Today's lectionary didn't get the memo about the National Day of Prayer. The Psalms are lament. Leviticus measures holiness by how we treat the immigrant. Matthew tells us not to worry. A look at what our tradition already quietly accomplishes at: https://notd.io/n/DayofPrayer2026 #NationalDayofPrayer #Prayer #Lectionary #TraditionRemixed #FunctioningFaith #EpiscopalChurch

Thursday evening, I was blessed to attend a lecture by the Rt. Rev. Mariann Budde. It was a wonderful experience and one I am still processing. I’m sure I’ll have more to say at another time, for right now I think it is sufficient and important to say how blessed the #EpiscopalChurch is in our leadership and our community. May God continue to bless us for a long, long time!

Today (3 November) the church remembers Richard Hooker, a 16th century priest & an influential theologian of the (first) Elizabethan age. Hooker’s magnus opus, The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity, included in Book Five, a massive defense of the #BCP against Puritan detractors (which we might do well to revisit today). Where Hooker has, perhaps, lost the #EpiscopalChurch lies with his view that the Church & the State were inseparable aspects of a single commonwealth. Despite this his perspective on the Eucharist reflects that of many modern #Episcopalians “Let it therefore be sufficient for me presenting myself at the Lord’s table to know what there I receive from him, without searching or inquiring of the manner how Christ performeth his promise, […] what these elements are in themselves it skilleth not, it is enough that to me which take them they are the body & blood of Christ.”

On October 28 the #EpiscopalChurch celebrates the feast of St. Simon & St. Jude, two of less well-known apostles of #Jesus Today’s #Gospel is John 15:17-27 & the verse that stands out to me is the very first one: “I give you these commands so that you may love one another.”
Love one another. It sounds so simple, yet it is complicated & difficult to do. Scripture offers us guidance that is often contradictory, or seems to be at cross purposes. Love can be that way too as anyone who has a sibling, parent, or child knows. Perhaps that is why this passage was chosen for the lesson on the feast of the patron saint of lost causes. Loving one another feels impossible. If, however, we put our faith in #God we know that it is not impossible. We just haven’t figured out how to do it. I think the key is in embracing the complexities & contradictions, in knowing that we aren’t all alike nor do we always agree, & understanding that despite our differences we are all God’s children & family.

On 25 October, the #EpiscopalChurch remembers the #FiberArtist #Dorcas so today I am reflecting on a passage from Acts 9:36-42
For me, as someone who knits & crochets, Dorcas is a role model. Not because Peter raised her from the dead, but because of who and how she was in life both before and after death. Scripture tells us in verse 36 “Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity.” And in verse 39b “All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them.” I make clothing, well, mostly hats, & I struggle to let them go. I have been told, repeatedly, that making & giving away is a waste of time & money to the point that I act that way. Dorcas stands in silent rebuke of that attitude. I have been blessed with a talent/passion (& wonderful materials). I am called to share both more freely than I do.

October 18 is the #EpiscopalChurch celebrates the #FeastDay of #StLuke the Evangelist, companion of St. Paul, & a physician of the Church. Today’s #Gospel reading is Luke 4:14-21
Having completed a #SoulShop workshop yesterday about #SuicidePrevention for church leaders, the verses that stand out to me today are 18-19 about bringing good news to the poor, freeing captives, freeing the oppressed, helping the blind to see, & proclaiming the year of God’s favor (these verses also apply to the #NoKings events today). What #Jesus is saying, & doing, in these verses is giving people #Hope That is a very important thing. Hope keeps us alive. Hope keeps us going, working towards & praying for a tomorrow when God’s promises for our lives & the world are manifest on earth as in heaven. We, as members of the #JesusMovement are called to have Hope & to share it with all others, freely, without judgement or expectation, as our Redeemer did & does.
How will you share Hope with someone else today?

On October 14, the #EpiscopalChurch remembers Joseph Schereschewsky, Bishop, Missionary, translator, & poster person for perseverance.
Born a Lithuanian Jew on May 6, 1831, he accepted Jesus as Messiah, emigrated to the U.S., graduated from General Theological Seminary in 1857, was ordained, answered the call for helpers in #China , became the Bishop of Shanghai in 1877, founded St. John’s University in Shanghai, suffered sunstroke leading to paralysis, resigned as bishop in 1883, & moved to Tokyo in 1897 where he continued translating the Bible into Wenli, completing his work prior to his death in October 15, 1906. #DisabilityAwareness #Faith #Disability
After his illness in 1881, he typed more than 2,000 pages using only one finger of his paralyzed hand. Of this period he is reported to have said: "I have sat in this chair for over twenty years. It seemed very hard at first. But God knew best. He kept me for the work for which I am best fitted."
-
#DidYouKnow that not all the national churches of the #AnglicanCommunion commemorate the same holy men & women?
For instance, today the #EpiscopalChurch remembers Joseph Schereschewsky, bishop, missionary, translator, & poster person for perseverance (more on him in another toot), while over the weekend UK churches commemorated Edith Cavell, a nurse serving in Belgium during World War 1 who was executed by the Germans in 1915 (more about her in another toot, or more probably, a blog post/podcast episode later).

Prayer for #Indigenous Communities
God, our comfort and consolation, we lament the 🍊 administration’s decision not to recognize #IndigenousPeoplesDay and the pain and anger this has caused in Indigenous communities. Help our indigenous siblings to remember that they are beloved by you no matter what the powers and principalities dictate, and help your church be a strong ally. Amen.

Anybody using #NOTD ? What are your thoughts (as a reader or a publisher)?
I’m considering starting a stream or blog or podcast covering being #Episcopalian & the cloud of witnesses/lesser feasts of the #EpiscopalChurch and #AnglicanCommunion (think #LentMadness type information but all year round & without the brackets/voting).

The #EpiscopalChurch remembers Philip, disciple, evangelist, & deacon on 11 October. So today’s #Gospel reading is Luke 24:13-27 (rather than Matthew). In these passages, the disciples tell a fellow traveler about what has happened to #Jesus from his arrest through crucifixion & the discovery of the empty tomb. They don’t recognize who they are speaking with, even when he describes how Scripture pointed to everything that had occurred.
For me today’s message is that we don’t always realize when God is speaking to us. The Divine rarely shows up wearing a name tag or a t-shirt saying “God” Just because we do not recognize the Divine, doesn’t mean that they are not present & speaking/teaching us. This passage reminds us that the Divine can be anywhere, speaking through anyone. Our challenge is to hear God whenever & wherever God speaks.
How will you hear God today?

On 10 October the #EpiscopalChurch commemorates #VidaDuttonScudder (1861-1954) an educator, writer, lesbian, & activist in the #SocialGospel movement. A professor of literature at Wellesley College from 1892-1927, she was also a founder of Dennison House (a women’s settlement house) & the Episcopal Church Socialist League as well as an organizer of the Federal Labor Union. After retiring from teaching, she extensively studied Franciscans & publishing a book in 1931 established her as a leading Franciscan scholar of the time. She also received an LLD degree from Nashotah House in 1942.
Her #collect is:
Most gracious God, you sent your beloved Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Raise up in your church witnesses who, after the example of your servant Vida Dutton Scudder, stand firm in proclaiming the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Today (3 October) we celebrate John Raleigh Mott, the founder of the #YMCA in the U.S. This commemoration was added to the calendar of the #EpiscopalChurch in 2022 & I admit, it is not one I choose to recognize. Honestly, we don’t really need to celebrate another whyte man creating another boys’ club. Also, he is usually referred to as the “founder of the YMCA” which is not entirely accurate. The YMCA actually began in London, England, UK 20 years before Mott was born. I suppose it might be worthwhile recognizing Mott as a founder & the first president of the World Student Christian Foundation #WSCF (a title he held until 1920) which is an ecumenical organization for young people that still operates around the globe today although not in the U.S. (there is currently a movement to establish a #WSCF-US ). http://www.wscftrustees.org/ Mott did win the #NobelPeacePrize in 1946 along with economist Emily Greene Balch who, quite honestly, is a better choice for veneration despite being a Quaker.

Several parishes in my area are coming together for a #Pride in the Park #Pentecost Potluck this Sunday, June 8. We’ll begin by celebrating a #Eucharist together at 4:30 then enjoy a potluck meal (attendees are asked to bring a side or desert to share) and some social time.
I’m looking forward to getting to know some of my fellow #DioNeb #Episcopalians and hope that this will be the first of many joint events. We could all use more face to face community opportunities not to mention letting our light shine in public spaces where folks might not otherwise realize the #EpiscopalChurch is. All are welcome!
