  6. I hadn't read #TheSpectator for years. Now i remember why.

I thought #MelanieMcDonagh might offer some insight into the character, conduct, or beliefs of #SarahMullaly, the new #ArchbishopOfCanterbury. But no.

McDonagh's first objection is that Mullaly is an Anglican, which displeases the Roman Catholic McDonagh. Not exactly news.

Secondly, Mullaly is a woman. Some women wear lipstick, which McDongh says is incompatible with holiness.

    The rest is pretentious snark.

  7. Breaking 'stained glass ceiling'! Sarah Mullally has been officially installed as the first-ever female Archbishop of Canterbury. From her days as a cancer nurse to leading 100 million Anglicans worldwide, her journey is nothing short of extraordinary. The stained glass ceiling has officially been smashed! english.mathrubhumi.com/news/w #SarahMullally #ArchbishopOfCanterbury #ChurchOfEngland

  8. #GAFCON (conservative, orthodox #Anglicans) has said that it will no longer recognise the authority of the #ArchbishopOfCanterbury.

The statement published on Thursday came almost 2 weeks after Rt Rev Dame Sarah Mullally was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury-designate, becoming the first ever #female to hold the role.

Earlier this year, the Church in Wales also elected Most Rev Cherry Vann, who is in a #samesex #relationship, as Archbishop of Wales.

  9. "As the far right co-opts the symbols of Christianity to promote hostility and intimidation towards perceived outsiders and minorities, Britain’s faith movements have a duty to be standard-bearers for an ethos of tolerance, generosity and inclusion. In that context, the historic nomination of Dame Sarah Mullally as the first female archbishop of Canterbury should be seen as a landmark moment."

  10. "In a world with so many problems, so much hatred, misogyny and racism, it would be good for the Church of England to have an authentic voice at its top that calls out the systems of male privilege that drive violence and abuse against women and addresses the institutional misogyny that is currently being ignored. Hopefully, the appointment of our first female archbishop of Canterbury will be a big step towards this."

  11. "Significant and powerful factions of the Church of England and Anglican communion resist [blessing same-sex unions, which she supports]. Gafcon (the Global Anglican Future Conference), a network of conservative churches, has already announced that it receives the news of Bishop Sarah’s appointment 'with sorrow'."

  12. "and one bishop (the bishop of Ebbsfleet) who does not believe women should be in authority over men in the church. Furthermore, there are still nearly 600 churches, according to Women and the Church, that continue to limit women, where she might not be able to preside over the bread and wine or preach."

  13. "As archbishop of Canterbury, Bishop Sarah will preside over a church that is open to women being priests and bishops but, at the same time, has seven serving bishops who welcome her as their new archbishop but would not personally receive communion from her (the bishops of Blackburn, Chichester, Beverley, Fulham, Oswestry, Richborough and Lewes);"

  14. "in February of this year at General Synod, the church’s national assembly, she broke down in tears as she brought to mind the many 'micro-aggressions' she has been subjected to. I would hazard a guess that some of those incidents were not micro at all."

  15. Martine Osborne notes all that Sarah Mulla;ly is up against as the first female archbishop of Canterbury:

"One in five churches in London have passed resolutions to limit women from being vicars or from consecrating the bread and wine. She has been on the receiving end of misogynistic behaviour:"

But right now I have to celebrate, on this Eve of St Francis, the new #ArchbishopOfCanterbury

  17. Since I’ve seen media outlets give conflicting datings of the #ArchbishopofCanterbury (either 1400 years or 500), here’s a helpful guide:

The See (that is, archbishopric) of Canterbury was established around 1400 years ago when Pope Gregory the Great sent Saint Augustine to evangelize the “Angles” (in some ways reinvigorating a former mission).

The Church *in* England became the Church *of* England around 500 years ago, when Henry VIII broke with Rome.

  23. I’ve heard a rumor that the nominee for the next #ArchbishopOfCanterbury will be announced today. Seems like a good time to pray for the unity of the Church:

Oh God, Creator of our Redeemer Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace: Give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions; take away all hatred & prejudice, & whatever else may hinder us from godly union & concord; that, as there is but one Body & one Spirit, one hope of our calling, one Redeemer, one Faith, one Baptism, one God & Creator of us all, so we all may be of one heart & of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth & peace, of faith & charity, & may with one mind & one mouth glorify You; through Jesus Christ. Amen.

(From the #Episcopal #BCP edited by me for inclusive language.)

Almighty God, we thank you for the hard & honest efforts of the nominating committee & ask your blessings on them, their chosen candidate, & all the people of the Anglican Communion. Amen.

  24. “'I believe in God, but I don’t particularly believe in the Church of England, and I certainly don’t believe in the current crop of bishops,' said one synod member. 'We need someone with moral courage, and I have no confidence that’s what we’ll get.'”

  25. #OTD in 1381: The beginning of the Peasants' Revolt in England.

Wat Tyler and Jack straw led their band of rebels against King Richard II. It would ultimately end with the beheading of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Simon Sudbury and the death of most of the rebels.

  26. CW: King Henry II kills 2/5

Tom moved fast and broke things. Worked very well centralising power to Henry II by razing castles and raising armies. Disempowered the Church. And become a friend of the king.

Henry II wanted more power over the church and promoted his man Tom to the top of the country's church-positions, the #ArchbishopOfCanterbury in 1162.

Upon getting that powerful position Tom flipped and went full-on "Power To The Church".

Well, a bit of a turn-up for the books. Maybe a bit frosty now between ABofC and chief rabbi? (Unless I'm mistaken in thinking that he's still fairly uncritical of Israel?)

Perhaps now, ABofC is in a position to apologise to one Jeremy Corbyn about promoting the lies against the latter. Arguably at that time ABofC abetted the post brexit shambles by leaning into falsehoods about the main opposition party.
