I’m reading America’s Original Sin by #JimWallis for my church’s Reconciliation Book Group (#RBG ) and one sentence just jumped out at me: “Losing cultural battles was often the reason that the losers became slaves and the winners became masters.” (p. 75)
I’ve never quite understood why we can’t just let people live so long as they are not breaking our mutually agreed upon laws. Why are the “culture wars” so important to some people on the Right….and Left? Why are they “wars” at all? Why can’t immigrants maintain and celebrate traditions from the culture they were born into as well as celebrating and creating new traditions with the culture they have chosen? Why can’t the common culture of a community expand and grow to share new traditions and ideas built upon multiple cultural foundations?
It never really made sense to me.
Now, thanks to that sentence, it does. And my question becomes: How do I help others see past their fears to understand multiculturalism is not enslavement?

The #SacredGround groups at my church have started a book club rather appropriately called #RBG which, in our case, stands for #ReconciliationBookGroup (as well as honoring the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg). In April we are #reading the #FalseWhiteGospel by #JimWallis which is a troubling chronicle of American #Christianity as well as a (wake up) call to action for many Midwestern #Episcopalians who still don’t understand the threat #ChristianNationalism poses to our faith, our communities, & our #Democracy If you are a person of faith or just someone who wants to understand what’s at stake & why the #theocracy model of the current regime is a bad idea for everyone, please read this book. https://bookshop.org/a/13969/9781250291899 (yes, this is an affiliate link, by using it you help support #IndependentBookStores & my reading habit. Thanks in advance!)
