  11. Big update to ‘Form & Number: A History of Mathematical Beauty’: the PDFs are now *tagged* (plus various minor improvements).

    A #TaggedPDF contains hidden extra semantic information to assist screen-reading software etc., including alt text for diagrams+images (in the case of ‘F&N’, 552 pieces of alt text were required, some quite lengthy).

    The new version is available (#OpenAccess as always) at: archive.org/details/cain_forma

    Feedback from users of screen readers would be very welcome!

    Creating this version has been possible because of the ongoing LaTeX tagging project [latex3.github.io/tagging-proje] (thank you to the LaTeX team and other contributors!). I have been adapting my own #LuaLaTeX styles [codeberg.org/ajcain/minos] to use the new interfaces.

  15. Yves-Marie André's (1675–1764) [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yves_Mar] ‘Essay on Beauty’ (‘Essai sur le beau’, 1741) was an important work of 18th-century aesthetics. In the article on beauty in the 2nd volume (1752) of the ‘Encylopédie’, Denis Diderot praised André's system as the best he knew, elevating it above the work of Plato, Augustine, Wolff, Crousaz, Shaftesbury.

    In 2010, I released a #CreativeCommons-licensed annotated English translation [archive.org/details/EssayOnBea]. I have just made an update: the PDF is now an accessible #TaggedPDF.

    (The LaTeX tagging system is still under development [latex3.github.io/tagging-proje], but I have been adapting my LaTeX styles to be tagging-compatible.)

    Although I was a much less practised typographer 16 years ago, I have left the overall design of ‘Essay on Beauty’ unchanged, contenting myself with minor improvements offered by an updated version of the Baskervald font, ensuring that line-end hyphenations follow the OUP standard, and a few other localized improvements.

  16. It is no coincidence that the mandorla — the almond-shaped halo around Christ or the Virgin Mary — mirrors the vulva’s form. Named after the Italian for “almond,” it symbolises the threshold between worlds, the sacred gateway through which divine light and incarnation enter the human realm.

  17. any recommendations for modernist depictions of agriculture and food production?

    i've included some example images below.

    some keywords:
    * mechanized agriculture
    * industrial farming
    * industrial food production
    * farm as factory
    * farm modernization
    * chemical agriculture
    * green revolution

    i've got the following materials on my to-read list:

    * "every farm a factory: the industrial ideal in american agriculture" by deborah fitzgerald
    * Ch. 8 of "seeing like a state": "Taming Nature: An Agriculture of Legibility and Simplicity" by james c. scott
    * "Farming according to 'the laws of beauty': Aesthetics and agriculture" by david cooper (academia.edu/14380031/Farming_)
    * "the american technological sublime" by david nye (not sure if it has anything about agriculture specifically)
    * "the machine in the garden: technology and the pastoral" by leo marx (update: i've now skimmed this work and it seems to be concerned with an earlier era, not the high modernist period)

    if you're familiar with any written works looking at this kind of aesthetic specifically, i'd love to hear about it.

    also, if you have suggestions for archives (online or irl) that might have more materials like this, i'm all ears.

  18. Following my earlier posts on historical aesthetic judgements of Euler's identity, I just found another one, in Constance Reid's popular mathematics book ‘From Zero to Infinity’ [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_Zer], where it is called ‘elegant’. This appears on p.165 of the 1964 third edition. Can anyone confirm if it appears in the first or second editions? (1955, 1960)

    I am still interested in other aesthetic judgements of Euler's identity before 1988 (I know of few, although one more than I knew of yesterday), and especially before 1940 (I currently know of none).

    Incidentally, as printed in the third edition of Reid's book, the equation would evoke a shudder from any typographer (see attached image).

  19. Today's post from @paysmaths @Theoremoftheday was on #EulersIdentity or #EulersEquation \(e^{i\pi} + 1 = 0\) (also given in various equivalent forms), which prompts me to talk about a little historical mystery.

    Euler's identity is often held up as as exemplar of mathematical beauty, or called the most beautiful or most elegant equation in mathematics.

    But when I was researching my book ‘Form & Number: A History of Mathematical Beauty’ [archive.org/details/cain_forma], I was unable to find *any* aesthetic judgement of the equation before the 1940 book ‘Mathematics and the Imagination’ by Kasner & Newman [archive.org/details/mathematic], where it is called ‘elegant’ (p.103). The earliest explicit judgements of it as *beautiful* that I found are in essays by Le Lionnais in the late 1940s.

    Does anyone know of any aesthetic judgements of Euler's equations before 1940? (I know of earlier non-aesthetic judgements like ‘mysterious’ or ‘paradoxical’.)

    (The history of aesthetic judgements of Euler's equation is on pp.835–9 of ‘Form & Number’, #OpenAccess at the link above.)

    ...Chris Brown -- Back to Sleep
    youtu.be/OQLuhelCaDQ?si=xdbJNE

    The songs do differ, so it's not a case of plagiarism, but it's quite clear that "Crash" draws on the older song.

    Three lines of thought came to mind.

    In the first place, I wondered - not for the first time - how my feelings about Kpop would change if I listened to more western popular music.

    A quick look at the Wikipedia entry on "Back to Sleep" made it clear to me how well known the song had been on its release in 2015. I felt taken aback; am I the only "Crash" listener not to have been aware of the songs' similarities? What would have been my initial reaction to "Crash" had I heard the Chris Brown song first?

    Of course Kpop recycles western popular music, just as western popular music in the past (certainly) and in the present (probably) recycles both its own products and music from other sources. Consequently, my feelings are not those of the viewer abashed when the painting one has admired turns out to be a forgery, but rather those of a reader who, on turning from a mass market paperback version of a beloved text to the annotated scholarly edition, discovers all the sources and allusions previously unnoticed.

    These thoughts on background knowledge reminded me of a consideration about our responses to music and art in general: just as perception is never simply an impression via the senses on a tabula rasa, so we never look at the visual arts with an "innocent eye" or listen to music without pre-existing concepts, sensibilities, and memories. That tabula full of ideas, far from being an obstacle to our disinterested appreciation, is what what makes our aesthetic experience possible. Without the tabula plena, we would be hard put to recognize the art and the music within our visual and aural experience.

    My final thought concerned the lyrics and visuals of the Chris Brown MV. "Crash" was a B side for which no MV was made, but even so one can see from the stage how it differed in feel from the erotically charged American video. In addition, the Korean lyrics have nothing like the explicit sexual language of "Back to Sleep". As such, a comparison reveals a striking difference between South Korea and the USA with regard to the representation of sex in popular culture. Whether one is "better" than the other is a question that interests me less than why these two cultures differ so much in this respect.

    I have often reflected on the interminglings of the main three normative sciences. In one of my earliest meditations I saw Beauty, Goodness, and Truth as the intersecting circles of a Venn diagram, with the “summum bonum” the central cell.

    As far as our ability to approach our object from our origin without, perfect knowledge of the Good would require us to know all the consequences of our contemplated actions while perfect knowledge of the True would require us to know all the axiom sets which never beget a contradiction.

    As far as I could tell, and as far as I could see deciding with the empirical tests and theorem provers I could morally and mathematically envision devising, the above two tasks exceed the talents of mortal humans and all their technological extensions.

    But when it comes to Beauty, our form of being appears to have an inborn sense to guide us on our quest to the highest good. That way through beauty to our ultimate goal I called the “human‑hearted path”.
