information related to your Google Account.' Federal agencies can issue such subpoenas without an order from a judge or grand jury, and Google gave Jon, who withheld his last name to protect his family from the government, one week to challenge it.
"Laws are supposed to restrict the use of administrative subpoenas, but DHS has used the tool against dissent protected under the #FirstAmendment to the #Constitution. Jon could not find who in the agency issued the #subpoena, let alone a record of it to show an attorney.
"Days later, DHS agents showed up at Jon’s door. A naturalized U.S. citizen originally from the #UK, Jon was worried about potential violence. The agents showed him a copy of the email and asked to see his side of the story. They didn’t know about the administrative subpoena but said they received orders to interview Jon by #DHS headquarters in Washington, D.C.
"Eventually, the agents agreed that Jon had committed no crimes after he told them he found Dernbach’s email address through a simple Google search. Jon secured pro bono representation by #ACLU attorneys, who argue that the government is violating a statute that limits how administrative subpoenas can be used for '#ImmigrationEnforcement' and that the government targeted Jon for #ProtectedSpeech.
" 'It doesn’t take that much to make people look over their shoulder, to think twice before they speak again,' said Nathan Freed Wessler, one of Jon’s attorneys. 'That’s why these kinds of subpoenas and other actions—the visits—are so pernicious. You don’t have to lock somebody up to make them reticent to make their voice heard. It really doesn’t take much, because the power of the federal government is so overwhelming.'
"Both #Google and #Meta received a record number of subpoenas in the United States during the first half of 2025 as Trump’s second term began, with Google receiving 28,622, a 15 percent increase over the previous six months. Jon was fortunate to have his case picked up by the ACLU and later reported on by a national media outlet. How many others in the U.S. haven’t been so lucky and face legal challenges for exercising their right to free speech?"
