Like many #Episcopalians I was thrilled when Dame Sarah Mullally became the first female #archbishopofcanterbury I watched, with considerable interest, when she visited the Vatican and #PopeLeo knowing that their meeting was a diplomatic and theological threading of a needle for the leader of the #CatholicChurch even after the Pope’s historic meeting with #KingCharlesIII Now I am reading about U.S. Secretary of State #MarcoRubio ‘s trip to Rome and the contrast in welcome is sharp. Learn how and why in THE POPE DIDN’T PRAY WITH HIM https://notd.io/notes/6239800789827584_1_1778243689574/the%20pope%20didn%E2%80%99t%20pray%20with%20him:%20reading%20the%20shape%20of%20vatican%20welcome

Today (3 November) the church remembers Richard Hooker, a 16th century priest & an influential theologian of the (first) Elizabethan age. Hooker’s magnus opus, The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity, included in Book Five, a massive defense of the #BCP against Puritan detractors (which we might do well to revisit today). Where Hooker has, perhaps, lost the #EpiscopalChurch lies with his view that the Church & the State were inseparable aspects of a single commonwealth. Despite this his perspective on the Eucharist reflects that of many modern #Episcopalians “Let it therefore be sufficient for me presenting myself at the Lord’s table to know what there I receive from him, without searching or inquiring of the manner how Christ performeth his promise, […] what these elements are in themselves it skilleth not, it is enough that to me which take them they are the body & blood of Christ.”

#MayoPete has not fooled me for a moment into thinking he's #Progressive but he talks a great game & represents #Episcopalians in a mostly good light. I put him in the same folder as #GavinNewsom : #BloombergDems

Several parishes in my area are coming together for a #Pride in the Park #Pentecost Potluck this Sunday, June 8. We’ll begin by celebrating a #Eucharist together at 4:30 then enjoy a potluck meal (attendees are asked to bring a side or desert to share) and some social time.
I’m looking forward to getting to know some of my fellow #DioNeb #Episcopalians and hope that this will be the first of many joint events. We could all use more face to face community opportunities not to mention letting our light shine in public spaces where folks might not otherwise realize the #EpiscopalChurch is. All are welcome!

Aaron Parnas Perspective 5/13/2025
“The Episcopal Church’s migration agency is rejecting a federal directive to assist in resettling white South African refugees, citing its commitment to racial justice and reconciliation. Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe said the church will end its longtime partnership with the government rather than comply, just as a group of 59 South Africans arrived in the U.S. on a chartered flight.”

Nunc dimittis means “now you are dismissing” in Latin & is often used in referring to today’s scripture reading: Luke 2:27-32 in #TheDisciplesWay Along with the reflection by Rev. Tyler Richards it calls readers to consider how faith & religious tradition are communicated & shared through generations. It is important to share our faith with others, however, it is not something many of us, especially #Episcopalians are comfortable doing. This week, #HolyWeek will see an influx of people into our churches, some of whom we only see this week, at Christmas, & maybe a wedding, baptism, or funeral. We celebrate their presence. What we don’t seem to do is really give them any reason to remain among us. This week is the heavy lifting of #Christianity culminating in Jesus’ resurrection on #Easter. And yet, I can’t help comparing regular church-goers to the disciples who fall asleep while Jesus struggles with his fate in the garden. We are not dismissed but called to share the wait with others.

The #SacredGround groups at my church have started a book club rather appropriately called #RBG which, in our case, stands for #ReconciliationBookGroup (as well as honoring the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg). In April we are #reading the #FalseWhiteGospel by #JimWallis which is a troubling chronicle of American #Christianity as well as a (wake up) call to action for many Midwestern #Episcopalians who still don’t understand the threat #ChristianNationalism poses to our faith, our communities, & our #Democracy If you are a person of faith or just someone who wants to understand what’s at stake & why the #theocracy model of the current regime is a bad idea for everyone, please read this book. https://bookshop.org/a/13969/9781250291899 (yes, this is an affiliate link, by using it you help support #IndependentBookStores & my reading habit. Thanks in advance!)

@knittingknots2 I am so tired of the media perpetuating the myth that: "It's not surprising," Penny Edgell, professor in the sociology department at the University of Minnesota, tells Axios.
"If you're more progressive, you might look at religion and say that the mainstream religious institutions don't reflect my values," particularly when it comes to topics like LGBTQ+ inclusion, she says.” Perpetuating this false narrative is doing as much damage to inclusive mainstream denominations striving to live the Way of Jesus as the white-Christian nationalist churches are. Maybe more, since it’s often left leaning, liberal, progressive media with significant LGBTQ+ & minority audiences that are pushing it. Let me be clear: the #EpiscopalChurch welcomes everyone. #BishopBudde in her marvelous homily the day after the inauguration did indeed speak the beliefs & values & actions of #Episcopalians across the nation. I encourage everyone to visit us & see for themselves. #christian

Huh, this seems to resonate with something we #Episcopalians express pretty regularly and is a key part of our identity as #Baptized people: to respect the #dignity of every human person. So the challenge is in how we work to cultivate that dignity.
