Agency recruiters can be a real help in a job search, as long as you know how the relationship works. They're usually paid by the hiring company when someone they put forward gets the job, so their focus is filling roles rather than finding you one. That isn't a bad thing, it just helps to set your expectations. A few things that make it work better: • Ask to be told before your CV goes anywhere. A good recruiter will name the company and get your OK first. Being put forward to the same employer twice, by two agencies or by an agency and yourself, can get awkward. • Keep a simple note of who has sent you where, and when. • Be straight about your salary range, location and notice period. Vague answers lead to calls about roles that were never going to fit. • Ask what the advert doesn't say: why the role is open, how many stages there are, and what the hiring manager cares about most. • Ask for feedback after interviews. Recruiters often hear more than you would directly. • If a role isn't right, say so early and say why. It helps them send you better matches.
