  1. "Days after #Hebrew Union #College graduated its final #rabbinical class in #Cincinnati, a new #Jewish #seminary has its eyes on the #school’s #campus — and wants the state of #Ohio to bestow the prize on them.

The College for Contemporary #Judaism, which aims to become a new home for liberal #rabbinicalstudents in the Midwest, on Thursday added its voice to a lawsuit against #HUC brought by Ohio #AttorneyGeneral #DaveYost. The state’s suit claims that HUC, the #Reform #rabbinicalschool, violated state #nonprofit law and misled its donors by shuttering its historic Cincinnati campus this year.

In its motion to intervene, the new college argues that it should be the rightful steward of HUC’s campus, as well as all other Cincinnati assets of the #Reform movement mainstay. They include the #KlauLibrary, the #AmericanJewishArchives, the #SkirballMuseum and hundreds of millions of dollars given by donors who believed HUC would “permanently” remain in the city."

    youtube.com/watch?v=I3v_eXawx4s

What happens when you study the Bible academically at seminary level?

"In this video, I share 3 shocking discoveries that completely transformed my understanding of #Christianity. As someone with a PhD in #Christian Origins and an MDiv, I reveal what #seminaries actually teach about the Bible that most Christians never hear."

  5. William Arnot, Scottish minister, objects to the proverb, “charity begins at home”. It’s used not just for food but even Christian missions to non-Christian nations. The idea is a half-truth, and thus a whole falsehood. Charity begins but does not end at home.

When can we stop pretending there is a valid point to be made by these proverbs?

How can you encourage Christian missions?

  8. If anybody is interested in #seminary education, consider joining Eden Seminary! It's a privilege to be teaching in the halls where Reinhold #Niebuhr , Walter #Brueggemann and other eminent scholars have walked. But it's an honor to be teaching many of the great students from around the world, many of whom will become leaders of the future. The first event is coming up! Go to: eden.edu/visit

    #animated #documentary

Join Satan as he shares Bible secrets, #secrets the students' #pastor learned at #Christian #seminary but is afraid to share. Thankfully, Satan's not afraid of losing his job.

Darkly comedic, but thoroughly researched, SATAN'S GUIDE TO THE BIBLE is a fascinating journey into the secrets of the world's best-selling #book.

  11. At my first convocation at #Eden Theological #Seminary! It was a joy to listen to distinguished alumna, Rev. Dr. Traci Blackmon (M.Div. '09, D.D. '15) preach! With Associate Dean Julie Jennings and Professor Ben Hartley, we were installed as members of the administration and faculty. I'm so honored and privileged to be a member of the Eden family! #WeAreEden #history #theology #church #UCC @theologidons @histodons @religiousstudies #STL

  12. #Christian YouTubers vs #SATAN

When ‪@SATANSGUIDE‬ took over a Sunday School class, an army of Christian YouTubers including ‪@InspiringPhilosophy‬ ‪@TheCounselofTrent‬ ‪@MikeWinger‬ took umbrage with the #scholars revealing #seminary secrets. Satan joins me with a few new scholars to defend the popular (and seemingly #faith-shaking) #Documentary.

  14. If you have friends that still consider themselves to be #Christians, but are either tormented because they fear they may go to #hell, or are going around trying to convert other people because thery think those people will go to hell, you might want to send them this. And if they ask, "Why was I never taught this in church?", I would answer "that's a really good question, since all preachers that went to a decent #bible college or #seminary should have known all this, yet they continue to preach hell. I wonder what else they know that they aren't telling?"

Warning: If you are an #exchristian this MIGHT be a bit triggering, because the author still is hanging onto his #Christianity at this point, but once you start seeing how you've been lied to in #church ypu start to notice other things as well, and I suspect given enough time that might happen with him.

  16. Online #Seminary is a different experience.

In one of my asynchronous courses, the prof doesn't lecture. He has canned 10-25pg PDFs of lecture notes that we're to read each week, alongside course readings and assignments. It's certainly not how I would teach, but at the end of the day, it's async: he would've just been canning videos anyway.

My other course is synchronous. So I join in by Teams, and I see my face plastered on the wall of the classroom while half are online and half in-person.

  17. Hey team. Those of you who went through #Christian #seminary or are involved with admissions. I've got a few mini-essays to write for my application. Does theology grad school aim differently? Should I be writing as a reverent servant, ready for humble instruction? Or should I be going hard self-cheerleader like a cover letter or typical grad school application?

Worried I might be tooting my own horn too much in what I've written so far. But also worried if I go too soft I'll get sidelined. Thoughts?

  19. I am in the early steps of discerning my call to #ministry.

I'm 40yo. The #Anglican tradition requires #Seminary training ~3yrs. My day job is good (both ways -- we write software for food banks.) In a perfect world, I would continue to walk down both paths throughout my calling, which means online, part-time studies. I may be 50 by the time I finish my studies, even if I start immediately. I don't need to be completely done my studies to be ordained, but the first step needs to be taken.

  21. Last week I #wrote a paper in #seminary on #repentance, which got me thinking. What does genuine repentance look like and how do we know if we’ve done it?

I’ve spent far too much time committing to “never do that thing again” but going back to it day after day.

  23. My second son #leftthechurch and I wanted to know why. He shared what information he had about the #history of the church and before too long, I had read all of that and so much more. It was a terrible time for me and I felt quite #suicidal. I didn't know who I was if, after 39 years, I was no longer 'Sister Bodie', the #bishop's wife, the branch president's wife, the #seminary teacher... #faithcrisis #mormonfaithcrisis #faithdeconstruction #darknightofthesoul wasmormon.org/profile/jean-bod

  25. CW: Ordination stuff

It's a common mistake of 20something seminarians to think the whole ordination process should be about realizing and affirming their "call." I did it myself.

But the institution doesn't give a damn about calls. The institutional ordination process is about achieving the qualifications to join a professional guild.

Their interest is in protecting the guild, not in promoting your self-actualization. Proceed accordingly.

  26. Took New Testament Foundations 1 this morning and now I'm prepping for (and maybe taking, who knows) a take-home essay exam for Foundations of Christian Spirituality. Old Testament Foundations 1 is Monday, Church Histories 1 is Tuesday, and I've got a research paper due Tuesday, too. Elementary Hebrew 1 is a week from tomorrow. Almost through my first semester of #seminary!

  29. Over the weekend I did the final three weeks of reading for my self directed study so that I could focus on my final project this week... so of course I would get sick and feel completely exhausted and unable to work on the project. #seminary

  30. Here's my #introduction. I'm a progressive person of #faith, president of a #seminary (bsk.edu) where I also am professor of media studies and Christian education. I own faithlab.com, podcast at faithelement.net. Besides enjoying #art and #photography, I drive an #EV (#ID4), collect @vintagemac gear, and am a budget #audiophile. My free time includes smoking food on my #kamadojoe smoker/grill and reading #sciencefiction.

  31. So, I guess I need to do some sort of #introduction here:
    Born in Sleepy Hollow, #NewYork
    Lived in south #Texas, #Arkansas (#Razorbacks), north Texas. #University of Arkansas, #trombonist, #teacher, #seminary in #Wisconsin, served the #EpiscopalChurch in #SouthDakota, #NorthDakota, #Minnesota. Left #TEC in 2018 for the #ChurchofEngland serving in #Norwich #ncfc.
My loves: #classicalmusic, #birds, #RSPB, #parrots, #Iona, #Scotland. Used to love #hiking, but health will not let me anymore. (cont.)
