The Cassandras were right (and other politics links)
A very strong point:
Last December: “Call them the Cassandras: the people—mostly not white and male—who smelled the fascism all over Trump from jump street. Why were they “alarmists,” and how did “anti-alarmism” become cool?”
The “we can always tell who’s trans” panic is going just great:
May: “[Trans man] Strobel was using the bathroom that many conservative lawmakers and anti-trans pundits want to force him to use — and he got arrested anyway, seemingly because of the panic surrounding gendered bathrooms.”
“The couple, who are both cis women, said their afternoon ended when hotel security searched the women’s restroom and allegedly asked them to show their identification to prove their sex. “
“He believed that Marie, who is living with dementia, was a man dressed as a woman. Bailey knocked Marie to the ground and threw her into a wheelie bin before applying pressure to the lid, CCTV footage showed.” (He’s in jail. Good. Now where are the consequences for the people who convinced him it was okay to assault a frail old grandparent in the first place?)
June: ““After seeing my license, he spent like 10 minutes questioning me on if my license was real before I explained to him that I am a transgender woman,” Ripper said. “It has to say ‘M’ legally.””
Follow-up: Here she is talking about it on Youtube! Apparently not planned, she was just in the audience for comedian Ashley Gavin, who has a delightful back-and-forth with her about it.
Racism and general politics:
April: “In early December, Prieto was told to show up for an immigration check-in at an earlier date than ICE had initially requested and to bring his family. He complied. At the check-in, Prieto, Marcano, and Amalia were arrested. They weren’t provided with arrest warrants or any paperwork explaining why they were being apprehended. Amalia cried after the family was loaded into a van full of other parents and young children. “Why are you doing this?” Prieto asked the immigration agents. He recalled that an agent replied, “It’s a change of Administration. They pay us to deport you.”“
June: “At the hospital, Morris “informed a nurse and a security guard that he was a member of the famous Motown group the ‘Four Tops’, and that he had current security concerns due to stalkers and fans,”[…] An ER doctor decided to “remove him from oxygen and pursue a psychiatric evaluation instead, despite his clear symptoms of cardiac distress and significant medical history,” the lawsuit alleges. The lawsuit states “a security guard was instructed to ensure he was placed into a restraining jacket and/or a four-point restraint mechanism.”“
August: “Two leading specialist military papers, the Navy Times and Stars and Stripes, are reporting that there have been multiple attempts by sailors to jump overboard as poor conditions and mental stresses on the Lincoln reach the breaking point. The crew is in its ninth month at sea, and has spent 250 days consecutively without making land – a record for an aircraft carrier in modern times.“
“Baltimore has engineered a 68% drop in homicides since 2019, outpacing the national average—all while operating with 400 fewer officers. Here’s how the city debunked the myth that more police are the only answer to violent crime. “

The official, a unit chief who directly oversaw more than 100 employees who evaluated thousands of #ICE applicants, was so troubled by what he saw that he outlined these concerns not to his superiors, but in a formal #whistleblower complaint to the Office of #InspectorGeneral in the #DHS.

"Brno court [...] sentenced a former police officer to three and a half years in prison for a brutal assault on a Vietnamese national which took place in January 2009. The man later died of serious internal injuries" -- "if he had received timely medical attention, he could have survived despite having a ruptured spleen and severe internal bleeding" -- "what the police thought was heroin were actually packages of starch" -- "yelling that he hated the Vietnamese" -- "abuse of power" -- "died the next day of serious injuries" -- "“[...]did not provide any medical attention"" -- "Two other policemen, who were standing by but did not interfere, landed conditional sentences. I better not buy starch now! Are there any other foodstuffs that I should avoid buying if I don't want to be IMO killed by brutal assault by the brutal Czech regime? Flour? Sugar? Baking soda? Salt? Now a citizen is afraid to buy basic foodstuffs! I believe that is called terrorism!

How tight is the #RightToProtest?
From 418 arrests in 1977 to fresh clashes in Sydney: Debate over #Australia’s right to protest continues
"What many may not realise is that the right to protest in Australia is not protected by one simple law. It’s implied in the constitution under freedom of political communication and exists under international human rights law, which Australia has agreed to uphold. Only #Queensland, #Victoria and the #ACT explicitly protect the right to peaceful assembly, freedom of association and freedom of expression. And laws protecting the right to peaceful protest in Australia can be limited."
By Rhiannon Stevens
Sat 14 Feb, 2026" 'The day of the political street march is over,' Joh Bjelke-Petersen declared. 'Don’t bother to apply for a permit. You won’t get one. That’s government policy now.'
"A few weeks later, thousands of people defied then-Queensland premier Bjelke-Petersen’s proclamation and gathered in Brisbane for an #AntiUranium march.
"Ian Curr remembers an intense, unrelenting heat on that day nearly 50 years ago. It was 'boiling hot', the long-time #AntiNuclear activist says. So hot that when protesters sat on the road, arms linked in passive defiance, it was 'not very pleasant' because the tarmac was scorching. Other memories emerge from the haze: lines of police, three and four deep, surrounding protesters; a woman with tears streaming down her face who had just heard her partner was arrested.
"Fear swirled up spines and into the air. These were the years after the #Springbok tour #AntiApartheid protests had been violently suppressed.
"That afternoon in October 1977, 418 people were arrested and Queensland’s 'RightToMarch' movement quickly entered a new era. #CivilLiberties demonstrations continued until the ban — originally enacted to curb a growing anti-nuclear movement — was lifted two years later.
"Ross Gwyther was exhilarated seeing some 5,000 anti-nuclear marchers turn out that day. But the sensation was tempered by an 'intense fear because there’d already been many cases of #PoliceBrutality'.
"These were extraordinary times, as the Fitzgerald Inquiry would later attest. For Gwyther and many of the #ratbags, #activists and #CivilLibertarians of Queensland it was a defining moment. That era in Brisbane radicalised a lot of people, Gwyther says, who embarked on a lifetime of 'political activism, both through parliamentary politics or by grassroots politics'.
"These moments mark you, Curr says, turning to the events in Sydney this week. 'The people who saw that violence in Sydney, in 40 or 50 years, they will not forget it. In the same way I do not forget police brandishing batons and punching and throwing people into paddy wagons. It’s something you do not forget.'
"In the aftermath of last Monday’s protest against Israeli President #IsaacHerzog’s visit in #Sydney, shaky, chaotic videos began to emerge online. A man lies on tram tracks, restrained by officers who punch him 18 times. #Protesters are pushed, they struggle to their feet, crowds stumble around them. Men bowed in prayer are wrenched from their worship by police. A grandmother is in hospital with a spinal injury. She says she feared being suffocated in a stampede as she lay on the ground in agony. She alleges she was pushed over by police."

However, prosecutors argued that White’s use of a Taser was excessive, given Nowland’s age and frail physical state, and how slowly she was moving. They also argued that White’s statement of “bugger it” before deploying the Taser — a term used to express annoyance or frustration — indicated White was “impatient” rather than fearing imminent violence.

#UNH drops charges against 7 out of 12 people arrested during #ProPalestine #protests
By Jeremy Margolis, Concord Monitor
Published August 1, 2024"A University of New Hampshire prosecutor this week dropped criminal charges against seven of the people arrested during a May 1 pro-#Palestine protest after they reportedly accepted plea agreements.
"The seven cases were dismissed nearly three months after UNH police charged 12 people with disorderly conduct and trespassing, nine of whom were set to be arraigned in Dover District Court on Wednesday.
"The agreements involved 30 hours of community service and a period under which the arrestees must remain in 'good public standing', according to Adeena Ahsan, a UNH graduate student who was not arrested but had been in communication with those offered plea deals.
"UNH prosecutor #FrankWeeks [who is also a police captain] declined to comment on the nature of the plea deals.
"Of the other five people arrested, charges had already been dropped against a 'counter-protester' after a friend of his emailed then-President of UNH James Dean that he had been 'mistaken for a protester,' according to a report from the Boston Globe.
"Cases remain pending against the other four, including against two students who are also facing assault charges. One of them, 21-year-old rising UNH senior #AidanTurner, has said he was mistakenly identified and then violently #arrested by Weeks, the UNH prosecutor who is also a police captain. His case is currently set to go to trial on Sept. 10.
"The other, 29-year-old graduate student #SebastianRowan, has been charged with two counts each of assault on a police officer and #ResistingArrest. His case is currently before a grand jury with an indictment decision expected by Aug. 21, according to court records.
"The other two people – 21-year-old #JasonPerra and 19-year-old #LoganONeill – have trials scheduled for October 2 and 9, respectively. Both have been charged with criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct. It was not immediately clear whether they had been offered a plea deal or not."
